1 Overview

This chapter gives information needed for project managers and foremen, for
the presentation to the customer and site planning.

3BK 17416 1011 RJZZA Ed.09 7 / 30

1 Overview

1.1 Presentation
The scenario allows to activate Abis via satellite link.
This scenario can be performed at each time an Abis link is asked to work via
satellite (through add, move...BTS or Abis operations).
Only G3 and G4 BTS can support Abis link via satellite.
Satellite BTS must be configured as free run (no PCM synchronized) (OCXO
synchronization).
In case of chain configuration, only the first BTS can support the physical
Abis via satellite link, the downstream BTSs will work as being satellite BTSs
and thus must be G3 or G4 BTS.

Note: A BSS allows to support both terrestrial and satellite BTSs.

Ring configuration is not supported on impacted Abis..
Satellite links can not be used on both Abis and Ater interfaces due to
transmission delay via satellite.
There is no specific display at OMC-R/HMI for satellite feature.
Transmission supervision is made only via OML for the sattellite BTSs.

The following recommendations should be respected for well functioning

of the Abis satellite:

to use the statistic multiplexing 64 Kb/s RSL

to have at least 1 SDCCH per TRX due to the RSL

to use the point to point configuration

the TS0 should be included in the list of transmitted timeslots from modems
on both directions (downlink and uplink) on the satellite link.

In the cases 1 to 5 below and after, in the procedure, circuit satellite means that
the satellite feature is activated only from circuit traffic point of view. GPRS
satellite refers strict to GPRS parameters set to support satellite.

This method may be impacted by some restrictions. Before you start, consult
BSS Restriction List and Operator Hints corresponding to the SW version
you use!

1 Overview

1.1.1 Cases
The following cases apply for the method:

C1:
initial state: no GPRS on BSS, no circuit satellite, no GPRS satellite
final state: no GPRS on BSS, circuit satellite, no GPRS satellite

C2:
initial state: no GPRS on BSS, circuit satellite, no GPRS satellite
final state: GPRS on BSS, circuit satellite, GPRS satellite

C3:
initial state: no GPRS on BSS, no circuit satellite, no GPRS satellite
final state: GPRS on BSS, circuit satellite, GPRS satellite

C4:
initial state: GPRS on BSS, circuit satellite, no GPRS satellite
final state: GPRS on BSS, circuit satellite, GPRS satellite

C5:
initial state: GPRS on BSS, no circuit satellite, no GPRS satellite
final state: GPRS on BSS, circuit satellite, GPRS satellite

C6: CRC4 is OFF for the BIUA and the BTS

In this case the intervention on BSC site is necessary after each reprogramming
BIUA.

C7: CRC4 is ON for the BIUA and the BTS

In this case:
the intervention on the BSC site is no more necessary after each BIUA
programmation

some errors (BER10E-4) can be seen on both, BIUA and modem site, but
the voice quality is good.

1 Overview

1.2 Preparation
1.2.1 Prerequisites
The following prerequisites apply:

The satellite link (see also modem) must be already tested (programmed)
and installed.

The CRC4 must be set on OFF at the modem site.

If the satellite link is not equipped with Memotec CX series, the modems
must be set to transmit the TS0 into both Uplink and Downlink directions.

BSC and BTS site are clean, tidy and easily reachable.

The software package for satellite, already downloaded.

For BSS with GPRS, GPRS satellite must be preceded by circuit satellite
activation, like is described in this procedure.

For BSS with GPRS, if the MFS was not migrated with the customized Bul
file for GPRS over satellite, the customized BUL file for terrestrial and the
one for satellite values must be available.

1.2.2 Site-specific Information

Abis links Identifier for Abis via Satellite. For chain configuration, the
downstream BTSs identifiers.

Type of modem that will be used on the Abis link.

2 Scenario

2.3 Scenario Description

The detailed tasks for Activating Abis Satellite link are described after.
This scenario aims to configure the BSC with BSC timers that are suitable for
supporting satellite BTSs.
The impacted parameters for circuit traffic, which modification is applied by the
BSC according to the Connection_type, are: T200, K_VAL_OML, K_VAL_RSL
(like in B6.2) and N200.
The impacted parameters for GPRS traffic are: type CAE on cell
(Round_trip_delay, Tcorr, Testab, BS_CV_MAX, T3192), and type CST on
MFS (T_one_block, Trelease, T_ACK_WAIT, T_ack_wait_DRX_PCCCH,
T_delayed_DL_TBF_rel_radio). In this procedure, the CAE parameters are
the only ones activated, between the GPRS parameters, if the CST MFS
parameters are already modified during the migration of MFS. If not, both type
parameters must be activated for satellite values.
