1 Area X Update
Bonjour Mademoiselles! I am thrilled to announce that the theme of the 2016
Area X Celebration will be Un Petit-Djeuner Paris. (A Breakfast in Paris) Our guest
speaker will be Cardif-by-the-Sea resident and international best-selling author, Michelle
Geller! Michelles 2014 debut novel, A Paris Apartment, was inspired by the real-life story of
Marthe de Florian and her apartment, untouched for 70 years, and the discoveries of
valuable antiques and paintings it contained. On February 9th, Michelles second novel,
Ill Meet You in Paris, will be released. We will be able to purchase autographed copies of
both books at the event. I hope you can join us on Saturday, March 5 at St. Mark Golf
Club, in Lake San Marcos. Reservations will be available in January.
While shopping for bargains this year consider picking up a few items to donate to
the Celebrations silent auction. Or, perhaps you can set aside the perfect Christmas gift
(for someone else) to donate.
Now is the time for your chapters nominating committee to begin the process of
selecting the women who will lead the chapter in the 2016-2018 biennium. If your chapter
honors you with a request to become a board member, I encourage you to take their
confidence in you to heart and accept the position.

2 California State Update

The annual California State Leadership Retreat was held nearby, in Irvine, the
weekend of January 23 (9-5:00) and 24 (9-noon). The 2016 topic was Identifying

and Using Your Strengths for Excellence. Stipends are available from Area X.
The following forms are due by February 1 Chapter Presidents Report and
Necrology Report. Please submit Necrology Report regardless if you lost any members this

3 International Update
Is your chapter recruiting new
members? International has
suggested that chapters create a dream
team of prospective members, vote to offer
them membership, and then personally invite
them to join your chapter. Everything your
chapter needs to implement this new
recruitment plan can be found on the
DKG.org website. New members, especially
younger educators, are vital for continuing
the work of our Society in future years.

So, is this the time of year that your
stress mounts? Do you have pressures,
deadlines, responsibilities, expectations
just to mention a few? Mindful Schools
shares this moment of reflection.
A psychologist walked around a room while
teaching stress management to an
audience. As she raised a glass of
water, everyone expected they'd
be asked the "half empty or half
full" question. Instead, with a smile on her
face, she inquired: "How heavy is this glass of
water?"
Answers called out ranged from 8oz to 20 oz.
She replied, "The absolute weight doesn't
matter. It depends on how long I hold it. If I
hold it for a minute, it's not a problem. If I
hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my
arm. If I hold it for a day, my arm will feel
numb and paralyzed. In each case, the
weight of the glass doesn't change, but the
longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes." She
continued, "The stresses and worries in life
are like that glass of water. Think about
them for a while and nothing happens.
Think about them a bit longer and they

begin to hurt. And if you think about them
all day long, you will feel paralyzed -
incapable of doing anything."
It is important to remember to let go of
your stresses. As early in the evening as
you can, put all your burdens down.
Don't carry them through the evening
and into the night. Remember to put the
glass down!

After kicking off our meetings for the
fall with a bang, Delta Iota Chapter has
plans for several outstanding programs in
the next few months. In January well be
hearing about a subject that always
proves to be fascinatinggenealogy. It
seems as even if we are physically close
to where our families roots are planted or
have moved far away, we all want to
know more about our origins. Genealogy
is rapidly becoming a great passion for
many people worldwide, so this
presentation will be informative as well as
timely. In February, our Chapter will be
touring the Quantum Academy, led by
our own Jo-Ann Fox, former California
Teacher of the Year. This newest school in
the Escondido Union School District
continues to be in the vanguard of
implementing technology in education
for which EUSD has become well known

throughout the state and country. We also
will be electing new officers in February as Eta Eta Chapter cont
well as voting for new members who then
know her and following her progress.

I was recently diagnosed with a
reoccurrence of breast cancer after more
than twenty-two years of being cancer
free. I cannot begin to tell you how much
your cards, flowers, texts, Facebook
postings, meals, offerings of prayers, and

phone calls have meant to me as I faced

undergoing a mastectomy and whatever
treatment would be required post-surgery.
I am delighted to report that the surgery
was much easier than I had anticipated,
and the only chemo I will needs is an oral
medication taken daily for the next five
years. Thank you one and all for your
support!

I look back over the past year, I
realize what an amazing organization we
have from International down to our local
Chapters. Delta Kappa Gamma is truly
involved in Impacting Education
Worldwide. Everyone whom I have met is
professional, caring and kind. It is an honor
to be a part of such a group.
As for news of our local chapter, we once
again had our annual selling of the
Greens. The profit from the wreaths, swags,
garlands and centerpieces will go to support
our Recruitment Grant this year. We are
proud of our efforts and always look forward
to meeting our recipient and getting to

have
been
busy and
the year
has just
begun.
We held
our
Barnes and Noble book fair on the 21st of
November and donated over $300 worth
of books to Poway Unified School District
libraries. Pirates, elves, fairies, elephants,
and crayons read to kids while parent
shopped. We don't have our totals yet but
we had a lot of fun.
On the topic of donations; our members
got together to make 96 Jared boxes for
the Ronald McDonald House. Allegra
Sonza, their major gifts coordinator, will be
our meeting speaker in January.
We are getting ready for our Road Scholar
trip to Taos and Santa Fe in February and
then we'll be gearing up for our Dr. Seuss
birthday celebration at a local library in
March. We are looking forward to lots
more fun!

9 Zeta Pi Chapter

During autumn and the holiday season, Zeta
Pi sisters have remained busy and generous.
They continue to support chapter members
through happy and difficult times. Carrie
Gamble, a long-time cancer survivor,
organizes the annual Zeta Pi team to Walk
for the Cure the first Sunday of November.
This year our chapter honored Joan
Jaureguys niece who recently died from
breast cancer. Jennifers mother (Joans
sister) joined our team.

Were proud to announce that in
October, Joy Colcloughs singing group
Sweet Adelines made the finals in the
international competition in Las Vegas.
Our members are madly purchasing
tickets online to attend the groups
Christmas concert on December 9 at
Creative Performing Media Arts Middle
School.
Silent Auction Committee members:

On November 17th, about 30 ladies
gathered at the home of Karen Campbell
for Zeta Pis annual Silent Auction fund-
raiser. It was an evening full of fun,
laughs, prizes, and joyful holiday
shopping. The evening began with a
catered taco dinner and active
shopping! The funds support grants for
young ladies pursuing a teaching career.
The Silent Auction evening ended with our
members choosing families to help at
Christmas. The annual Adopt-a-Teen
Family program is organized by Susie
Bristow to help support her students
through the holiday season. Zeta Pi
members purchase gifts for the young
child and single parent from Susies class.
Zeta Pi Members wish you happiness and
good health through the holidays!
