Drilling Machine

Drilling is the operation of making hole in a

workpiece by using a rotating tool called a drill.
The sharp edges ground at lower end of the of
the drill cuts the material by peeling it circularly
layer by layer.
The removed metal chips gets curled and
escapes through the helical groove provided in
the drill.
A power operated machine tool, which holds the
drill in its spindle rotating at high speeds and
produces a hole in a workpiece is called Drilling
Machine.

Drilling Machine Classification
Drilling machines are classified depending upon
the size and class of work for which they are
used.
They can be broadly classified as follows;
1. Portable drilling machine
2. Bench drilling machine
3. Pillar drilling machine
4. Radial drilling machine
5. Multiple spindle drilling machine
6. Gang drilling machine

Portable drilling machine
It is a very small,
compact & self
contained unit
carrying a small
electric motor.
Used structural
fabrications &
assemblies where
small holes are
required (up to 12
mm diameter) for
short depths.

Bench drilling machine
It is a light duty machine used to drill holes up to 15
mm size and usually placed on a work bench.
The feed is given by hand and hence the operator
can sense the cutting action and apply required
pressure while drilling.
A bench drilling machine consists of the following
parts;
1. Base
2. Vertical column
3. Work table
4. Spindle & drill chuck
5. Feed mechanism

3. Work table: It is used to

locate the work to be drilled.
It can be moved and clamped
to the column at any desired
position.

rack attached to it. The rack
is engaged by a pinion for
vertical movement by hand.

Upright or Pillar drilling machine
It similar to bench
drilling machine,
except that it has
power feeding
mechanism and used
for heavier work.
The vertical column
may be either round
or box type.
Used for drilling hole
upto 50 mm
diameter.

Radial drilling machine
Motor for moving arm It is used for large work pieces.
Drill spindle motor
It consists of a heavy base & a

vertical column.
A long radial arm can move
along the column & also swing

around it.
Work Table
The arm carries a drill head
Base
which can also move to & fro
along it.
These combinations of motion
offers great flexibility for
positioning the drill bit over the
work.
Radial drilling machines are
used for drilling hole up to 50
mm diameter within very close
limits.

Multiple spindle drilling machine
Multiple spindle
drilling machines are
used in mass
production for
drilling several
simultaneously.
The drill head
assembly has several
spindles and feeding
motion is obtained
by raising the table.

Gang drilling machine
When a number of single
spindle drilling columns
are placed side by side
on a common base and
have a common work
table, it is known as gang
drilling machine.
Each spindle has its own
power unit.
This type of machine is
generally preferred
when the work has
undergo successive
operations such as
drilling, reaming,
countersinking &

Drilling Machine Operations
Apart from drilling, a number of other
operations that can be performed on a drilling
machine are;
1. Reaming
2. Boring
3. Counterboring
4. Countersinking
5. Spot facing
6. Tapping

Reaming
Reaming is the operation
of smoothening the
surface of the drilled holes
with a reamer.
A reamer is similar to the
twist drill, but has straight
flutes.
It removes only small
amount of material and
produces a smooth finish.
P R Venkatesh,Mech Dept, RVCE, B'lore
Boring
Boring
tool
Boring is the operation
of enlarging a hole by
means of an adjustable
Drilled
hole
cutting tool with only
one cutting edge.
It is used when a
suitable drill size is not
available.

Counterbore
Counterboring
Tool
Counterboring is the
Counterbored hole
Pilot
operation of enlarging a
hole for a small depth.
It is done to
accommodate a socket
head screw cap screw
bolt or nut.
A projection called pilot
which has same
diameter as the drilled
hole is provided to guide
the tool while
counterboring.
P R Venkatesh,Mech Dept, RVCE, B'lore
Countersinking
Countersink
Tool
Countersinking is the
Countersink
operation of producing
a conical seating at the
end of a hole to
accommodate the
conical head of rivets
& screws.
It may also be done to
deburr the holes.

Spot facing
Spotfacing
Tool Spotfacing is the
operation of
Spotfaced machining a flat,
surface
circular surface
around a hole to
provide a seat for a
bolt head, nut or
washer.
The spot face cutter is
similar to a
counterbore, but has
teeth on the end only.

Tapping
Tapping is the process of
cutting internal threads by
Tap means of a tool called tap
Workpiece Slow spindle speeds are
used for this operation.
The tap will be held in a
chuck which is inserted
into the spindle of drilling
machine.
Taps come in a set of three;
namely starting tap, plug
tap & bottoming tap and
are used in the same
sequence.
