The Earth Magic Oracle card deck was written by Steven D. Farmer. Oracle cards are a deck of

illustrated cards that have many different purposes, including but not limited to: divination,

fortune-telling, astrology, and spiritual guidance.1 They are often confused with tarot cards

because they both give insight to a situation of the readers choosing, because of this, some

people call them modern day tarot cards.2

What Are Oracle Cards?

Oracle cards are used to answer any question the user may ask and give spiritual guidance, or

knowledge about oneself, to whoever uses the cards. Many use the oracle cards to discover

answers to questions about ones life, future, or spiritual path.3 The meaning of each card drawn

during a reading is the collective answer to the question asked. The answer is open to

interpretation. The cards can be used individually or to give another person a reading.4

Oracle cards are different from tarot cards in that they do not follow the traditional suits. Tarot

cards, much like a normal deck of cards, have different suits and corresponding numbers. This
deck of oracle cards does not have any suits or numbers and every card is unique in that each

card in the Earth Magic Oracle deck depicts a different picture. Tarot cards often have a

connotation to the future, while oracle cards are more for finding answers and meaning.5

About the Deck

This deck comes equipped with 48 unique cards and a booklet on interpreting the cards, all held

inside the box it comes in. Each card has a unique design and each design was made by a

different artist. Each artist is listed in the back of the booklet. 6The cards were published by Hay

House Inc. The cover art design for the box and booklet was done by Amy Rose Grigoriou and

the cover art was done by Helena Nelson-Reed.7 The box and the booklet have the exact same

design. The booklet in the box gives instructions on how to use the cards, where to store them,

and the meaning of each individual card in the deck. According to the booklet, the cards should

be stored in a special place or wooden box, so as not to get damaged.

About the Author

Steven D. Farmer is a world renowned author, Soul Healer, shamanic practitioner, and spiritual

teacher. 8 He is also a licensed psychotherapist.9 He often conducts training and workshops on

all of the topics listed above. He made this deck of cards to go along with his book Earth

Magic.10 Some of his other works include: Animal Spirit Guides, the Power Animal Oracle

Cards, Power Animals, Sacred Ceremony, and the guided meditation CD Messages from Your

Animal Spirit Guides.11

How to Use the Deck

Start by first shuffling the cards while thinking of a question. If no question comes to mind,

simply ask the cards if there is a message that needs to be conveyed through the use of the

cards.12

There are five different layouts to choose from when you do a reading with these cards.

1. Contemplation: A single card spread used for a quick reading about an issue or as a daily

meditation. For this layout, you would only draw one card. 13
2. Landscape: A three card spread that offers a broader picture of the critical factors

involved in response to your question.14

3. Timeline: A three card spread that gives you an idea about what has influenced the

present situation and its possible outcomes. Each card in this layout represents a different

time. The first card is the past, the second is the present, and the third represents the

future. 15
4. Relationship: A four card spread that shows you how you are relating to others, such as

your boss, employee, friend, lover, or relative. Each card in this layout represents

something different. The first card represents your contribution to the relationship, the

second is the other person and their contribution to the relationship, the third is they way

that these energies come together, and the fourth is insight and understanding. 16
5. The Cross: A five card layout used for guidance on a specific issue. Each card represents

something different. Card #1 is the issue, #2 is subconscious influence that you are

unaware of, #3 is external influence you are aware of, #4 is what is required for

resolution, and #5 is the resolution. 17

Before interpreting the cards with the booklet, one has to get a personal interpretation of the

cards drawn. This is done by studying the cards and finding a personal meaning (what the
card means to an individual without knowing the literal meaning) within the cards that have

been drawn. After that, the booklet is used to find the literal meaning of the cards. A

conclusion can then be drawn as to what the layout means as a whole once each individual

meaning is found.

About the Cards Themselves

An example what a card from this deck looks like.

Each card in this deck is different from the next. At the top of every card is the name of an

Earth element with its theme written directly below. The image and the theme provides

inspiration as to the message of the card. 18

Here are a couple examples of the card meanings taken directly from the guidebook:

1. Lotus Flower (Unfoldment):

The lotus flower sits upon one of its leaves, having risen to the surface as the sun held

in the hand of Godinvites it upward to the light. This unique plant is rooted in the mud

and muck at the bottom of a body of water, its stem reaching up to the surface, where the

leaves rest quietly. At night, the flower closes and sinks below the surface, only to rise

with the daylight and once again gradually unfold its petals, its stem extending about the

waterline three feet or so.

What we learn from this amazing plant is how our own spiritual path unfolds and

opens to the light, then at times gently folds in on itself for a proper rest when the

daylight fades. This period is just as necessary as the growth, for it allows the plant to

integrate what it has gained in nourishment during the day. Its also just as important that

it is rooted, and it is yet another miracle of Nature that something so exquisitely beautiful

is formed from the mud and silt at the waters bottom. (Farmer, pg. 92-93)19

This passage explains the picture on the card and the general meaning of the card. The

guidebook gives in depth descriptions of both the picture on the card and the spiritual

meaning of the card. Here is the spiritual meaning of the card:

Your spiritual unfoldment is occurring at all times whether or not you are aware of it. It

is inevitable as long as you put your trust in the hands of the Creator, the One who holds

the Light. Like the lotus, your soul is always reaching for the light to fulfill its karmic
destiny, but even in that process there are periods of darkness and times to rest. It is a

natural cycle, one that cannot truly be coerced or halted. It has an innate rhythm of its

own, one that is unique to the Being that is you.

You do not need to strive or be driven by spiritual ambition. It does no good to try

to force growth upon yourselfor others, for that matter. Allowing is the key here. Allow

the place in you that naturally wants to follow the light to do so while recognizing that

even when you have complete faith, you will face challenges and, occasionally, suffering.

Your steady faith and love will guide you on your journey of returning to the light.

(Farmer, pg. 93-94)20

The Lotus card talked about above.

2. Dragonfly (Emergence):
In the stages of the life cycle of a dragonfly, once the egg is laid upon a floating plant or

dropped into the water, it gestates, hatches, and may remain for up to four years in this

larval form called a nymph. This is a precursor to the dragonfly. (Dragonflies skip the

cocoon stage, moving from egg directly to nymph.) At some point, the nymph climbs

onto a rock or leaf and there emerges from its former body and takes on the shape and

character of the adult dragonfly. This radiant being then proceeds to illuminate our eyes
and hearts as we witness its dramatic colors and magical dance along the surface of the

water.
In this card, we see a Nature goddess, like the dragonfly, emerging from the water,

her hair braided with vines dotted with flowers. She is surrounded by dragonflies and is

one with the vibrant plant life thriving in the pond. The goddess emerges from her

gestation in the water transformed, with a renewed sense of power and purpose.

(Farmer, pg. 50-51)21

The spiritual meaning of the card:

You are in an intense process of emergence into the next cycle of your life. Unlike more

gradual shifts in awareness you have experienced, this one is happening quite rapidly and came

on somewhat unexpectedly, without any pauses for contemplation or indecision. You may even

think that you are unprepared for such dramatic changed in your life, yet you are prepared and

can put to use the experiences and wisdom you have accumulated up to now.

Life is demanding that you move into the next stage of maturity. This requires you to

adjust your thinking about yourself, others, and your community. It calls for you to shed yet

another layer of your ego-filled defenses and let go of any illusions of being less than who you

are.

This period of emergence is one of broadened consciousness and heightened perceptual

capacities; and since it is inevitable, it is best to surrender to the flow and allow yourself to

gracefully move into the next cycle of your life. (Farmer, pg. 51-52)22
