a) Load Calculations

The following shown portal frame is to be designed for the gravity load and wind load as per
IS code provisions. To start the analysis, the dimension of the member should be known to
calculate dead weight and moment of Inertia.

The following thumb rules have been used for approximate dimensioning of members.

1. Beams

l
d = 10- 16, Based on Serviceability Criteria

pt = 0.5- 0.8%, Singly Reinforced Beam

2. Slabs
l
d = 32, Based on Serviceability Criteria for Continuous Slabs
pt = 0.4- 0.5%
3. Columns
Column width should be greater than or equal to the width of the beam.
Based on approximate analysis, the following dimensions for members hve been
selected.
Beam = 300 mm 500 mm
Column= 400 mm 400 mm
Depth of the slab, D= 130 mm

So, the following schematic diagram of elevation can be drawn based on effective
length and effective height.

Centre to centre distance of the column = 8.4 m

leff of the beam
Clear span plus depth of the slab (l + d) = 8.45 m

Top column, heff = 3.0+0.25+0.25 = 3.5 m

heff of the column
Bottom column, heff = 4+0.25 = 4.5 m

As per IS 875(2)-1978 and IS 875(3)-1978 for live load wind load respectively.
Floor load = 3.0 kN/m2 for class room (Table 1, IS 875- Part 2)
Roof load= 1.5 kN/m2
Basic Wind speed, Vb= 47 m/s for Chennai locations
Design wind speed, Vz= Vb k1 k2 k3
k1=0.99, k2= 0.91 and k3= 1.0
Design wind speed Vz = Vb k1 k2 k3 = 470.990.911.0 = 42.34 m/s
Pz = 0.6 (Vz)2 = 0.6 42.342 = 1075.7 MPa
