A General Reqmts (Assumes Unacceptable PT Results & Reqmt for Ferroxyl Test)
Ferroxyl or Ferricyanide Test: An Iron Contamination* test to
determine if cracking extends to the base metal.
A) If iron contamination* is found: SAES-W-014,
The overlay shall be repaired by complete* removal of Para. 6.7.2
the overlay to base metal in the area of fissuring prior to rewelding
A1 B) If iron contamination* is not (Commentary)
found: Only localized repairs are required
(i.e., the excavations* only need to be large enough to completely HOLD
remove the defect indications). Note: Ferroxyl test also used to POINT
verify the quality of weld overlay (free of iron contamination) after
pickling and passivation.
COMPLETE* REMOVAL OF THE OVERLAY TO BASE METAL: SAES-W-014,
This shall be verified by additional testing when Para. 6.7.2
associated with this test. After complete overlay removal is believed to
A2
be obtained, perform additional testing to verify by: (Commentary)
Etching test (Nitric Acid or Nital) OR
Chemical Analysis HOLD
SAES-W-014,
EXCAVATIONS* OF REPAIRS: Repairs to overlays are performed by
Para. 6.8
removing the defect by machining or grinding (thermal methods are not
A3 permitted). Removal of the overlay defect shall not reduce the base
(Commentary)
metal thickness below the minimum design thickness.
This shall be verified when associated with this test.
HOLD
Ferroxyl Test for Free Iron is a highly sensitive test and should be
used only when even traces of free iron or iron oxide might be
objectionable. It should be made only by personnel familiar with its
limitations. The test can be used on stainless steel to detect iron ASTM A380,
A4 contamination* (ASTM A380 meets SAES-W-014 reqmts).
Para. 7.3.4
Additional applications include verification or detection of iron-tool
marks, residual-iron salts from pickling solutions, iron dust,
iron deposits in welds, embedded iron or iron oxide, etc.

B Chemicals and its mixing

Test solution steps are: ASTM A380,
B1 A) First add Nitric Acid to
Distilled Water (Liquids First) Para. 7.3.4
B) Then add Potassium Ferricyanide last
Test Proportions to be mixed are:
ASTM A380,
B2
Para. 7.3.4

Apply solution with plastic atomizer having no iron or steel parts.

New Clean 100% Plastic Spray Bottles are used for Testing. ASTM A380,
B3 Reduce portions below according to bottle size
used. Per Safety Note 7, use Para. 7.3.4
smallest bottle possible (avoid waste)

C Application (ASTM A380, Para. 7.3.4)

ASTM A380,
Appearance of a blue stain (within 15 secs of chemical application) is
C1
evidence of surface iron contamination.
Para. 7.3.4
Record Indications Below & Attach any hand sketch or photos. ASTM A380,
C2 Photographs & Unique Marking ID (per section) are
recommended Para. 7.3.4
The applied chemical solution shall be removed from surface as quickly
as possible after testing using a second spray bottle with demin water
until A) If there
were no indications of blue stain OR
B) If necessary, ASTM A380,
C3 white vinegar or solution of 5 - 20 weight % acetic acid and scrubbing
with a fiber brush. Flush the surface with demin water several times Para. 7.3.4
after use of vinegar or acetic acid.
Follow Safety instructions as noted in MSDS
sheet while using chemicals.
