Objectives This subject aims to introduce the basic concepts and essential
knowledge of the applications and technology of the Internet and World
Wide Web. It provides a conceptual framework to understand the
operation of the Internet and to understand how computers connect and
communicate with each other. This subject also helps to develop
students analytical ability in network technology.
Intended Learning Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to:
Outcomes
(a) understand the basic concepts and applications of the Internet and
World Wide Web.
(c) use current Internet Technology necessary for daily life application.
Internetworking Technology
Concepts on internetworking; Network hardware; Transmission basics
and media; Network architectures and topologies; OSI model; TCP/IP
model; Protocols and standards; TCP, UDP and IP; IP addresses; MAC
addresses; Routing; Domain name system.
Internet Applications
Client-server interactions; Electronic mail; Telnet; FTP; Electronic
publishing, Electronic fund transfer; Electronic data interchange;
Internet service providers; Application service providers; Internet
applications and services in Hong Kong.

Internet Security
Privacy and security issues; Security risks and measures; Firewall;
Virtual Private Network.
Teaching/Learning Lectures will focus on the introduction and explanation of key Internet
Methodology concepts and theories, with specific reference made to the latest Internet
Technology wherever appropriate. Simple exercises and activities may
be arranged to stimulate students interest in the subject.
