Teachers Introduction
Why there is a need for this book
Some parents/carers find talking to their children about topics such as keeping safe,
friendship issues and sex, very easy. Others find it extremely awkward. Most parents/
carers, however, fall somewhere between the two. This book aims to make such
discussions easy to broach and could potentially provide openings for lengthy
discussions between parents/carers and their children.

Purpose of the book

The purpose of the activities in this book is to prompt discussions between parents/
carers and their children. The topics of conversation are the kind that you would find in
the P.S.H.E part of the schools curriculum and they would therefore compliment this
programme. The purpose is achieved by setting an activity as homework and this
hopefully encourages parents/carers to make the time to sit down and discuss the
issues covered in this book issues that many children would rather talk about with
their parents than anyone else.

Format of the Book

The book is split into four sections with activities for:
Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)
Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4)
Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6)
Year 7
Format of activities
All the activities are set out on one photocopiable A4 sheet. Some activities invite
children to write or draw directly onto the sheet but the onus of each activity is not
about what is actually produced on paper, but on the (valuable) discussion that
surrounds the activity. At the bottom of each sheet is a place where children can ask
the adult, that discussed the issue with them, to sign it. There is also the Two Way Talk
Logo which hopefully parents will grow to associate with the discussion Two Way
Talk activities and know automatically what the point of the homework is.

When and how to set activities

A covering letter, explaining the point of these activities is provided in this book. This
would ideally be sent to parents before any of the homework is set. In this letter it
makes it clear to parents/carers that the school is not, in any way, prying into their home
lives. The letter also introduces parents/carers to the Two Way Talk logo.

Individual teachers or schools can decide when they want to set the homework, which
might be done as one a week for a few weeks, one every now and then or a couple
each term.

Norfolk DAAT, 2006

1
Dear Parent/Carer,

This is to explain the purpose of the Two Way Talk homework activities that your
child will be bringing home over the next few weeks.

The homework is for you and your child to do together. The homework activities aim to
start a conversation between you and your child. It does not intend to be intrusive or
investigate any aspects of your childs life! The box below appears on each sheet and is
for the teacher to know that your child has talked to you but not to have all the details of
your discussion.

I talked about this with

None of the homework requires correct answers, as indeed, there are no correct
answers! The activities are all about sharing and discussing ideas and opinions none
of which can be incorrect!

The topics covered fall generally into the Personal, Social and Health Education part of
the school curriculum, but you may find that it covers topics that you would discuss with
your child anyway. Hopefully Two Way Talk homework will therefore act as an easy
prompt for such discussions.

Dressing Up
Lee and Myna loved dressing up. Mum gave them a big
bag of clothes. Lee put on blue shoes, a furry coat and a
gold crown.
Look at me, I am a king, he said. Myna had white
shoes with high heels.
Im nearly as tall as you, she said to her mum.
You look lovely, said Mum.
Go and look in the mirror.
Myna and Lee went upstairs to mums bedroom.
They looked in the mirror and they laughed.
We look silly, they said.

On the table next to the bed were lots of things. A brush,

a book and some shiny red pills in a bottle.
Oh great, I love sweets, said Lee.
Myna watched as Lee picked up the bottle.

What should Myna do?

Jo was excited; she was going to the park with

soon as they arrived, Fatima spotted her
friends who were hanging around the swings.
They are too big for the swings, thought Jo,
frowning.
Come and play football grumpy, shouted
Jamal as he dribbled the ball towards the goal.

Wait for me, said Jo running as fast as she could to catch

him up.
I want to be in goal, said Jamal
OK said Jo, Ill be David Beckham and score the goals.
No chance! said Jamal. Youll never get the ball past me,
Jo began to take the long run up when she noticed a
broken bottle lying in the grass near the penalty spot.
Come on, slow coach! What are you waiting for?

