PART I: THE MASS OF THE CATECHUMENS

During which the worshiper should prepare for the Mass of the Faithful by praying
the devotions with the Celebrant, and by reflecting on the Scriptures which are
read as part of the liturgy of this day. At a Low Mass the worshipers are directed,
not prescribed (!), to kneel at all times except for the Gospels (when they stand),
the Offertory and the Ablutions (when they sit).

The Priest comes before the Altar to begin the Mass by saying the preparation
with the server, or at the High Mass, with the Deacon and the Subdeacon.

Priest. In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
Priest. I will go unto the Altar of God.
Answer. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.
Psalm 43, (Judica me, Deus)
Priest. Give sentence with me, O God, and defend my cause against the ungodly
people; * O deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.
Answer. For thou art the God of my strength, why hast thou put me from thee:
and why go I so heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me?
Priest. O send out thy light and thy truth, that they may lead me: and bring me
unto thy holy hill, and to thy dwelling.
Answer. And that I may go unto the Altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and
gladness: and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God, my God.
Priest. Why art thou so heavy, O my soul: and why art thou so disquieted within
me?
Answer. O put thy trust in God: for I will yet give him thanks, which is the help of
my countenance, and my God.
Priest. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
Answer. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end.
Amen.
Priest. I will go unto the Altar of God.
Answer. Even unto the God of my joy and gladness.

Verse. Our help is in the Name of the Lord.

Misereatur
Answer. Almighty God have mercy upon thee, forgive thee thy sins, and bring

Verse. Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, O God?
Response. That thy people may rejoice in thee.

Response. And grant us thy salvation.
Verse. O Lord, hear my prayer.
Response. And let my cry come unto thee.
First Salutation:

Here the Our Father may be said. After which follows:

Collect for Purity


ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from no
secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy
Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Here the Decalogue may be said. When the Decalogue is omitted the Summary
of the Law may also be said here. Approaching the Altar the Priest says the
following prayer:
Aufer a nobis
Take away from us our iniquities we beseech thee, O Lord, that we may be worthy
to enter with pure minds into the Holy of holies; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Oramus, te
We beseech thee, O Lord, by the merits of thy Saints if there are relicks in the
Altar the bracketed words are added [whose relicks are here, and of] thy Saints,
that it may please thee to forgive us all our sins. Amen.
Introit or Opening Anthem
Having completed the preparation the Priest now goes the Epistle horn of the
Altar and begins the Mass by reading the Introit which is or has been sung by
the Choir (and the people) during the previous devotions.
Kyrie eleison
LORD, have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us.
Christ have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon
us.
Lord have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us.
Then, if it is to be said, there follows:

Gloria in excelcis
Glory be to God on high. And on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise
thee, we bless thee, (bow head) we worship thee, we glorify thee, (bow head) we
give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father
Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, (bow head) Jesus Christ; O Lord God,
Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have
mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, (bow head) receive
our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon
us. For thou only art holy; thou only, (bow head) O [Jesus] Christ, with the Holy
Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

COLLECT OR COLLECTS OF THE DAY


Each Mass has three special prayers: Collect, Secret, Postcommunion which
always correspond. They are the principal variable prayers.
Second Salutation:
Priest. The Lord be with you.
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
At the conclusion the people respond: Amen.

THE EPISTLE
Then is read the Lesson or Epistle for the day. The people respond: Thanks be to
God.

Gradual
Anciently in between the Lesson and the Gospel is sung a Gradual and the
Alleluia (or on penitential days the Tract instead of the Alleluia).
Private Prayers of the Celebrant before the Gospel
The reading of the Gospel is preceded by appropriate ceremonial and so teaches
the deep reverence with which the Gospel ought to be received.
Munda cor meum
Cleanse my heart and my lips, O Almighty God, who didst purge the lips of the
Prophet Isaiah with a live coal: and of thy gracious mercy, vouchsafe so to purify
me, that I may worthily proclaim thy holy Gospel; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
At High Mass the Deacon asks the Celebrant's blessing to read the Gospel, but
at Low Mass the Celebrant himself asks God for his blessing for this purpose.
Jube, Domine. Dominus sit.
Let thy blessing, O Lord, be upon me. The Lord be in my heart, and on my lips,
that I may worthily and rightly proclaim his Gospel. Amen.

