Brief With nationwide distribution, James Latham offers the most

The caf is set within an old warehouse at the Royal Arsenal
Riverside in Woolwich east London. The industrial building was
formerly part of a munitions factory producing weapons for the
royal navy and armed forces. The brief was to create a destination
cafe for the Arsenal Riverside development whilst respecting the
listed buildings heritage. The building was to be stripped back to a
shell retaining its original material character.

Challenges

The project was completed on a limited budget and had the

constraints of the building being listed.

Results

The scheme leaves the original features intact and the design is
an insertion of new elements to contrast with the existing fabric of
the building. The buildings heritage is reflected in the use of the
chevron pattern which draws its inspiration from the insignia on
military uniforms. Bespoke tables in solid oak have the chevron
pattern screen printed directly on the surface.

Brief

The brief was to turn this 370 square metre arch space into a
venue that allowed visitors to enjoy Felix Topolskis artworks.
This was to incorporate a counter bar and seating for Company
of Cooks food offer whilst creating an aesthetic that reflected
Topolskis utilitarian artistic approach.

Challenges

The main challenge was designing a method of displaying the

huge artworks in a way that would honour the artist and his
utilitarian approach. Choosing furniture and materials were also
carefully done to represent the functional character of the bar.

Results

With self-supporting scaffolding structure within the arches to

hold and display Topolskis artwork, this new industrial, raw style-
looking gallery truly celebrates Felix Topolskis work. The bar top
itself is made from reclaimed school desks whose surfaces are
covered in graffiti. The back of the arch celebrates the Topolski
Chronicles; hand sketched accounts of iconic figures, politics and
events throughout the 20th Century.

Brief
We were tasked to create a destination restaurant, bar and coffee
take away within 3 Victorian railway arches under the old North
London railway line next to Hoxton Overground station. We built
a palette around details and references from the railway carriages
and locomotives that used to run on the old North London
Railway line.
Challenges
Being situated in Victorian railway arches, there were a number
of challenges to overcome. The first issue was concealing the
air conditioning as we did not want to go down the typical route

of having exposed air conditioning ducts. We achieved this by Shortlisted
running all of the air conditioning underground. We also faced a

A space inspired by the Victorian railway carriages from the old
North London Railway line that used to run overhead, mixing this
with industrial fittings and finishes to complement the industrial
vernacular and history of the arches. We built a palette of paired
back aged finishes such as blackened steel ceiling strap work to
create a graphic contrast to the brickwork, which we hung steam
punk inspired light fittings from.

Brief

To redesign the existing ground floor restaurant and bar area,

retaining lunch and dinner custom and increasing all-day trading.
The basement area was underutilised, so the design needed
to increase footfall and capacity by creating an attractive,
defined offer.

Challenges

The ground floor bar and restaurant areas were slightly below
street level and landlocked between a church and tall office
buildings. Although there were many windows, it felt dark and
soulless. There was no visual connection between the ground
floor and basement room, and a network of bland corridors and

Results

The back fitting was opened up and dining counter added to

create a connected dining experience at the bar. Raised areas
with fixed seating and booths at the perimeter windows give
customers an exterior link. The basement stair was reconfigured
and set in a glass enclosure to give a direct view into the
basement from the ground floor. The new ground floor restaurant
provides day-round eating. The basement trades as a cocktail bar
and lounge.

Brief

The brief was to re-develop the existing Ping Pong brand and
deliver a new experience for customers. Working alongside the
new branding re-vamp that had recently been completed prior to
us coming on board.

Challenges

All of the loose furniture including table and chairs are all bespoke
designs within the restaurant. Our biggest challenge was
developing the new family of furniture chair, dim sum stool, bar
stool, and tables with our manufactures in China and streamlining
the prototypes before launching.

Results

The design references the intriguing and traditional side of old

China and the juxtaposition between the two. Focusing on the
urban side of Shanghai chic, through both modern and 1930s
interpretation. The new concept has a distinctly different feel to
its sister restaurants from the more elegant bespoke furniture and
bar stools to custom-made artwork, lighting and metal panelling.

