SUMMARY OF TED FAILONS TAGAS NG MINAHAN

The covered story of the docu-interview gives you an idea about the effects
of the accidental waste spill of Philex Mining Corporation to the people and to the
land of Benguet last 2012. It was divided into 5 parts. The summary of each part is
as follows:

Part 1: This part talked about the general theme of the show. It showed the land as
how it was affected by the mining spill. It gave an overview on how people were
affected in terms of fishing, water supply for the farms, and as a source of
electricity. It also showed a short interview with an engineer of Philex Mining Corp.
claiming that they were removing 2000 bags of mining waste every day.

Part 2: Philex Mining Corp. was blaming the environment for the accidental mining
waste. A representative from the company said that no one can foretell how people
can be devastated by Mother Nature. This part also explained how the tailings
pond (imbakan ng dumi) was set up and how it got a leak that caused the spill. Ted
Failon emphasized that Philex Mining Corp was facing 3 penalties and one penalty
was priced around 1 Billion pesos. The government had suspended the operation of
the mining corporation until the payment for the penalty has been met.

Part 3: In this part, it showed clips of protesters rallying for the stop of mining in the
Philippines. The governor of South Cotabato was interviewed since there was a plan
to open another mining field under his jurisdiction. The governor had indicated that
he was against this plan and would not allow the proposed plan to take into action.

Part 4: This showed the previous disasters caused by different mining fields in
Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. Ted Failon showed that the land was not only
affected but the ocean as well since waste went directly to it. Residents of the said
lands were complaining how it affected their way of living and their health as well.

Part 5: The conclusion talked about if the gain outweighed the means of mining. It
also talked about that it was not the fault of the government because the Philippine
Law had loopholes. Ted Failon concluded the show by saying that the mining
companies were blaming the environment for the mining disasters in the
Philippines.