Prince Anir
Once upon a time there lived a prince who had everything
anyone could possibly want; that is anything that could be
bought with money. He lived in a big castle, drove a fast
car, had a ton of toys, televisions and computers and he
slept in a beautifully designed bedroom with matching
duvet cover, carpet and curtains. He also had servants
that did all the boring, messy and nasty jobs for him.
However, despite all these things, Anir was not a happy person. He was also not a very kind
person. He often threw his things across the room in a fit of rage, shouted at the servants
and insisted that he only do exactly what he wanted to do at all times. He also claimed that
he was always bored. Nothing and nobody interested him.
One day, Anir was lying on his bed pulling the legs off ladybirds, when a strange noise
startled him. It appeared to be coming from outside, so he rushed across to the window. Just
as he reached the edge of his designer curtains, a bright flash of white and silver light filled
the room. As Anir stood with his mouth wide open, seven elves appeared in front of him
one for each colour of the rainbow.
Hello Anir, Do-Good-and-Right-Rainbow-Elves at your service. Weve come to sort you out
young man, said the orange elf with a look of determination on its face. Anir stood with his
mouth still wide open.
We can each give you a gift just one each, but you have to decide what you want. We
would suggest that you put some thought into it as some of these gifts will last you for life,
explained the green elf with a kindly smile on its face.
Anir looked puzzled, but for the first time in his life, he did as he was told. He sat down to
decide on the seven gifts that he wanted. Can you help him to make a good decision?

Which seven things do you think Anir should choose from the following things?:

Just Another Bank Holiday Monday?
Local people were out enjoying the sunshine on Bank Holiday Monday. The
fair was in town and everyone wanted to have fun.
This is what they said later..

I take my children to the fair every year, said Jon Miller (32) They really enjoy it but
this year we left early. There were fights and youths staggering around shouting rude
words. I dont want my children seeing things like that.

I was really upset, said Danilo Barros (6) A boy grabbed the goldfish I won and
tipped it onto the grass His mother Ana Barros (28) was also upset about the loss of
the goldfish. Danilo cried so much I had to buy him a new one. I would like to have told
the drunk what I thought of him but he was slurring his words and I thought he might hit
me.

It was a real laugh I had a few beers and felt really happy. Everybody was singing.
We had a great time! Lee (14)

It was a bunch of kids who cant hold their drink, said Liam (25) and his girl friend Lucy
(22). I thought it was funny, but I can see how some people might be scared There
was rubbish everywhere, drinks cans, broken glass and puke! said Lucy. It wasnt
very nice and I got vomit on my new shoes!

I had some cider which tasted so good. It made me feel really confident. In fact I asked
Jason out and he said Yes! I felt on top of the world. Later on I was a bit sick. I hope
Jason didnt see me. Lianne (13)

Maurice Dunn, the chairman of the Bank Holiday celebrations committee said that he
had tried to contact the police, but they were very busy and so hadnt arrived until later.
I want to know how they got this alcohol, he said. They were all under age.
Where were their parents? Thats what I want to know!

Joe and I managed to get in a bit of an argument. I cant even

remember what it was all about now. Joe kept baiting me and I
snapped. It was a shame as I was having a great time up to
then. I had a few beers but so what I can take my drink.
Tom (15)

Class 7J
Name: Liam
Age: 12
Favourite food: Pizza
Hobbies: Football

Liam always has lots of energy and is one of the lads in 7J. Most of the other children
in the class think he is a real laugh and wish they were like him. The rest of the class
are a bit scared of him. He says he generally finds school boring but he likes games
and is very competitive. He enjoys playing football at break time with his mates. If
arguments erupt at lunch-time Liam is usually involved or not far away. He likes to be
noticed! If 7J have a supply teacher within a short while they will certainly know Liam.
Liam is often getting in trouble but feels that he is treated unfairly.

Some of Liams friends have started smoking down the park after school. Liam is not
sure what to do as his granny died a year ago of lung cancer. Liam used to spend a lot
of time with his granny and really misses her. Before she died, Liams granny used to
talk about the fact that she wished she had never started smoking.

Liam still feels really sad about his granny and knows first hand the effects of smoking.
At the moment he tells his friends that he doesnt want to smoke. However some of the
group have started to make comments and whisper about him. He feels that his
position as leader of the group may be in question because he is choosing not to
smoke.

What do you think he will do?