Brief
Our brief was to restore the pub back to its Victorian glory.
Housed in the former Buffet Rooms, it has beautiful period
features including a large double height vaulted ceiling. One of our
objectives was to re-introduce a grander feel and renovate the old
part of the pub that was linked to the existing station building by a
wrought iron, domed arcade which was glazed on all sides.
Challenges
The buildings are listed examples of Victorian railway architecture.
A number of period features had been obscured or ignored and
needed reinvigoration. The pub was linked to the station building
by a glazed wrought iron, domed arcade. This place was unloved
and the terrace was outdated with concrete paving. The challenge
was to re-introduce a grander, Victorian feel whilst producing a
focal point for local and tourist trade throughout the day.
Results
The renovation brought back to life a number of beautiful period
features including the large double height vaulted ceiling in the bar
and Victorian grandeur in the shape of a main bar complete with
metal columns and station clock. The original glazed, wrought iron
domed arcade has been transformed into a caf with a distinct
atmosphere and charm. A nursery style terrace with feature rose

Brief

The renovation brought back to life a number of beautiful period

features including the large double height vaulted ceiling in the bar
and Victorian grandeur in the shape of a main bar complete with
metal columns and station clock. The original glazed, wrought iron
domed arcade has been transformed into a caf with a distinct
atmosphere and charm. A nursery style terrace with feature rose
arches and vintage seating has a cosmopolitan appeal.

Challenges

Designing for a Grade II listed building, all insertions are non-

structural and non-intrusive linings, installed with careful detailing
to respect and accentuate the existing building fabric. The
challenge was to create an overarching design language for
three distinct areas Martini Bar, Dining Room and Club Room
whilst accentuating the exceptional character of the building and
celebrating its glamorous and decadent history.

Results

The Martini Bars ornate focal point is a gold-mirrored, brass-clad

bar with a faceted, smoked gold mirror backdrop cut with the
repeat abstracted motif of a Martini glass. A dynamic installation
of suspended sculptural lights animates the double-height space.
Seating options include a 6.6 metre onyx sharing table, as well as
upholstered banquettes tucked under a canopy of sumptuous teal
buttoned velvet, for a more intimate experience.

Brief

To create a space dedicated to the celebration and enjoyment of

exquisite food. It was important that the restaurant be flexible and
able to work with the addition of a private dining room to the main
dining area or as one singular restaurant. It needed to dovetail
with existing architecture but also to act as an oasis in the centre
of the hotel and provide a stage where the food can perform.

Challenges

To create a space with a strong functional flow that supports and

enhances the consumption of exquisite food. To make sure that
the diner can see, smell and taste the food without distraction
whilst the front of house effortless operates the space around
them. Ultimately it is to create a strong identity for the restaurant
and a memorable experience for the diners.

Results

A wave-like ceiling, created from seven thousand delicate glass

receptacles filled with vibrantly coloured spices, form a warm
glittering canopy. Mirrors along one wall are engraved with
illustrations of the spices hanging above. Large perforated doors
partially screen the restaurant from the entrance while an angled
oak floor invites diners inside. Lacquered walls create a calm
interior where the food shines.

Brief

The Magazine, a grade II* listed building in Kensington Gardens

built around 1805 was originally designed as a Gunpowder
Store, hence the name, Magazine. The architectural vision for
the building was for a lightweight contemporary extension, to
be sensitively positioned adjacent to the historic structure. The
intention was that the extension should have the feel of a pavilion
rather than a more substantial form.

Challenges

The new Magazine extension needed to contain a generous, open

social space that should enliven the Serpentine Sackler Gallery as
a new cultural and culinary destination. The new extension had to
be designed to complement the calm and solid classical building
with a light, transparent, dynamic and distinctly contemporary
space of the 21st century.

Results

The new addition of the 19th century gunpowder store in Hyde

Park is one of the most inspiringly beautiful dining rooms in
London, in Europe, in the world. Its like eating inside some great
mythical animals exoskeleton just breath-taking and definitely
the place to bring someone who has no conversation. You can

Brief

Charlie Gilkes and Duncan Stirling of Inception Group came to Building Construction Solutions
d-raw with the brief of turning the existing Brutons Bar into the
living room of the fictional character of Phileas Fogg, the main
character in the 1873 Jules Verne novel Around the world in
eighty days.

Challenges

The challenge of this project was to produce a convincing

environment depicting the life of Phileas Fogg in his home without
making it look too set design. The customer is encouraged
to stay and experience the same delight and enthusiasm for
travelling as Jules Vernes novel did for generations.

Results

D-raw cooked a late 19th century interior by stripping back the

existing bar into a large room, increasing the ceiling height and
dressing the existing walls and columns with Victorian panelling
and a large library wall. A central fireplace, a bar, a Victorian
cornice, ceiling rose and a herringbone floor where installed.
All the space was rewired to provide power to traditional lighting
in order to recreate the grand living room of the period.

