ABOUT
IIITDM, Jabalpur

With the dawn of industrialization and technological revolution, the world is incessantly heading towards a better
and smarter future. The modern industry calls out for a huge demand of inter-disciplinary knowledge and skills.

The current engineering education system in India, though huge and diverse, is mainly based on the conventional
idea of pipeline model. To integrate the knowledge of a given discipline with IT enabled design, prototyping as well as
manufacturing considerations, a need therefore exists for developing new academic programs.

Apart from laying an emphasis on IT, the new approach should also give emphasis on aesthetic, ergonomic and
functional considerations of products. The academic programme should also be able to respond to industry driven
adaptive management structure. With above requirements in mind, the Ministry of Human Resource Development
(MHRD), Government of India, felt the need to set up an Institute of National Importance devoted exclusively to
Information Technology (IT), Design and Manufacturing (D and M). It was envisaged that such an academic Institute
would promote excellence in the desired areas of specialization and would facilitate and promote the competitive
advantage of Indian products and manufacturing in global markets.

Further, the new Institute would serve as an inter-disciplinary institution for education and research by keeping the
concept of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) in mind. The Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and
Manufacturing Jabalpur (IIITDMJ), an Institute of National importance was thus established in January 2005. Strong
industry interface and close-cooperation with other academic and research institutions are the key features of this
Institute.

4
COLLABORATION

The IIITDM Jabalpur Japan collaboration is an aspect of a wider partnership envisaged between Japan and India.
The Institute is being developed and nurtured under India-Japan partnership as a unique Institute of its kind with
focus on IT enabled design and manufacturing.
Under a joint agreement between the two Governments, Japan, a leader in cutting edge manufacturing
technologies is committed to provide support for development of the teaching and research program and also to
promote the infrastructure of the Institute.
During July 2009 at the 3rd Consortium meeting it was decided that Japanese universities and industries will play a
more active role in the postgraduate and research education of the Institute, including joint supervision of thesis,
organizing of joint workshops and conferences at IIITDM Jabalpur. For effective implementation of this
collaboration, Government of Japan has formed a consortium of six universities and six industries :
Among Universities : Among Industries :
1. University of Tokyo 1. Hitachi
2. Tokyo Institute of Technology 2. Toshiba
3. Tohoku University 3. Amada
4. Kyushu University 4. Okuma
5. Shibaura Institute of Technology 5. Sumitomo Metals
6. Kanagawa Institute of Technology 6. GE Energy
MOU
An MOU with Kanagawa Institute of Technology, Japan and PDPM-Indian Institute of Information Technology,
Design & Manufacturing Jabalpur was signed for promoting academic friendship and co-operation between the
two institutions.

5
JENESYS 2.0

JENESYS, Japan - East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths, is a project advanced by the Japanese
government from the standpoint of providing a sound foundation for strong solidarity within Asia through large-
scale youth exchange. At the Second East Asia Summit (EAS), which was held in January 2007, Mr. Shinzo Abe, Prime
Minister of Japan, announced a plan to implement a 35-billion-yen youth exchange program, inviting about 6,000
young people to Japan mainly from the EAS member states (ASEAN, Australia, China, India, New Zealand, the ROK)
every year for five years, with a view to establish a basis of Asia's stalwart solidarity by expanding youth exchange.

The JENESYS 2.0 project, is a succeeding version of the JENESY project and expects to invite over 30,000 youths from
countries/regions of Asia, Pacific Islands and North America. JOCA is the implementing body for the youths of the
following countries/regions:

14 Pacific Island countries/regions: a total of 7 groups with 368 participants

10 ASEAN countries, Australia, India, New Zealand, and Timor-Lest: 1,743 participants

14 Students from PDPM IIITDM Jabalpur were selected to participate in the JENESYS 2.0 held atTokyo, Fokuoka, Saga,
Tako.

6
ACADEMICS

Project Based Internship

The Institute recognizes that not all aspects of learning can be taught in the conventional way of classroom (or
laboratory) teaching methodology.

Realizing this as an important element of learning in an organization, the Institute has opened an academic
program of approximately six months long Project-Based Internship (PBI) opportunity to its students to be
executed after the completion of sixth semester.

This is the strongest point of our curriculum because it provides on-the-job experience or exposure to ongoing R&D
in an organization under the supervision of able practitioners/researchers.

Two semester long, Design and Fabrication Project (UG 3rd year)
The course, Design & Fabrication Project are meant to nurture creativity, innovation and ideas. In this course, the
students have to properly fabricate the product whose design was developed and proposed in the first semester of
the course so that it has the proper finishing, packaging and is ready to be launched into the market.

Fabrication Project primarily include selection of materials and manufacturing processes along with prototype
building and testing with the end output as fully functional product. The course expects to observe the step by step
detailed plan of execution, such as, purchase of material, fabrication, testing, finishing, display, etc.