THE GOSPEL
Then is read the Gospel for the day. The Gospel reading is the climax of the Mass
of the Catuchmens. Here Jesus Christ approaches as the word received in the
hearing.
Third Salutation
Priest. The Lord be with you.
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Then the priest announces the Gospel to which the people respond: Glory to
thee, O Lord.
Now follows the reading of the Gospel passage. When the reading has been
concluded the people respond: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Nicene Creed


Here is recited or sung the Nicene Creed. It is a pledge of faithfulness of the
Christian people.
I believe in one God. The Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And of all
things visible and invisible. And in one Lord (bow head) Jesus Christ, the only-
begotten Son of God; Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of
Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the
Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men and our salvation came
down from heaven, (kneel) And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin
Mary, And was made man: (rise) And was crucified also for us under Pontius
Pilate; He suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to
the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the
Father: And he shall come again, with glory, to judge bot the quick and the dead;
Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord and
Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father
and the Son (bow head) together is worshipped and glorified; who spake by the
Prophets: And I believe in one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge
one Baptism for the remission of sins: And I look for the resurrection of the dead:
And the Life of the world to come. Amen.
PART II: THE MASS OF THE FAITHFUL
The Mass is an act of obedience to our Lord who said do this in remembrance of
me. The Mass of the Faithful is that part of the Mass in which the Priest ought to
DO what Jesus DID. We read that He did these four things: 1. He took Bread and
Wine, 2. He gave thanks, 3. He brake the Bread, 4. He gave it to them. Only the
Baptized can participate in this part of the Mass.

The Offertory [sit]


Then shall be said or sung the Offertory sentence appointed, the Priest first
saying,
Fourth Salutation
Priest. The Lord be with you.
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
The Offertory sentence is now sung by the Choir and people. Meanwhile the
Priest shall offer the Bread and Wine upon the Altar and read the appointed
prayers of oblation. Holding and moderately elevating the patten and Host the
priest says,
Suscipe, sancte Pater
Receive, O Holy Father, Almighty and Everlasting God, this spotless Host, which I
thine unworthy servant do offer unto thee, my God, the living and the true, for my
countless sins, offences, and negligences, for all here present, and for all the
faithful in Christ, both quick and dead: that it may be profitable both to me and to
them for salvation unto life eternal. Amen.
Then shall wine first be poured into the Chalice. The Priest then blesses the
water saying (except in Masses of the Dead when it is not said),
Deus,qui humanae substantie
O God, who didst wonderfully create, and yet more wonderfully renew the
dignity and nature of man; grant unto us, that through the mystery of this water
wand Wine, we may be sharers in his divinity who vouchsafed to be made
partaker of our humanity, Jesus Christ, thy Son our Lord, who with thee, in the
unity of the Holy Ghost, liveth and reigneth God, world without end. Amen.
Then while placing the cup on the Altar the priest says,
Offerimus tibi
We offer unto thee, O Lord, the Cup of Salvation; humbly beseeching thy mercy
that it may go up before thy Divine Majesty with a sweet savour for our salvation,
and that of the whole world. Amen.
Then the Priest bows and says,
In spiritu humilitas
In the spirit of humility, and with a contrite heart, let us be accepted by thee, O
Lord; and so let our sacrifice be in thy sight this day, that it may be well pleasing
unto thee, O Lord our God.
Then the Priest, standing upright, shall slightly raise his hands and join them
together saying,
Veni, sanctificator
Come, O Sanctifier, Almighty, Everlasting God, and bless this sacrifice made ready
for thy Holy Name.
Then shall the Priest recite the Lavabo Psalm (26 vs. 6-12) while the server
pours water over the fingers of the Priest. Having completed the Psalm the Priest
shall bow and say,
Suscipe, sancta Trinitas
Receive, O Holy Trinity, this oblation which we offer unto thee, in memory of the
passion, resurrection, and ascension Jesus Christ our Lord; and in honour of
Blessed Mary Ever Virgin, of blessed John the Baptist, of the holy Apostles Peter
and Paul; and of all thy Saints; that it may avail them to their honour and us to our
salvation; and may they whose memory we celebrate on earth vouchsafe to
intercede for us in heaven; Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then shall the Priest turn to the people and say,


