ASSIGNMENT 1

DUE DATE: February 28, 2017

PLAGIARISM ATTRACTS 50 MARKS

Problem 1 [15 Marks]

This problem is from Chapter One in the Textbook Design and Analysis of Experiment, Eight
Edition by Douglas C. Montgomery

1.2 Suppose that you want to investigate the factors that potentially affect cooking rice.

(a) What would you use as a response variable in this experiment? How would you measure the
response?

[2 + 3 Marks]

(b) List all of the potential sources of variability that could impact the response

[4 Marks]

(c) Complete the rst three steps of the guidelines for designing experiments in Section 1.4 of
the Textbook .

[6 Marks]

Problem 2

This problem is from Chapter Three in the Textbook Design and Analysis of Experiment, Eight
Edition by Douglas C. Montgomery

3.10. A product developer is investigating the tensile strength of a new synthetic ber that will
be used to make cloth for mens shirts. Strength is usually affected by the percentage of cotton
1
used in the blend of materials for the ber. The engineer conducts a completely randomized
experiment with ve levels of cotton content and replicates the experiment ve times. The data
are shown in the following table.

___________________________________________

Cotton

(a) Use the formula provided in the lecturer notes to calculate SST, SSE, SSTOTAL

(b) Use the formula provided in the Textbook to calculate SST, SSE SSTOTAL

(c) Which formula do you prefer and why do you prefer the formula?

(d) Use the following software package to conduct one way analysis of variance and use 5%
level of significance .

(i) Microsoft Excel

(ii) SPSS

(iii) Of the two software packages, which one do you prefer? And why?

(e) Is there evidence to support the claim that cotton content affects the mean tensile strength?
Use

(f) Calculate the residuals. Plot the residual against predicted value. Comment on model
adequacy.
