In the world everyone has the potential for greatness and some will put all their effort

into

reaching it, and others have already reached it. One of the people who has always tried her

hardest to make something of herself, and from an early point in her career reached that point of

greatness, is a nuclear physicistDr. Maria Jose Garcia Borge. Not only has she helped

developed an appreciation for the nuclear areafor those around herbut she has also formed

herself as a physicist in the world. Dr. Maria Jose Garcia Borge has developed herself as a

physicist through her early life, post-graduate work, and the study of exotic nuclei.

Dr. Maria Jose Garcia Borge was brought into the world November 9th, 1956 by Jose

Garcia Prol and Esther Borge Rodriguez in Spain. Growing up she said she always wanted to

know how things work. She made the claim that math and problem solving came easy to her,

which is known to be extremely important to push one in the scientific field. Along with being

pushed in the field, she made the clear point that even those the field had been seen as a

predominately male field she had always felt as one more and never make any differences by

sex.

The world of research and studies truly began when Dr. Maria Jose Garcia Borge

received her doctorate in Physics at the Universidad Complutense in 1982. After the prestigious

reach she began working as a professors assistant at the University of Arizona, continuing on as

postdoctoral research. Afterwards she became a fellow for the European Organization of

Nuclear Research. Following as a researcher for the National Research Council; Madrid and a

conference organizer for the Univesidad Internacional Menndez Pelayo or UIMP. She

continues her work as a leader and spokesperson for ISOLDE Radioactive Ion Beam facility.

As Dr. Maria Jose Garcia Borge explained, the term exotic nuclei was coined in the

sixties to name the nuclei that are difficult to produce in laboratories. With that knowledge she
was able to continue her studies by testing the nuclei under different circumstances as well as

testing the limits and boundaries of the existing nuclei. She explained that a group she had

conducted research with had been able to prove that for halo nuclei the scattering does not

follow the Rutherford scattering formula. With that knowledge her career was really thrusted

into the world of greatness and reaching all of her designated potential.

Developing yourself has been proven to come in many steps, all which Dr. Maria Jose

Garcia Borge has completed in her early life, post-graduate work, and through the study of exotic

nuclei. With new knowledge she can continue her path of work and research and gain even more

every day. A woman of science she was, a woman of science she is, and a woman of science she

will stay.
