Directions: In groups 1-2 two create a Cold War Events timeline.
Find the year for each event (use start dates for multiple-year
events)
Move slides so that events are in chronological order (based on
start date, or first date) - Hint: Iron Curtain Speech is first
Write a description for each event (quick and to the point, own
words, no copy and pasting)
Find a picture for each event

Slides must be neat (organized, no blurry pictures, etc.)

Iron Curtain Speech (5 March 1946)
It was a speech about a boundary line which divided Europe into two separate places.
Truman Doctrine ( March 12, 1947 July 12, 1948 )
The principle that the US should give support to countries or
peoples threatened by Soviet forces or communist insurrection.
Berlin Airlift (June 24, 1948)
A military operation in the late 1940s that brought food and other
needed goods into West Berlin by air.
NATO (April 4, 1949)
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a military alliance of
European and North American democracies founded after WW2
to strengthen international ties.
USSRs first successful Atomic Bomb (September 3,
1949)

The Soviet Union conducted its first weapon test of an


implosion-type nuclear device
China falls to Communism (October 1, 1949)
DAfter several allies and neighbors of China falls to
communism, theyll also fall
Korean War (June 25, 1950)
A battle between the United Nations, supported by the United
States, and the communist Democratic Peoples Republic of
Korea( North Korea ).
Sputnik (October 4, 1957, 7:28 PM)
Series of Soviet artificial satellites.
Explorer 1 Launched (February 1, 1958)
Description (in own words) First Satellite of the United
States.
NASA is Founded (July 29, 1958)
Description (in own words)The establishment of NASA
was a sign that the United STates was committed to winning the
space race against the Soviets.
U-2 Incident (May 1, 1960)
An American U-2 spy plane is shot down
while conducting espionage over the Soviet
Union.
Bay of Pigs Invasion (april 17,1961 )
An unsuccessful invasion of Cuba by Cuban exiles, supported by
the U.S. government.
Berlin Wall Was Built (August 13, 1961)
Description (in own words) It was built by the government
of what was then East Germany to keep East Berliners from
defects into the West.
Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)
A time of tension between the Soviet Union, the United States
and Cuba during the Cold War.
Vietnam War (Nov.1,1965-1973)
It was a Cold War conflict pitting the U.S. and the remnants of
the French colonial government in South Vietnam.
First Man on the Moon/Apollo 11 (july
16,1969)
Description (in own words) The space vehicle that carried
three American astronauts to the moon and back in July 1969.
Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon.
SALT I Treaty ( May 26, 1972)
The first agreements signed by the United States and the Union of
Soviet Socialist REpublics for uses for nuclear weapons.
USSR Invades Afghanistan (1979)
The Soviet Union conducted its first weapon test of an
implosion-type nuclear device.
US Boycotts Olympics in Moscow (March 21,
1980)

One part of a number of actions initiated by the United States to


protest the Soviet invasion in Afghanistan.
Reagans Tear Down this Wall Speech (June 12,
1987)

Speech made by US President Ronald Reagan in West Berlin for


calling the leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, to
open up the barrier which had divided West and East Berlin since
1961.
Soviet Union Falls (Dec.26 1991)
Description (in own words) A stunning series of events
between 1989 and 1991 that led to the fall of communist regimes
in eastern Europe and the Soviet Union.