Brief
Creative Director, Fiona Gale, approached Blacksheep with her
vision for a restaurant offering free-range chicken dishes, hence a
brand new restaurant was born. Situated in the heart of Londons
buzzing Carnaby Street, one of the key design directions was to
hint towards an industrial and reclaimed style but softened around
the edges with a feminine and comfortable touch.
Challenges
The menu focuses on taking an everyday ingredient like chicken
and transforming it into something amazing. As the concept
developed, the brand DNA of human alchemy evolved meaning

that the raw materials used would have a human touch making Shortlisted

Smaller room settings sit within the larger space, divided by
shelving & storage, comprised of everyday materials given a new
use. A marble chefs table extends from the kitchen into the dining
space, whilst a large polished concrete bar top forms the 7th step
of the staircase, leading customers to the dining space. The use
of raw industrial materials throughout contrasts with the softness
of upholstered items reinforcing the play between hard and soft.

Brief

We designed a bar named Flower around the theme of a flower.

Origami which is a unique Japanese art changes its forms into
various things from a single sheet of paper. Taking inspiration from www.halo.co.uk
this, we used a single finite material aluminium as a simple planar
surface from which we created an engaging three-dimensional
space that fulfils various functions and requirements.

Challenges

A sheet of aluminium, a recyclable material as thin and flexible as

paper, spreads across the ceiling as it fills the space with its light
and airy presence. Changes to the size and density of the flower
petals impart the function and atmosphere suited to each area,
such as lively and quiet areas created through minute differences
in the height and expanse of a given space.

Results

Ones position and angle of vision as well as the reflection

of images and lights from the mirrors on the walls concur to
perpetually redefine the appearance of the whole space, thus
enabling the viewer to experience a space with transient and
diverse atmospheres. The layering of minutely differing areas
throughout the space gives people the opportunity to find an
oasis of comfort at their own leisure.

Brief A commitment to design excellence has put Design Centre,

Chelsea Harbour firmly on the map. Nowhere else will you find
BrewDog, Scotlands largest independent brewery have opened such a concentrated collective. It is a thriving platform, both
12 bars in the last 3 years, selling its award winning craft beers. creatively and commercially, for an exceptionally dynamic industry.
Sao Paulo, Brazil represents the first bar in the Americas and is
part of an ambitious global expansion plan for the company which
is again the UKs fastest growing food and drink company with www.dcch.co.uk
annual average growth of 167%.

Challenges

The building was a former garage and mechanics workshop. Its

industrial features were perfect for the BrewDog concept. The
staircase section of the building was stripped of its cladding to
reveal a raw concrete tower. The remainder of the facade has
untreated steel sheets riveted to steel channels. Sliding / folding
doors create a wide welcoming entrance. The front outside area
features walls made from raw timber shuttered concrete.

Results

The outside represents BrewDogs revolutionary pub brand ethos,

and compliments their edgy punk reputation. It is like nothing else
around Sao Paulo, and leads the rebellion against big budget
contemporary design bars, which are often bland and over-styled.
The Shipping container serves as a bottle take away shop. The
clean, industrial and unpretentious design is a refreshing change
from the over-styled and unrewarding venues.

Brief Over 20 years at the forefront of innovative bespoke bar design

Created for the Sleep hotel design exhibition, London November
2013, we were requested to come up with an intriguing concept
for this 2-day event. The captive audience for this show were hotel
owners, operators and designers that have seen it all. The Bar is
located in an elongated corridor space which is to became the
centre of attention providing the guests an alternative environment
to network and socialise.

Challenges

As far as we know this is the first ceramic bar of its kind. This fully
operation bar weighs 1.8 tons. The wall sculpture spans for over
12 meters, made of 1854 pressed aluminium triangles, weighs
only 200 kg. The bar designed with Laufen products with a
changeable top which enables them to replace the top trays with
new products. The ceramic bar top acts as a fantastic insulating
material and does not transfer the cold temperature from the
ice trays.

Results

The all-white installation is a simple play between defined

geometrical forms and abstract structures. A series of aluminium
triangular wall sculptures grow from the floor and surround
the lounge. In contrast to this organic shape, the geometrical
minimalistic V shaped bar is constructed from 64 ceramic shelves
and sinks. A simple shape made of this majestic material has
concealed lights on each shelve which gives it a linear and
floating look.