Orate, fratres [kneel]
Priest. Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to
God the Father Almighty.
People. May the Lord receive this sacrifice at thy hands, to the praise and
glory of his Name; to our benefit and that of all his holy Church.
Priest. Amen.
The Secrets [kneel]
Then the Priest shall read silently the Secret or Secrets of the Day, and at the
end shall say, World without end; to which the People respond, Amen.

PREFACE TO THE CANON OF THE MASS


Anciently the Canon of the Mass began here.
Fifth Salutation
Sursum corda and Preface [kneel]
Priest. The Lord be with you.
People. And with thy spirit.
Priest. Lift up your hearts.
Answer. We lift them up unto the Lord.
Priest. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
Answer. It is meet and right so to do.
Priest. IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all
times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty,
Everlasting God.

Here shall follow the Proper Preface, according to the time, if there be any
specially appointed; or else immediately shall be said or sung by the Priest,
(see insert)
THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we
laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,
Priest and People.
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, Lord God of hosts, Heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory
be to thee, O Lord Most High. BLESSED is he that cometh in the Name of the
Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
THE CANON OF THE MASS [kneel]
Te igitur
Therefore, most gracious Father, through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, we
humbly pray and beseech thee, that thou accept, and bless, these gifts, these
offerings, these holy and unspotted sacrifices, which, first of all, we offer unto
thee for thy holy Catholic Church: that thou vouchsafe to pacify, keep, unite and
govern it throughout the whole world: with thy servant N. our Pope, and N. our
own Bishop, and all true believers, and such as have the Catholic and Apostolic
faith in due estimation.
Memento, Domine
Remember, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids, N. and N., and all here present
whose faith and devotion unto thee are known and manifest, for whom we offer
unto the: or who themselves offer unto thee this sacrifice of praise, for
themselves, and for all to whom they are bound: for the redemption of their souls,
for the hope of their salvation and safety: and who render their vows unto thee,
the eternal, living and true God.
Communicantes or Infra Actionem
Joining in communion, [in certain seasons an extra phrase is added here] and
venerating the memory, first of the glorious ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of our God
and Lord Jesus Christ as also of thy blessed Apostles and Martyrs, Peter, Paul,
Andrew, James, John, Thomas, James, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Simon and
Thaddeus: Linus, Cletus, Clement, Xystus, Cornelius, Cyprian, Lawrence,
Chrysogonus, John and Paul, Cosmas and Damian: and of all thy Saints; by whose
merits and prayers grant thou that in all things we may be defended with the help
of thy protection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hanc igitur
This oblation, therefore, of our bounden service, as also of all thy family, [in
certain seasons an extra phrase is added here] we beseech thee, O Lord,
graciously to accept: and order our days in thy peace, and bid us to be delivered
from eternal damnation, and to be numbered in the flock of thine elect. Through
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Quam oblationem
Which oblation do thou, O God, we beseech thee, vouchsafe in all things to make
bles sed, appro ved, rati fied, reasonable, and acceptable: that unto us it
may become the Bo dy and Blo od of thy most dearly beloved Son, our Lord
Jesus Christ.
Qui pridie
Who the day before he suffered, took bread into his holy and venerable hands,
and lifting up his eyes to heaven unto thee, O God, his almighty Father, giving
thanks to thee, he blessed, brake, and gave to his disciples, saying: Take and eat,
ye all, of this:
For this is my Body
Simili modo
Likewise after supper, taking also this excellent Chalice into his holy and
venerable hands: and giving thanks to thee, he bles sed, and gave to his
disciples, saying: Take and drink, ye all, of it.
For this is the Chalice of my Blood,
of the new and eternal testament:
the mystery of faith:
which shall be shed for you and
for many, for the remission of sins.
Unde et memores
Wherefore, O Lord, we also thy servants, together with thy holy people, mindful of
the blessed passion of the same Christ thy Son our Lord, as also his resurrection
from hell and glorious ascension into heaven: do offer unto thine excellent
majesty of thine own gifts and bounty, a pure Host, a holy Host, a spotless
Host, the holy Bread of eternal life, and the Chalice of everlasting salvation.

