Purpose
The purpose of this lab experiment is to investigate the effect of the jellies and
potatoes in hypertonic solution and hypotonic solution.

Hypothesis
1. If jelly is soaked in distilled water, then the size of the Jelly will be swell by the
higher water concentrate in the distilled water will osmosis into jelly with lower
water concentrate.
2. If Jelly is soaked in salt water, then the size of the Jelly will be shrink by the
higher water concentrate in the jelly will osmosis out from the jelly to salt
water.
3. If potato is soaked in distilled water, then the size of the potato will be swell by
the higher water concentrate in the distilled water will osmosis into the potato
with lower water concentrate.
4. If potato is soaked in salt water, then the size of the potato will be shrink by
the higher water concentrate in the potato will osmosis out from the potato to
salt water.

Materials
3 pieces of jellies
Half a potato
6 Beakers
Electronic Balance
Distilled water
Concentrated salt water
Knife
Weighing paper
Markers
Lab Coat
2 Graduated cylinders
Methods
1. Collect the materials that your group needs (3 Jelly and Half a Potato)
2. Use the knife to cut the potato into 3 equal pieces
3. Use the electronic balance to find the mass of your jelly. Remember to lay
down a piece of weighing paper and set to zero.
4. Record your data
5. Record descriptive observations about the jelly prior to the experiment.
6. Measure the initial volume of the jelly and the potato and record your data.
7. Fill your 1st beaker halfway with distilled water. Put one of your jelly into the
beaker. Set the beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker using marker.
8. Fill your 2st beaker with concentrated salt solution halfway. Put your 2nd jelly
into that beaker. Set beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker using
marker.
9. Put your 3rd jelly into an empty beaker without putting anything in it. That
should be your control.
10. Put the 4th beaker halfway with distilled water. Put one of your potato pieces
into the beaker. Set the beaker aside for one hour. Label the beaker.
11. Put the 5th beaker halfway with concentrated salt solution halfway. Put your
second potato pieces into that beaker and set it aside for an hour. Label the
beaker.
12. Place your last piece of potato pieces into the last beaker, empty. That is your
control for the potato. Label the beaker.
13. Make sure you label all the beakers distilled water or concentrated salt
solution with some markers.
14. After one hour, come back and look at each of the beakers and record the
data volume and mass of both the jellies in two beaker and both the potato in
two other beakers.
15. Also record the descriptive data for what the jelly and the potato look like now
after being soaker for an hour.
16. Calculate the percent change in volume and mass of each jelly and potato.

Result
After soaking potatoes and jellies in distilled water and salt water, the result showed
that both can change the appearance of the object by brighten their color and
change the size. Distilled water increased volume and mass of the potato and the
jelly while salt water decreased them.

Analyzing Results Questions

1. What happen to the jellies after being soaked in distilled water and salt water
for an hour? Why? Be descriptive and detailed in your answer. Use your
knowledge of membrane transport.
After jellies are being soaked in distilled water and salt water for an hour, a jelly that
soaked in distilled water has 50% increase in it volume and 56.7% in it mass
because of solute concentration in the jelly is higher than outside and a jelly that
soaked in salt water has 50% decrease in it volume and 27.6% in it mass because a
salt water outside has more solute concentration than inside the jelly that make a
water go to a place that has more solute concentration to increase a volume of
solvent by using an osmosis to make a balance between solute and solvent and
because of water go in and out of the jelly, it make jelly becomes brighter.
2. What happen to the potatoes after being soaked in distilled water and salt
water for an hour? Why? Be descriptive and detailed in your answer. Use your
knowledge of membrane transport.
After the potatoes are being soaked in distilled water and salt water for an hour, the
potatoes that is being soaked in both distilled water and salt water have their color
brighten because of the movement of water. The potato in distilled water have 25%
increased in volume and 15.7% increased in mass because of the higher
concentration of water to the lower concentration of solute in distilled water. So when
water is not removing from the potato, it caused volume and mass to increase.
Meanwhile, the potato that is being soaked in salt water have 25% decreased in
volume and 21.5% decreased in mass because of the lower concentration of water
that went to the higher concentration of solute to maintain equilibrium caused
volume and mass to decreased because of water that left the jelly.

Conclusion
In conclusion, Osmosis occur when there are two region with different concentrate
condition in the same place, the molecule of two solutions become unstable and
water molecules will travel around to stabilise the condition. The solution with lower
solute concentration will travel to the area with higher solute concentration or moving
from hypotonic to hypertonic. In the first case, the distilled water is hypotonic and
water molecule inside the potato and jelly is hypertonic which have higher solute
concentration, therefore water molecules move from the solution into the jelly and
potato, while in the second case, the concentrated salt solution is hypertonic, potato
and jelly shrink when put in salt solution because salt water have more solute
concentration and fewer free water molecule so the water molecule inside the potato
and jelly will move across the membrane to form an isotonic condition between two
solutions ,
