Continuous Distributions
1. The daily consumption of milk in a town in excess of 2000L is approximately distributed as
an Erlang variate with parameters = 1/1000 and k = 2. The town has a daily stock of 3000L. What is the probability that the stock is insufficient on a particular day? 2. Suppose that the life of a certain type of electron tube has an exponential distribution with a mean life of 500 hours. Find the probability that it will last for another 600 hours if the tube has been in operation for 300 hours. 3. Prove the reproductive property of Gamma Distribution. 4. Suppose that X has an exponential distribution with parameter . Compute the probability that X exceeds twice its expected value. 5. If the service life, in hours, of a semiconductor is a RV having a Weibull distribution with the parameters = 0.0375 and = 0.55, (i) How long can such a semiconductor be expected to last? (ii) What is the probability that such a semiconductor will still be in operating condition after 4000h? 6. According to the records of an electric company serving the NCR area, the mean electric consumption for all households during winter is 1650 kilowatts per month. Assume that the monthly electric consumptions during winter by all households in this area have a normal distribution with a mean of 1650 kilowatt-hours and a standard deviation of 320 kilowatts hours (a) find the probability that the monthly electric consumption during winter by a randomly selected household from this area is less than 1850 kilowatts-hour (b) what the percentage of the households in this area have a monthly electric consumption of 900 to 1340 kilowatts-hour? 7. Five resistances Ri (i = 1; 2; 3; 4; 5) are put into a series arrangement in a circuit. Suppose that each resistance is normally distributed with mean 10 and variance 0.16. Find the probability that the resistance of the circuit exceeds 40 ohms. 8. A retailer sells a perishable commodity and each day he places an order for Q units. Each unit that is sold gives a profit of 60 cents and units not sold at the end of the day are discarded at a loss of 40 cents per unit. The demand, D, on any given day is uniformly distributed over [80,140]. How many units should the retailer order to maximize expected profit? 9. The marks obtained by 1000 students of a B. Tech. class in a Mathematical course are found to be normally distributed with mean 78 % and standard deviation 11 %.
(a) If A grade is awarded to the students securing at least 90 % marks, find how many
students obtained A grade. (b) If B grade is awarded for the marks obtained between 65 % to 75%, find the percentage of students getting B grade. 10. Prove that the mean, median and mode of a normal variate are equal.
