Lesson Plan: See 10's in teen numbers

C.C & State Standard:

CC.K.NBT.1
Work with numbers X.1-1"9 to gain foundations for place value.
Obiective: SWBAT to show with the manipulatives how to make teen numbers
using counters and the L0-counter strip.
Student Friendly Obiective: Using your counters and numbers, make what the
ladybug asks using the correct grouping that she likes to see.
Assessmenh Assess the children as you go around with the ladybug to see if they
are correctly grouping their counters.
Key Vocabulary: 10-counter strips
Anticipatory Set Tell the children that a friend has come out to help us with our
math today. Bring out the Ladybug and ask the children if they remember what the
ladybug really iikes. Hand out the materiais to the children.
Recall Prior Knowledge: The tens ladybug will ask the children what they
remember about making the number 14 with the counters and the 10 counter
strips.
Input/Modeling: Tell the children to get out their counters and show the number
12 so that the ladybug will be able to read it. Tell the children that the ladybug is
going to come around and look at their numbers. The iadybug is going to read their
numbers and rnake sure that they are doing it right. Tell the children to get the
number tiles 10 and Z out and make the number 12. Talk to the children about
putting the number 2 on the 0 in the L0 to make the number 12. Tell the children to
put the 10 on the side where their 10 counters are and the 2 cln the side where their
2 counters are. Tell the children to add the addition sign to make it a math problem.
Have the ladybug tell the children that there is an easier way that they can show 12
for her to see. Gir.,e children the ten counter strip and tell thern to make 12 and use
the number tiles to represent it. Again have the children put the 2 on the 0 in the 10
and show them that it makes 12. As they do this repeat with the children, "Twelve is
10 and 2. 10 and 2 makes 12."
Check for Understanding/Guided Practice: Now tell the children that they need
to make the number 13 with their counters. Have the Ten bug go around and act
interested in those who made correct groupings. Have them use the number tiles to
show the number 13. Have the children alternate between putting the 3 over the 0
and putting them apart.
Independent Practice: The children will practice independently as put the
counters correctly on their board. I will go around and look at them with the ten bug
to make sure they are doing it right"
Closure: Ask the children, "Can you use the counters on the 10-counter strips
instead of the group counters? Why?" Tell the children that we can call the 10-
counter strips a fast ten because when we use it we do not have to count to 10, we
already know it is 1"0.
