(a) A central power plant, rated at 800000 KW, generates steam at 585K and discards 05 heat to river at 295 K. If the thermal efficiency of the plant is 70 % of the maximum. possible value, how much heat is discarded to the river at rated power. (b) One mole of an ideal gas, Cp= (7/2) R and Cv= (5/2) R, is compressed 05 adiabatically in a piston/cylinder device from 2 bar and 25 °C to 7 bar. The process is, irreversible and requires 35 % more work than a reversible, adiabatic compression from the same initial state to the same final pressure. What is the entropy change of the gas. R-8.314 mo/K (a) A 15 m’ tank contains 500 kg of liquid water in equilibrium with pure water 10 vapour, which fills the remainder of the tank. The temperature and pressure are 100 °C and 101.33 kPa, From a water line at a constant temperature of 70°C and a constant pressure somewhat above 101.33 kPa, 750 kg of liquid is bled into the tank. If the temperature and pressure in the tank are not to change as a result of the process, how much energy as heat must be transferred to the tank. (b) Steam generated in a power plant at a pressure of 8600 kPa and a temperature of 15 500°C is fed to a turbine, Exhaust from the turbine enters a condenser at 10 kPa, ‘where it is condensed to saturated liquid, which is then pumped to the boiler. (i) What is the thermal efficiency of a Rankine eycle operating at these conditions. (ii) What is the thermal efficiency of a practical cycle operating at these conditions if the turbine efficiency and pump efficiency are both 0.75. (ii) Ifthe rating of the power cycle of part (b) is 80000 kW, What is the steam rate and ‘what are the heat transfer rates in the boiler and condenser.
