Assignment Fall 2015

Module: Digital Communication (ELEC 20004) ID NUMBER
Level: 2 Max. Marks: 30
Session: All

Instructions to Student:
Each question carries 6 marks.
Soft copy of the assignment is to be submitted online in Moodle through Turnitin .
Each student has to do the assignment individually.
Explain your notations and steps explicitly and clearly. Write neatly and legibly.
You can refer books in Library or use internet resource. But you should not cut and
paste material from internet nor provide photocopied material from books. The
assignment answers should be in your own words after understanding the matter
from the above resources.
viva will be conducted for the assignment.

If the assignment is copied in part or whole from other student then MEC policy on
cheating will be applied and Zero marks will be awarded. There will be no chance for
second submission.
Title Page must have Assignment Name, Module name, your name, ID, and section.
Use the front page available in Moodle.
Any late submissions will result in the deduction of marks as mentioned in the
Module Information Guide (MIG).
Refer MIG for feedback dates on assignment.
Refer to the MIG for MEC policy on plagiarism and late submission.

1. A continuously operating coherent BPSK system is made by an engineer. He

claims that it is having an average error probability of 10 -5. The system produced
1000 errors in a day when tested with a data rate of 1000 bits/s and the single-

sided noise power spectral density is N o=1010 W/Hz. He also claim that the

system is capable of maintaining the error rate even if the received power is as
low as 10-6 W. Do you agree with his claims? Give justifications to your answer.
(6 Marks)
2. In a sound recording studio 15 microphones are placed at different locations.
The data from each microphones are brought to a processing centre over wires
and are sampled, quantized, binary coded and time-division multiplexed. The
multiplexed data are now transmitted to a master recording station. Assuming
each signal bandwidth is 22 KHz, the acceptable error in sample amplitude is
0.25% of the peak signal amplitude and a sampling rate of twice the Nyquist
rate. Determine the minimum cable bandwidth needed to transmit these data.

3. In one bit PCM system, the signal is sampled at a rate of 8KHz. The maximum

signal amplitude Determine:

a. The minimum value of the step size ( ) required to avoid slope overload for

a sinusoidal signal frequency of 1200Hz;

(1 Marks)
b. The granular noise power No if the voice signal bandwidth is 3.5 kHz;
(1 Marks)
c. Assuming that the voice signal is sinusoidal, determine signal power S o and
the SNR (Signal to Noise Ratio);
(1 Mark)
d. Assuming that the voice signal amplitude is uniformly distributed in the
range (-1, 1), determine signal power So and the SNR; and

e. The minimum transmission bandwidth for NRZ L coding

4.
a. In a baseband transmission of digital data it is observed that the waveform
changes its value at the middle of every bit period irrespective of the binary
value of the signal. Which of the following schemes may be used in the
transmitter system? NRZ-L, Uni polar RZ, Bipolar RZ, RZ AMI, Bi-phase

data 10110001101.

b. Compare BPSK and QPSK in terms of error performance and data rate.
(4 Marks)
5. In M-ary Phase shift keying the number of levels M can be two or more. Consider
two systems A and B using M-ary PSK with M=4 and 16 respectively. Compare
systems A and B in terms of complexity of system, error performance and speed
of data transfer. (6 Marks)
