going on a trip.
Students will determine who Native Americans are and how they traveled to
North America hundreds of years ago.

3. Materials:
10 things worksheet
Easel
Whiteboard
Powerpoint

4. Procedures:

Introduction:
Students will begin by sitting at their desks and being asked to make a list of 10
things they would want to bring if they were told that they were leaving New
Jersey tomorrow and not coming back. Students will be able to collaborate ideas
with their table.
Students will be given about 5 minutes to complete this task.

Body:
Students will come down to the carpet with their list and share some of their
ideas. Teacher will write these ideas on the easel as students share. Next, teacher
will cross off all electronics off of the easel so that what remains is only basic
things such as clothes, shoes, food, mementos, etc.
Teacher will then ask students how they plan to travel. Teacher will then cross off
all forms of transportation besides walking.
Teacher will have students think how people traveled before cars, planes, trains,
buses. Teacher will prompt students to think about walking everywhere you go.
If there is time, have students walk around the classroom to show moving
from one place to another.

Closing:
Teacher will show students a powerpoint introducing Native Americans. Two
essential questions that will be answered on the powerpoint include: who are
native americans and how they did get here?
Teacher will explain that native americans are people who traveled here
from other parts of the world and are believed to be some of the first
humans to settle across North America. Explain that there are hundreds of
tribes or groups of people throughout NA. They traveled here by using a
land bridge that connected Asia and NA.

5. Assessment:
Students will compose a list of items that they would want to bring with them if they are
traveling. Additionally, students will complete an exit slip sometime during the day
where they will be asked who are native americans and how they got to North America.

6. Management Issues, Transitions, and Differentiation:

Students will begin at their desks where they will write a list of 10 things they would not
want to live without. Next, students will come to the carpet and share their ideas and
teacher will write answers down on the easel. Students will then be asked to get up and
walk around the classroom. This will prompt them to share that before transportation
was around, people would walk everywhere. Finally, students will see a powerpoint with
pictures of the land bridge where native americans are believed to have traveled and
where they traveled throughout the continent. Students will complete an exit slip
sometime during the day.
