successful integration and assimilation
into mainstream society. Today across
India, the blind are often confined within
the four walls of their home, closing them

offered by the world. Jyothirgamaya offers
an Eye for the Blind, giving them a glimpse
into our beautiful world and everything it
has to offer!

Our Mission
what makes Jyothirgamaya different
Many blind people in Kerala are unable to move around alone. They are totally
dependent on sighted people to take them out. They live out their lives in
seclusion--confined to the four walls of their homes. The main reasons for this
situation are lack of awareness, poverty, long distances, and negligence on the
part of their families. Further, many parents are reluctant to bring their blind
children to the training centres. Jyothirgamaya has the solution to this problem.
We provide them with need-based individualized training at their homes.
Through our unique approach, where the school is taken to their doorsteps :

Orientation and Mobility Training

Orientation and mobility (O and M) training is a vital aspect in the life of
every visually challenged person. It paves the way for him or her to
move around freely with a lot of confidence. At Jyothirgamaya, we cover
all aspects of indoor and outdoor mobility. Our people get trained in necessary cane
techniques, ascending and descending stairs, road crossing, boarding public transport.

Echo Location
Do you know any blind people who clap their hands, stamp their feet,
or make a little sound with their mouth while walking around? Do you
know why they make these sounds? These people use a specific aspect
of hearing that we call echo location. For blind people, echo location is liberating and a
unique aspect of mobility.

Jyothirgamaya is the first institution to initiate the use of echo location in the state of
Kerala. Using this technique, blind people can use echo for their orientation. It is this
echo information that gives a blind person more information about their environment
much more than just by touching. The use of echo makes it possible for blind people
to get information about greater distances.

Adapted Physical Education

Adapted Physical Education is a diverse programme of developmental
activities, exercises, games, rhythms and sports designed to meet the
unique physical education needs of individuals with disabilities. It plays
a vital role in increasing the confidence level, improving body language. Jyothirgamaya trains its
participants in adapted physical education during its camps, enabling them to be physically fit.
Assistive Technology Training
In todays day and age, it is highly essential for everyone to be well versed
and clued into the world of computer and information technology.
This is more so for the visually impaired who can benefit immensely
from IT and its applications. Jyothirgamaya provides basic and advanced training in Windows,
using NVDA screen reading software, Mac, Android, iOS, the use of Angel Pro, and other assistive
devices that they require in their daily life.

Many organizations in Kerala concentrate only on Linux training which is not very beneficial for the
blind participants. Most companies use Microsoft Windows and expect their employees to be well
-versed in it. Keeping this in mind, we concentrate on Windows training at Jyothirgamaya. We also
provide Apple Mac training which is yet another unique aspect in the field of technology and is not
taught by other organizations. We attempt to break technology barriers and provide Apple Mac
training to the blind, to increase their range of opportunities in the real world.

Communicative English and IELTS training

English is the most widely spoken language through out the world, and
is vital for ones growth and development in every sense. To acquire a
dignified job and earn a respectable position in society, a working
knowledge of English is vital for people living with disabilities. It is the key to their success.
Many visually challenged people in Kerala study only in blind schools which follow the
regional language as the medium of instruction. As a result, they are not acquainted with
English, cutting them off from many career opportunities. At Jyothirgamaya, we provide
them with communicative English training, and also IELTS training to sighted candidates
who wish to pursue their careers abroad.

Yoga for the Blind

Yoga is yet another beautiful aspect of life that the blind do not get a
chance to learn. This is due to lack of knowledge on how to teach them.
Jyothirgamaya solves this problem, by teaching the blind Yoga techniques
that improve their flexibility, physical fitness, concentration level, while giving
them relief and relaxation.

Community Sensitization
Jyothirgamaya believes in integration of the blind into mainstream society. Parental Awareness Programme
This can only be done if the blind and the sighted are aware of one anothers
potentialities and limitations. Sighted people often segregate their blind Jyothirgamaya provides counselling and guidance to parents of blind
colleagues at school, college and work. This is because they do not know how children, as they are often in a state of shock and anxiety. Our awareness
to interact with them properly. We conduct sensitization programmes in various programme gives them a platform to express their worries, and to learn
educational institutions and companies to make the sighted world aware of the how to properly deal with their blind children so as to see other parents