Name: Sabir
Age: 12
Favourite food: Pizza
Hobbies: Reading and Computer games

Sabir always works hard at school and achieves good results. Some of the other pupils
in the class call him a swot and take the mickey out of him as he always has his head
in a book. At parents evening the teachers always say how good Sabir is and how he
will do well in the future. Sabir is quiet and although he has two good friends in year 6
he often spends a lot of time on his own, playing games on his computer.

On the way home from school Sabir passes through the park he notices Liam and his
mates hanging around the bandstand. He notices they are smoking. He tries to rush
past quickly before they start calling him names. To his surprise they call him over and
start chatting to him like he was one of the gang. He starts to relax and think that
maybe they arent that bad after all. One of the boys offers him a cigarette. Sabirs dad
used to smoke and is now very anti-smoking. Sabir knows the facts about nicotine and
tobacco. However he is getting on so well with Liams gang he feels that it would be
rude to refuse their offer.

Natalies Diary
Monday
I am SO EXCITED! Ginas brother Karl is 16 this week and he is having a
party. But the big news is. that Gina and I are invited!!!! It will be
so amazing! Even though Gina and I are only in year 7, Karl said that
we could come if we promised not to show him up in front of his friends.
I need to check with mum to see if I can go. I hope she will let me. Keep
your fingers crossed!
Tuesday
Gloomy Tuesday.mum is thinking about the party. I bet she doesnt let
me go. I hate her. She never lets me do what I want to do. If she doesnt
let me go Ill never speak to her again.
Wednesday
Amazing!!! She is going to let me go after all. She had a big chat with
dad and they agreed as the party was going to be held at Ginas house
they thought it would be alright. They think that Ginas mum is going to
be there to supervise. Ha ha!!! As if Karl and his friends would put up
with that! Gina and Karls mum are actually going out for the evening.
I havent actually told my mum and dad a lie because they have just
assumed that the party will be supervised
Thursday
I have spent all day thinking about what to wear at the party tomorrow
night. I have asked mum if we could go into town after school so I
could buy something new but she said that she was much too busy and
anyway she couldnt afford it She is so mean! She doesnt realise that I
have to look my best in front of Karl and his friends.
Friday
Today is the day.. I feel sick and excited all at the same
time.. it is going to be soooooo exciting. Wish me luck!!!!!
Saturday
Feel terrible today I think I must have a hangover I remember
dashing outside and throwing up in the flower bed outside the front
door. My head is thumping and I still feel a bit sick. I cant remember a
lot about the party except that I had a snog with that spotty boy in year

The Party
Leon is 14 and attends the local high school. He recently joined
Westfield High when his family moved into the area from
Tootington. He is enjoying school but as yet hasnt really found
any good friends to hang out with. What he is enjoying is the
fact that he can recreate a whole new personality for himself at
his new school. At his old school he felt he was too sensible
and could even be considered boring.

However he is getting tired of hanging out on his own, so when

Felipe and Aaron in his class say they are going to a party, he
jumps at the chance. Leons mum suggests that he stays at
Aarons house that night so she wont have to drive a long way and pick him up. The
three boys set off to the party, chatting about who will be there. Leon feels really excited
at the thought of getting to know lots of new people. The walk to the party takes about
twenty minutes, through lots of back streets and when they arrive at the house, Leon
realises he is completely lost. However, with Aaron and Felipe to take him home, he
doesnt think its a problem.

The party is in full swing when they arrive but Leon soon loses Aaron and Felipe. He
helps himself to a drink and wanders around looking for a familiar face. He realises that
he doesnt know anyone.

Leon sits in a corner and wishes he was at home with

his family. He notices that lots of the people from the
party seem to be crowding into another room and then
shutting the door behind them. He becomes curious
and as he opens the door a strange smell greets him.
As his eyes become accustomed to the darkness he
sees people lying on cushions on the floor and they are
passing around something that looks like a home made
cigarette. He realises that they are smoking cannabis
and decides to leave the room, when he hears Aaron
calling his name. Aaron suggests that he sits down and
joins in All eyes seem to be on him..

How is he feeling?
What could help him deal with this situation?
What information would help him to decide what to do?
What will he do?