Supra quae propitio


Upon which vouchsafe to look with a favourable and serene countenance: and to
accept them, even as thou didst accept the gifts of thy just servant Abel, and the
sacrifice of our Patriarch Abraham: and the holy sacrifice, the spotless Host, which
thy high priest Melchisedech offered unto thee.
Supplices te rogamus
We humbly beseech thee, almighty God: command thou these to be brought by
the hands of thy holy Angel to thin altar on high, in the presence of thy divine
majesty: that, as many of us as by this partaking of the altar shall receive the
most sacred Body and Blood of thy Son, may be fulfilled with all heavenly
benediction and grace. Through the same Christ our Lord.
Commemoratio pro Defunctis
Remember, O Lord, thy servants and handmaids N. and N. who have gone before
us with the sign of faith, and rest in the sleep of peace. To them, O Lord, and to all
that rest in Christ, we beseech thee to grant a place of refreshing, light, and
peace. Through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Nobis quoque peccatoribus
To us sinners also, thy servants, trusting in the multitude of thy mercies,
vouchsafe to grant some part and fellowship with thy holy Apostles and Martyrs:
with John, Stephen, Matthias, Barnabas, Ignatius, Alexander, Marcellinus, Peter,
Felicitas, Pepetua, Agatha, Lucy, Agnes, Cecilia, Anastasia, and with all thy Saints:
within whose fellowship we beseech thee admit us, not weighing our merit, but
granting us forgiveness. Through Christ our Lord.
Per quem
By whom, O Lord, all these good things thou dost ever create, dost San ctify,
quick en, ble ss, and bestow upon us.
Per ipsum
Through him, and with him, and in him, is unto thee, O God the Father
almighty, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour, and glory:

Pater Noster
And now, commanded by saving precepts and taught by divine example, we are
bold to say,
OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy
will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead
us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. [For thine is the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.]

Then shall the Priest say silently,


Libera nos
Deliver us, we beseech thee, O Lord, from all evils, past, present, and to come:
and at the intercession of the blessed and glorious Ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of
God, with thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and with Andrew, and with all
Saints, give peace graciously in our days, that we, being holpen by the succour of
thy mercy, may both alway be free from sin and safe from all disquietude.
Through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with
thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, ever one God.
Priest. World without end.
People. Amen.
Sixth Salutation
Priest. The peace of the Lord be alway with you.
People. And with thy spirit.

Then shall the priest say silently,


Haec commixtio
May this mingling and consecration of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord
be unto us who receive it an approach to everlasting life. Amen.

Agnus Dei
In Masses of the Living, In Masses of the Dead
O Lamb of God, that takest O Lamb of God, that takest
away the the sins of the world: away the sins of the world:
Have mercy upon us. Grant them rest.

Then shall the priest say silently,


O Lord Jesus Christ, who saidst to thine Apostles, Peace I leave with you, my
peace I give unto you: regard not my sins, but the faith of thy Church; and grant
to it that peace and unity which is according to thy will. Who livest and reignest
God, world without end. Amen.

