How the Carolina Panthers

can beat the Denver Broncos

T
he Carolina Panthers have spent
much of the year exceeding expecta-
tions. Early in the season, when there
was a group of undefeated teams, the
Panthers were tagged with the worst unbeat-
en team in the league label.
At some point, that label became more of
a wry joke. The Panthers were sarcastically
dubbed the worst 14-0 team in history as
the team earned the respect of the league on
its way to 15-1.
Now, the Panthers are prohibitive, 5.5-point
favorites in the Super Bowl against the Denver
Broncos. Theyre favored by more in the Su-
per Bowl than they were in either NFC playoff
game clearly, the Panthers are a long way
from the team that couldnt earn any respect

look at how they can finish the job.

I
ts perhaps the only Super Bowl where the game
wasnt the biggest story.
When the New England Patriots Adam Vinatieri
booted a 41-yard field goal on the last play of a
32-29 victory over Carolina, it ended the Panthers first
trip to the NFLs biggest stage in disappointment.
It also came a couple of hours after
what most people were discussing at
the water cooler the following day:
Did you see the halftime show?
To put this in context, I was there and
I didnt see it.
As part of The Gazettes five-person staff
covering the game, I was in auxiliary seats
in Houstons Reliant Stadium on the side
RICHARD opposite the MTV-produced halftime show.
Jessica Simpson, P. Diddy, Nelly and
WALKER Kid Rock all were there, in addition to
the marching bands of the University of
Sports
Houston and Texas Southern University.
reporter But the real story came when Justin Tim-
berlake pulled off a part of Janet Jacksons
costume while the two performed Rock Your Body.
Little was made of the situation in the actual stadium, Associated Press
and when play resumed, I was surprised to see reports on Performers Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson are seen during their halftime
performance prior to the infamous wardrobe malfunction at Super Bowl XXXVIII

All season, despite some new residents moving in and a couple light-
hearted disputes over property lines, the defensive backs residing in the
Thieverhood section of the Carolina Panthers locker room has been at
the heart of the teams success.
Above the defensive backs lockers this year, the Panthers have a sign
reading Thieves Ave. Its not the name of the group. Its just the street
where the thieves of the secondary reside.
Safety Kurt Coleman, the primary Panthers thief this season with seven
regular-season interceptions and two more in the postseason, said the
name started early in the season when defensive line coach Eric Wash-
ington first used the term thieves.
We wanted to embrace that. So, for the first few weeks, it was almost
just talk. We want to be thieves, but now, its what we believe. Its who
we are as a group, as a collective unit, but it doesnt just start in the back
end, Coleman said. Its because of our front seven that have been get-
ting tremendous pressure all year.
Normans residence on Thieves Ave. is usually the busiest, as the cor-
nerback hosts what neighbor Teddy Williams called his entourage after
practice by holding court with the media.
You know Josh keeps a lot of stuff on my property. I tell him, Weve
got a property line Josh. Keep the property clean or we will evict you,
Williams laughed.
While the thieves nickname is mostly an example of the Panthers
finding another way to have fun, thievery may become a major key
against the Denver Broncos. Carolina led the league in takeaways and
turnover differential during the regular season, picking off a league-lead-
ing 24 passes.
In the playoffs, the thieves found two new victims in Seattles Russell
Wilson and Arizonas Carson Palmer. Theyve forced nine turnovers in
the playoffs, including picking off Palmer four times, while giving the ball
up just once in two games.
Now, the thieverhood has moved west, and the Thieves Ave. sign has
come with the Panthers.
Darn right, we brought it. Its sitting right there up outside our lockers.
We have a group on the side where its just our alley, our avenue, Nor-
man said. John Clark/The Gazette