Brief

The brief was for a flagship venue for the Industry Beans coffee
label within a 200 square metre factory shell. The venue required
a caf dining area, commercial kitchen, external covered seating,
administration and also commercial roasting facilities including
cupping and coffee bean storage areas.

Challenges

The main challenge for us was how to transform a vast industrial

shell into an inviting and comfortable space on a limited budget.
Located on a backstreet in a semi-industrial neighbourhood it was
also important that there was a streetscape presence that could
attract the attention of passing clientele. The proposal needed
to have an inventive and resourceful nature to reflect the clients
creative approach to food and coffee.

Results

Stacking the staff and admin areas above the kitchen and
service counter, we essentially created a building within a
building. Internally, the double height pallet faade gives the
sense of entering an intimate laneway space - something that
is quintessentially Melbourne. Both internal faade and front
polycarbonate faade feature pivoting and flipping panels to
create a playful habitation while naturally ventilating the
warehouse space.

Challenges

It is more an evolving installation than a decor. Every detail

recounts the story of an imaginary heroine, Miss Ko. Like an
alley, stretched across 500m of space, leading to the spectacle
of a frenzied, frenetic kitchen, where the eye glimpses enigmatic

Miss Ko intrigues and challenges the mind.

Brief

To realise the clients vision for a theatrical and dynamic lighting

scheme for this fine dining panoramic restaurant on Level 33
of The Shard. All elements of the lighting scheme needed to
be carefully controlled to ensure a dramatic and intimate feel to
the venue was maintained whilst minimising reflections in the
perimeter glass to ensure uninhibited views for diners.

Challenges

The lighting was to evolve throughout the day and night to

enhance the function of each space whilst keeping glare and
reflections in the vast amount of perimeter glass to a minimum.
With so much perimeter glass we could not clearly calculate the
amount of glare and inter reflection of light so we carried out
extensive night-time mock ups on site so we could evaluate any
reflections with the interior designer and client.

Results

The client feels we have achieved a very theatrical low glare

lighting scheme which provides minimal reflections in the glass
perimeter meaning diners can enjoy the breathtaking views across
London. The lighting design retains the element of theatre even at
lunchtime when the restaurant is flooded with natural light through
the perimeter glazing.

Challenges

We designed this space with a new space concept Boutique

Gallery, which fundamentally functioned as brand space for
Lexus, not an ordinary showroom. We tried to make a space
where itself can communicates the brand philosophy and creates
a certain mood combined with cafe and restaurant area, even if
there is no car exhibited. That was a big challenge and goal upon
designing this space.

Results

Incorporating various aspects of the Lexus brand into this space,

such as Hi-tech, sophisticated, relaxed or exciting, we believe we
were able to reflect their brand into this Intersect. Inspired by the
ethos of Lexuss craftsmanship, we take the essence into many
details and express the quality of the brand to create the space to
communicate the life with Lexus.

guests but also people walking by, to lead them in. As a result,
its evaluated as one of the most popular bar in Guangzhou.

Brief

Tsukimichi is located on the top of a building in an area in

Fukuoka where established Japanese restaurants gather along a
river. In order to differentiate from existing restaurants, modern
Japan was chosen as the concept for the operation and design
of the restaurant. A modern style of guests entering with their
membership card is used, and modern tastes are applied
throughout, from the cooking to utensils, furnishings and staff
costumes.

Challenges

The design creates a modern Japanese space where nostalgic

and futuristic mingle. Minimal and sharp shapes are used on
materials that invoke nostalgic feeling, while techniques such as
overlaying with classic patterns are used on futuristic elements.
Different aspects appear at each turn in the central pathway.
Symbols representing the moon, the image from the restaurant
name Tsukimichi (moon path), are used throughout the restaurant
as well.

Results

By subliming the concept of modern Japan on both operation

and design, Tsukimichi has created an original and new
hospitality space. It creates a unique atmosphere that can be
described as neo established Japanese, a place that pursues
quality rather than casual. We believe this place has gone
beyond a mere differentiation from surrounding competitors; it is
a fresh wind attracting new customers in a field that is becoming
obsolete.

Challenges

To fill a 1000m empty shell on a modest budget required a

unique approach. The warehouse was used to construct details in
advance whilst obtaining permits. Lighting design uses shadows
and colour to fill voids, and give accents. A palate of simple, often
recycled, low cost materials and basic construction techniques
was used to give a hand crafted feeling of texture, tactility and
warmth.

