The Plan:

Anticipatory Set:

Put this website into the URL. It will pull up a song for students to listen to and learn about
synonyms.

WEBSITE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFF4JJuiUT0

Have the students sit on the rug in front of the carpet that is in front of the swivel board. Ask the
students, Does anyone know what word matches this definition? Two different words that have
the same meaning. Have the students answer the question. After 3 or 4 have tried answering it
then tell them the word is synonym. Give them examples of synonyms: mad/angry, big/large,
finish/end, and start/begin.

Introduce the Lesson:

Tell the students, now that you know what a synonym is, we are going to do an activity.
Tell the students, Today we are going to do an activity that you get to write synonyms in
the butterfly wings but first we are going to do some examples on the smart board.

INTRODUCE ANCHOR CHART-WHOLE GROUP:

o Tell the students, We are going to look at some examples of Synonyms. Swivel
the board around so they are able to see the Synonym Anchor Chart.

o Read the definition of synonym.

o Read one of the synonyms, simple/easy. Explain how the are the same thing.

o Have the class read the rest of the synonyms that are on the piece of paper. Have
them read it aloud as a class.

o After reading the rest of the synonyms, ask them if they have any ideas of some.

If they answer correctly, write it down on the paper.

If they answer it incorrectly, show them how its wrong.

Instruction:

SYNONYM Cinnamon Match LESSON-WHOLE GROUP:

On the smart board I have some words that are taped on it. They each have a match,
which will be their synonym. The students will have to put them together. FIRST, do one
for them to show them how they stick on the smart board. Take unhappy to sad. Explain
to the students that they are two different words but have similar meanings.

Call on a student to do one. The words that they are going to match are small/tiny,
warm/toasty, fast/quick, strange/weird, freezing/cold, smelly/stinky, large/huge,
easy/simple, fast/quick, and pretty/beautiful.

o Call on a different student each time till all the words are put together correctly.

SYNONYM ACTIVITY- GUIDED PRACTICE:

o Tell the students, we are going to do a synonym activity now.

o Explain to them the activity. My example is on the desk.

o On one wing they will write a word and then on the other wing they will write the
synonym to that word.

o I have the template cut out for them already.

o On one wing they will have a word they want and on the other wing they will
write the synonym to that word.

o Show them my example, which is: Friend/Buddy

o Explain to that friend and buddy are two different words but they have similar
meanings.

o Ask if there are any questions and answer the questions if there are any.

o Tell them they can use a word off the anchor chart but try and figure out a
different synonym than the one we used.

o Pass out the butterfly templates. They each get two. **I made extras just in case**

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:

o Before sending them off to their desk, check for understanding.

o Have the students tell their shoulder partner what a synonym is.

o Have them aloud as a class say what a synonym is.

INDEPENDENT WORK:

o The students now will work on their own activity.

o The students will use both butterflies. Each butterfly should have a different word,
not the same.

o When they get done they will glue these in their Interactive Notebook. It is in
their desk.

o The glue is on the back table on the writing desk.

o After they glue it in they will write the definition of a synonym on that paper they
glue the butterflies in.

o They can color the butterflies if the want. Only use crayons!!

o This should take about 15 to 20 minutes.

o Walk around and observe while they are doing the activity and guide them if they
need help.

o When they get done working they can read to self quietly till everyone is finished
working.

CLOSURE-WHOLE GROUP:

o Once all the students are done working have them keep their journal open to see if
the students did it right.

o After you see their butterflies they can put it away.

o Say that we are going to play a game now.

o Pair the students up by lower student and higher student.

o (Im not sure if Im supposed to put students name on here, but I know how I am
going to pair them.)

o Hand each group a card.

Some groups will have two because there are plenty!

o The group that has the card with a green star will go first.
o That group will read theirs and the other groups have to listen to see if they have
the matching synonym.

o Every group will go till your back to the beginning.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION

o Walk and observe to see if the students are doing this correctly.

o The assessment will be with the synonym card game.

o Pair the students up by lower and higher level.

o Hand each group a card.

Some groups will have two because they are plenty!

o The group with the green star will go first.

o That group will read their card and the other group that has the match says it.

o Keep going till you get back to the beginning.

o Observe that each group will answer the cards correctly.

Guide the students if they need help.
