VCE Unit 2 Outcomes and Assessment Tasks Reminder: ‘The Vietorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority requires all LOTE, assessment tasks to be done under supervision. If you are attending school, the VSL Distance Education Section will send assessment material to your home school and you will do the Assessment Tasks there at the scheduled times. These dates will be varied only if there is a valid reason such as illness or if you transfer from another school during the Unit! Ifyou are not attending school, you will need to make special arrangements for assessment with your VCE Indonesian teacher and the VSL Distance Education Section VCE Coordinator. You will find more information about VCE assessment in the VCE Student Handbook published by the VSL and available at www.languages.vic.edu.au, Unit 2 Outcomes and Assessment Tasks Outcome 2 * The first Assessment Task for Outcome 2 involves listening to Indonesian spoken texts to obtain information and reorganising information and ideas in a different text type in Indonesian (for example, you might listen to an interview and then summarise the points made by various speakers for and against a proposition). You will do this task at your home school, under supervision, in the week scheduled for Workset 10. * The second Assessment Task for Outcome 2 involves reading texts written in Indonesian to obtain information and reorganising information and ideas in a different text type in Indonesian (for example, you might use the information from an article as the basis for a promotional brochure). You will do this task at your home school, under supervision, in the week scheduled for Workset 12. Outcome 3 ‘The Assessment Task for Outcome 3 involves personal writing. You will write either a journal entry or a short story in Indonesian. You will do this task at your home school, under supervision, in the week scheduled for Workset 14, You will practise the skills needed to successfully complete these Assessment Tasks throughout Unit 2. Introduetion VCE Indonesian (Second Language) Unit 2 0.2 Frequently Asked Questions about Assessment Tasks ‘2 How will my home school know when to supervise the Assessment Tasks? The Victorian School of Languages will send the instructions and all the necessary material to your Principal well in advance of the scheduled date. What happens if | can’t do an Assessment Task at the scheduled date? Ifyou have a valid reason for being unable to do the task at the scheduled time, e.g. illness or an unavoidable absence from school, we shall arrange a time with your school at which you can do another version of the task. This second version will be of an equivalent standard to the first task, but of course it will not be exactly the same! P Can I repeat an Assessment Task if the first version isn’t successful? Yes! If you request permission to repeat the Assessment Task, we will make the necessary arrangements with your home school for you to do another version of the task, so that you can try to achieve the Outcome successfully. This second version will be of an equivalent standard to the first task, but of course it will not be exactly the same! VSL policy requires you to submit work regularly, i.e, one Workset every week. KALIMANTAN Kalimantan is the world’s third-biggest island (after Greenland and New Guinea) but not all of it is Indonesian territory. About one-third of it along the northem coast is part of Malaysia. The island is also still known in some places as Borneo, a name derived from Brunei, a harbour (and now an oil-rich, independent Sultanate) on the north coast, independence from the Dutch at the end of World War II, the new government gave the territory its new name, Kalimantan, which means “rivers of precious stones”. This is an appropriate name as many parts of the island have deposits of diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, agates, amethysts and gold. There are also plenty of rivers. The land is low-lying and covered with swamps or dense jungles so the rivers are almost the only ways of gaining access to the hinterland. Sea-going ships can travel up the large rivers such as the Barito and Kapuas and a host of smaller craft ranging from ferries through longboats to small canoes can be seen travelling up and down these “highways” of Kalimantan. Although Kalimantan makes up more than a quarter of the total land area of Indonesia, its eight million inhabitants only constitute about four per cent of the nation’s population, However, Kalimantan is rich in oil and timber, and huge amounts of these produets are exported from the ports in East Kalimantan. The Dayaks live mainly inland, in villages along the banks of the major rivers. Traditionally all the people of a village would live in a very large long house but in recent times some families are moving into. single family accommodation. The old customs of hunting with blow pipes, tattooing their bodies and stretching their pierced earlobes with heavy weights are fading. ‘The even older tradition of head-hunting has died out. Following several days of terrible bombardment from Allied ships and planes, the Australians went ashore to reclaim these oil-rich territories. Evidence has been found of the presence of Buginese fisherman in the Gulf of Carpentaria ‘over 400 years ago. They came to Norther Australia to fish for tripang (also known as béche-de-mer and sea slug) which found a ready market in Asia. To this day some of their language survives in the language of Aboriginal tribes in the Gulf. The Torajan people live in the central highlands and are farming people who grow their rice in “dry” rice fields (Iadang). Although most of them are Christians, many of the Torajan people still involve themselves in activities and ceremonies based on beliefs in spirits. This is most dramatically seen in their funeral which in terms of careful preparation and expense parallel funcrals in Bali. The remains of the dead are not, however, cremated but buried in openings dug into cliff faces. Outside the burial place a wooden effigy of the dead person is often positioned. The funeral of a wealthy person could be described as a festival as celebrations and feasting may continue for over a week and hundreds of buffalo and pigs could be slaughtered to feed the hundreds of guests. By the tenth century, Erlangga, son of a Javanese raja (prince) and a princess of Bali ruled over eastem Java. Toward the end of the fifteenth century, the great Hindu-Javanese kingdom of Majapahit fell before the Islamic coastal states. its rulers retreated to Bali. A Javanese king became master of the island. For four hundred years the culture of Majapahit developed undisturbed. Peace fostered a civilisation at once simple in its basic concepts and tremendously complex in its art and religious ritual. ‘The Javanese princes tried to destroy the village communities which were the basis of Balinese society. But the Balinese resisted fiercely and in most cases were successful. The Balinese have always been small farmers working their own lands. The rajas and their courts contributed to the spectacle of Balinese life. They patronised the arts. They subsidised orchestras, dance societies, painters, carvers, and weavers.
