Editorial

NISHA V. S
Magazine Editor
Dear all,
This is a time of great changes. In education too we
see fast changes. The students today are individuals a
real persons with feelings of self - respect, sensitivity,
responsibility and compassion. We need to recognize,
appreciate, applaud and foster the fine blend of sensibil-
ities in a child - and thus this magazine is to be viewed
as a launch pad for the childrens creativity to blossom
naturally. As the saying goes, mind like parachute works
best when opened. This humble initiative is to set the bud-
ding minds free allowing them to roam free in the realm of
imagination and experience to create a world of beauty in
words and art works.
This school attains its eminence in the first place
through the achievements of children. This has been given
enough print space in the school spirit which is built up
within the school through the collective actions, thoughts
and aspirations. All these, I believe would spur higher
growth and enterprise in children.
My thanks are due to the Principal, Teachers and
Students to have been of immense help in breathing life into
these pages.
Good Luck
Fr. Dr.Thomas Kuzhinapurath
Principal

Change is the prerogative of nature. Change can demarcate

the progress or regression of any worthwhile endeavour. A positive
change is what everyone looks forward to. Education is indeed a
process or positive change. Most educational institutions are
moving towards this positive change. They are involved in the
process of Nation building through creation and dissemination
of knowledge and service to community. The Kothari Commission
(1964 - 66) remarked that the destiny of India is being shaped in
the classrooms. This throws light on the importance of quality
education, which alone brings the desirable changes in the
society. Our students remain the key instruments which will help in
realisation of these changes.
Any piece of creative work will surely give rich dividends in
this aspect. I believe that our first school. Magazine Waves of
Light is a golden opportunity for our students to express their
inherent talents. I take this opportunity to congratulate the earnest
effort of all the young minds and guiding teachers of St. Marys
Central School, Pottayil.
Wishing you all success in your entire endeavour.
Mrs. Geetha A. M
Headmistress

I have the pleasure to present Waves of Light the School

Magazine of St. Marys Central School Pottayil.
The young minds should be encouraged to think and question
rather than remembering what is being thought. Our school aims
at all-round development of our students.
The annual magazine showcase the achievements of our
students. The role of the teacher is to nurture the skills and talents
of the of the student as a facilitator. The School magazine contains
the contributions that our school has made in last academic year.
The school magazine has its own role as an integral part of educa-
tion system. This magazine is going to showcase the strength of our
institute.
Dear students, it is my message to you all that the people of
fine character live by their rules. They are honest and are committed
to truthfulness. True character thus includes the capacity for self
discipline.
The character creates self-respect which leads to high self es-
teem. We, may choose friends and share responsibilities. Always re-
member to uphold the dignity of the people. Be always ready to give
preference to the other. What you are is Gods gift to you and what
you become is your gift to God. Have something to live for. Bring out
the best in your life.
On this occasion I would like to convey my best wishes to the
teachers, students, parents and school management for the success
in all their endeavours.
With best wishes
Bijukumar. R
PTA President

I am very glad to know that The St.Marys Central

Strong or Weak

T here was a proud teak tree in the forest. He was tall

and strong. There was a small herb next to the tree.
The teak tree said, I am very handsome and strong. No
one can defeat me Hearing this the herb replied, Dear friend
too much pride is harmful. Even the strong will fall one day.
The teak ignored the herbs words. He continued to praise
himself. A strong wind blew. The teak stood firmly. Even when
it rained, the teak stood strong by spreading its leaves.
At the same time, the herb bowed low. The teak made
fun of the herb. One day there was a storm in the forest. The
herb bowed low. As usual growing stronger, the teak could no
longer bear it. He felt his strength giving away. He fell down.
This was the end of the proud tree. When everything was calm
the herb stood straight. He looked around. He saw the proud
teak had fallen.
In this story we learn a lesson The proud will not live
even half of his life.

An Ideal Student LEKSHMY M. S.
Teacher

A student means one who studies subjects. But gen-

erally this word is used for boys and girls who study
in the Schools or colleges. Curiosity is the most important
quality in a good student. He should have the curiosity to
understand the subject fully. His curiosity, will make him read
and study. It will make him always happy he will not never be
dull or boring but always be thrilling and exciting. A good
student should be intelligent also.
A good ideal student must try to develop himself phys-
ically, emotionally and mentally. He should play some game
and keep himself healthy. He should remember that a healthy,
mind lives in a healthy body. An ideal student should have
sound body and a sound mind.
An ideal student is respectful and obedient to his teach-
ers. Love and respect for our teachers should be the motto of
ideal students. If we love our teachers, we try to follow them
and become like them. If we love them, we like, move, feel,
speak and think like them.
In his living habits an ideal student is pure and simple. He
is very honest. He keeps away from bad company and grows
into a good citizen. He is regular and punctual.
An ideal student is patriot at heart. He keeps his eyes
and ears open. He listens to all but acts according to the
dictates of his mind.
A shy, self centred book worm cannot become a good
citizen. An ideal student loves living, playing signing, talking
and making pleasant jokes. He loves his fellow students and
is always ready to share their pleasures and pains, their joys
and sorrows.

Invention of

Zero was invented independently by the Babylonians, Mayans, and
Indians through ancient civilizations already knew the concept of nothing, they
did not have a symbol for letter for it.
History of Maths
The Sumerian were the first people in the world to hair introduced a
counting system. The Babylonians used the Sumerian counting system to devel-
op number system. They had a place-holder symbol, to show that there were
no tens in 1101, for instance:
600 years after the Babylonians, the Mayans also developed Zero as a
place holder.
When zero became a concept ?
The concept of zero did come from the Babylonian system, b ut it was in
india where zero became an important part of the number system.

25
School Magazine 2016-17

In india, mathematical equations were chanted in poetry. Words which

meant void, sky, space all represented nothingness or zero
The indian scholar Pin-gala used binary numbers and was the first to use
the Sanskrit word Sunya for zero. In 628 AD, Brahmagupta used a dot
below numbers to symbolized zero before that, mathematicians always used a
blank space to show zero or nothing.
Brahmagupta wrote rules for mathematical operations like addition and
subtraction, using zero.
Aryabhatta used zero in the decimal system.
How zero got its name ?
zero soon spread to China and the Middle East. Mahammed ibn_Musa
al_Khowarizmi a Persian Mathematician proposed that a small circle be used if
no number was being used in the tens place.
The Arabians called this sip fir or empty. Al_Khowrizmi used zero to
invent algebra.
Later the number system was brought to Europe, wound 900 AD, by
the Arab traders and was called the Hindu- Arabic system. Till then the Ro-
mans, did not have zero in their number system. Zero is now an integral part of
mathematics all over the world.
The name Zero derives ultimately from the Arabic word sifr which also
gives us the word cipher