Results

The concept is a theatrical fantasy world based on an abstract

urban forest. There is no clear delineation between inside and
outside, with sunlight and greenery throughout. Abstract steel
plant forms and natural finishes enhance the expansive, yet
intimate, relaxed garden atmosphere. A rich variety of spaces
unfold within the venue, creating a complex and exciting, fully
immersive 3D environment.

To capture the spirit of Penfolds through the experience of
wine and fine dining a penultimate dining experience to best
showcase Penfolds wines, a space that pays tribute to the iconic
Australian brand, its place and its history. PGMs design concept
builds on the oenological notion of terroir. Combined with the
Penfolds history to create a bespoke dining environment.
Challenges
Re-purposing and reusing as much of the existing fit-out as
possible to fit in with the budget and also to be as sustainable as
possible and not be wasteful. To use much as possible Australian

materials and furniture, PGMD was asked to consult on every
design aspect, not only the interior design but the uniforms,
tableware and graphics.
Results
The design creates a range of spatial experiences for the diner:
pre-dinner drinks in the red bar, where you view and select rare
vintages from the purpose designed Heritage cabinet; in the
restaurant clientele watch sommeliers decanting the wines at
bespoke wine stations; mirrors and diaphanous materials open
and soften the space. The cellar below is another space to
experience the wine.

Brief

Marc Haeberlins brasserie occupies the former Royal Stables, a

building classified as an historic monument both inside and out.
It boasts 800m of exceptional interior space, 13.5m high and
crowned with an unusually beautiful original timber roof structure.

Challenges

Working within the restrictions of the site, the project concentrates

specifically on conserving existing details. Jouin Manku wanted to
expose the fabric of the building, to show off the timber frame and
joists, to retain the original render upstairs, reuse the floor tiles and
play around with the grand doors to create an entrance lobby. As
a direct response to the monumentality of the site, Jouin Mankus
design plays with a sense of scale and light.

Results

It is important for the visitor to be able to take stock of the

exceptional historic dimension of the site without feeling dwarfed
by it. They have employed a series of creative and spectacular
devices to help define areas within the building. Conversely,
the palette of raw and natural materials is deliberately limited:
blackened raw steel, patinated zinc, unfinished oak, and full hide
leather are the four materials used in the restaurant.

Brief

Topolopompo is a fire kitchen restaurant inspired by the exotic

culinary traditions of the East. Its fire is omnipresent not only in
every single dish but also physically as a prominent and active
participant in space. Topolopompo alludes to a tribal bonfire
seating of old where tales and myths crystallized into indigenous
cultural heritage.

Challenges

The design challenge was mainly to express its character inspired

by the landscapes of the East; landscapes of fertile valleys, rice
terraces and mountain tops, celebrating this morphology and
introducing abundant possibilities for social gatherings along the
route from the valley to the mountain top.

Results

These social landscapes are dominated by a mythical Fire

Dragon, the spirit behind Topolopompo. While it hovers all
around the space veiling with its translucent golden tail the
different landscapes, its movement brings about a rich sense
of layering, mystery and ever changing presence of a primordial
experience. Topolopompo is made of Bamboo wood and Lava
stone, both incarnate the eternal presence and importance of
nature in our life.

Brief
Trst is a craft beer bar that also houses Luksus: a small, tasting
menu-only restaurant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. It combines the
clients passion for elevated beer and food; bold, progressive
design and the aesthetic traditions of Denmark.

Challenges
Integrating both the bar and restaurant, two different entities,
into the 1200 square foot space and creating a bar based solely
around a state of the art 21-tap draft system.
Results
Trst is frequently named as one of the best beer bars in New
York and was recently named the best beer bar in New York by
Eater and Time Out New York.

Brief

Restaurateur Jennifer Vitagliano and Chef Matt Lambert

combined to create a modern twist on New Zealands culinary
past and bring the spirit of the cuisine and culture to Manhattans

to create a space which would serve Michelin quality food in a

The main issue was dealing with the late 19th Century property
which had not been in service for decades and caused countless

issues because of it. We wanted to keep the existing character of
the building, however, still creating a space that could flourish both

functionally and aesthetically.

Results

In line with this folksy and organic concept, we used a

combination of raw materials, exposed brick and rich walnut
timber to create a welcoming and elegant interior space.
Mid-century furniture, brass lighting and deep indigo leather
banquettes reinforce and further complement the concept. The
result was a refined juxtaposing interior space that included raw
and rustic design that contrasted successfully against elegant
walnut bespoke pieces.
