As the Carolina Panthers prepare for Super
Bowl 50 with the soon-to-be NFL Most Valu-
able Player Cam Newton as their quarterback,
they can look no further than the 2011 offsea-
son for why theyre here.
The Panthers were coming off a miserable
2-14 season in John Foxs last year as coach
and had more questions than answers at vir-
tually every position on the roster.
Once owner Jerry Richardson and then-gen-
eral manager Marty Hurney hired Ron Rivera
as head coach, they moved on to the next
huge decision: Who to take with the No. 1 pick
in a 2011 NFL Draft.
They could have chosen the playmaking
linebacker they will see in the Super Bowl,
Texas A&Ms Von Miller, whom the Denver
Broncos chose No. 2 overall.
They could have chosen a pass-rushing,
run-stopping defensive lineman like Ala-
bamas Marcell Dareus, whom the Buffalo
Bills chose No. 3 overall.
They could have picked a shut-down cor-
nerback who also had shown extraordinary
special teams skills in LSUs Patrick Peterson,
whom the Arizona Cardinals chose No. 5
overall.
Or, they could have picked a standout wide
receiver like Georgias A.J. Green or Alabamas
Julio Jones the No. 4 and No. 6 picks who
went, respectively, to the Cincinnati Bengals
and Atlanta Falcons.
Instead, Rivera and Hurney remember the
goal was simple: Draft a franchise quarterback.
Well, we had to, Rivera said. One of the
first things I talked about was identifying who
that franchise quarterback was going to be.
Whether that quarterback was on our roster or
find that guy.
Jimmy Clausen, a second-round pick in the
2010 Draft by the Panthers, was the only can-
didate on the roster at that time.
And of the free agent quarterbacks available
that offseason, only 2005 No. 1 overall pick
Alex Smith appeared to be a possibility to fit
Carolinas needs. The other available quar-
terbacks were either aging (Brett Favre, Matt
Hasselbeck, Marc Bulger), career backups
(Tyler Thigpen) or were unproven (Matt Lein-
art, Tarvaris Jackson).
Thats a position that you investigate thor-
oughly, said Hurney, now owner and radio
co-host of the ESPN 730-AM radio station,
which has offices one block from Bank of
America Stadium in Charlotte. And the No. 1
pressure is to hit on it and have it be the right
guy. When youre looking at a franchise quar-
terback, theres more questions than for any
other player.
Rivera and Hurney both said they spent
countless hours scouting Newton from his
time at Atlantas Westlake High, his two years
at the University of Florida, his one season
at Blinn Junior College in Texas and his one
season as a national championship- and

How the Carolina Panthers

he Carolina Panthers have spent
much of the year exceeding expecta-
tions. Early in the season, when there
was a group of undefeated teams, the
Panthers were tagged with the worst unbeat-
en team in the league label.
At some point, that label became more of
a wry joke. The Panthers were sarcastically
dubbed the worst 14-0 team in history as
the team earned the respect of the league on
its way to 15-1.
Now, the Panthers are prohibitive, 5.5-point
favorites in the Super Bowl against the Denver
Broncos. Theyre favored by more in the Su-
per Bowl than they were in either NFC playoff
game clearly, the Panthers are a long way
from the team that couldnt earn any respect
in the first two months of the season. Lets

hen Cam Newton was
asked to reflect on his car
accident one year after
the event, the Carolina
Panthers quarterback gave a thoughtful,
detailed answer it was clearly a ques-
tion he had thought about often.
If Im not, in my position, using
my influence in a positive way, then
shame on me, Newton said.
In a way, the answer addressed one
of the most common criticisms lobbed
Newtons way: That the big smile,
dances and footballs given away to kids
at Bank of America Stadium are all a
front that Newton is insincere.
But every quarterback puts up that same
wall of protection. The position is so heavily
scrutinized, so important to the success of
a team, that most Aaron Rodgers, Tom
Brady, Peyton Manning all politely answer
questions from the media while giving abso-
lutely nothing of value or interest away. They
stay walled off at all times, showing glimpses
of emotion on the field that are the most gen-
uine moments fans will ever see from them.
Yet, those quarterbacks dont draw the
same level of criticism
for being insincere or for
celebrating too excessively
on the field. On Jan. 27,
Newton was perfectly
happy to respond directly
to a question about why

All season, despite some new residents moving in and a couple light-
hearted disputes over property lines, the defensive backs residing in the
Thieverhood section of the Carolina Panthers locker room has been at
the heart of the teams success.
Above the defensive backs lockers this year, the Panthers have a sign
reading Thieves Ave. Its not the name of the group. Its just the street
where the thieves of the secondary reside.
Safety Kurt Coleman, the primary Panthers thief this season with seven
regular-season interceptions and two more in the postseason, said the
name started early in the season when defensive line coach Eric Wash-
ington first used the term thieves.
We wanted to embrace that. So, for the first few weeks, it was almost
just talk. We want to be thieves, but now, its what we believe. Its who
we are as a group, as a collective unit, but it doesnt just start in the back
end, Coleman said. Its because of our front seven that have been get-
ting tremendous pressure all year.
Normans residence on Thieves Ave. is usually the busiest, as the cor-
nerback hosts what neighbor Teddy Williams called his entourage after
practice by holding court with the media.

While the thieves nickname is mostly an example of the Panthers