Prayer of Humble Access [kneel]


WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own
righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much
as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose
property is always to have mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the
flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies
may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious
blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Then shall the Priest receive Holy Communion first preparing himself saying
(three times and beating his breast),
Panem cealestem
I will receive the bread of heaven and call upon the Name of the Lord.
Lord I am not worthy: that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the
word only and my soul shall be healed.
Domine, non sum dignus
Lord, I am not worthy: that thou shouldest come under my roof, but speak the
word only and my soul shall be healed. (iii)
Then receiving the Body he says,
The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was given for me, preserve my body and
soul unto everlasting life. Amen.
Quid retribuam
What reward shall I give unto the Lord for all the benefits that he hath done unto
me? I will receive the Cup of Salvation and call upon the Name of the Lord. I will
call upon the Lord, which is worthy to be praised, so shall I be safe from mine
enemies.
Then receiving the Blood he says,
The Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was shed for me, preserve my body and
soul unto everlasting life. Amen.

Holy Communion [kneel]


Ecce, Agnus Dei
Behold the Lamb of God, behold him that taken away the sins of the world.
In Masses for the Dead, have mercy upon us is not said, but instead, grant them
rest, and lastly, grant them rest everlasting. Nor does the Priest strike his reast.
Then all shall say together,
Domine, non sum dignus
Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the
word only and my soul shall be healed. (iii)

Then shall the Priest purify the sacred vessels and shall read the Communion
Sentence appointed for the Day.
Before taking the first ablution the Priest silently prays,
Quod ore sumpsimus
Grant that what we have received with the mouth, O Lord, we may keep with a
pure heart; and that from this temporal gift my come unto us life everlasting.
Before taking the second ablution the Priest silently prays,
Corpus tuum, Domine
May thy Flesh which I have taken and thy Blood which I have drunk, O Lord,
cleave unto mine inmost soul; and grant that no spot of sin may abide in me,
whose meat hath been thine incorrupt and holy sacraments. Who livest and
reignest for ever and ever. Amen.

The Thanksgiving [kneel at Low Mass; stand at High Mass]


Let us pray.
ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee, for that thou dost
vouchsafe to feed us who have duly received these holy mysteries, with the
spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus
Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and
that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, which is
the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy
everlasting kingdom, by the merits of his most precious death and passion. And
we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that
we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast
prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and
the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen.

Postcommunion Collect or Collects


[kneel at Low Mass; stand at High Mass]
The Priest shall then read the Postcommunion Collect or Collects appointed for
the day, first turning the People and saying,
Seventh Salutation
Priest. The Lord be with you.
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
At the end of the Collect or Collects the People shall say, Amen. Then, the
People kneeling, the Priest shall dismiss them saying.

Dismissal and Blessing

Eight Salutation
Priest. The Lord be with you.
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Priest. Depart in peace. or Let us bless the Lord. or The Mass has ended.
Answer. Thanks be to God.
Then shall the Priest say his final private prayer,
Placeat tibi
Let this my bounden duty and service be pleasing unto thee, O Holy Trinity; and
grant that this sacrifice which I, all unworthy, have offered in the sight of thy
Majesty, may be acceptable unto thee; and be for me and all them for whom I
have offered it, a propitiation of thy loving-kindness. Through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

THE Peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds
in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: And the
Blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst
you, and remain with you always. Amen.

But in Masses of the Dead, the Dismissal is, May they rest in peace, and the

Ninth Salutation
Priest. The Lord be with you.
Answer. And with thy spirit.
Priest. The Beginning of the Gospel According to John.
Answer. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

In principio. St. John i.


IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was
God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and
without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life
was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness
comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through
him might believe. He was not that light, but was sent to bear witness of that
Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the
world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew
him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as
received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them
that believe on his name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the
flesh, nor of the will or man, but of God. Here genuflect. And the Word was made
flesh, and dwelt among us, Here rise. (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the
only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. . Thanks be to God.

The People shall stand for the departure of the Priest and Servers, and then
kneel and make their silent thanksgiving.
