Overview
This supplemental manual provides instructions on the maintenance and health procedures
and the frequency which should be performed on your ARRIS Conditional Access systems.

Product Scope
This manual covers the maintenance procedures for the products listed below.
DAC 6000
The maintenance and health procedures listed in this chapter apply to all current DAC 6000
releases.
RADD 6000 / CASMR Stream Server
The maintenance and health procedures listed in this chapter apply to all Linux releases of
RADD 6000 2.x and CASMR Stream Server.
CASMR-100
The maintenance and health procedures listed in this chapter apply to all CASMR-100
solutions.

Introduction

The Technical Assistance Center (TAC) provides assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To
open a case, use one of these contact methods:

Overview
This chapter provides the procedures for maintaining your DAC 6000 product. The procedures
are provided based on the frequency they should be performed. Performing these steps in the
provided intervals will reduce the likelihood of encountering problems with your Conditional
Access system.

Situational Maintenance and Health Procedures


The following procedures should be performed when the particular situation arises.
Perform the following steps when more than 50,000 set-tops have been added to the
DAC 6000 since the last reboot:
a. Open a terminal window.
b. Type stop_acc and press Enter to stop the DAC application.
c. Type su and press Enter.
d. Enter the superuser password and press Enter.
e. Type init 6 and press Enter to reboot the DAC 6000.

Daily Maintenance and Health Procedures


Replace storage drives for database backups:
Tape Backup
a. Remove and store the previous backup tape.
b. Insert a fresh tape in the DAC 6000 for database backup.
USB Drive
a. Verify your USB drive is not close to becoming full.
b. If necessary, replace USB drive on the DAC 6000 for database backup.

Weekly Maintenance and Health Procedures


Perform the following steps on a weekly basis:
1. Perform the following instructions on each device to check the time sync between the
DAC 6000, each of its associated RADD 6000/CSSs, and any CASMR-100s on the system:
a. Type ntpq and press Enter.

b. Type peers and press Enter.


c. Examine the output.
d. Type date and press Enter.
e. Check the time sync.
2. For a DSG-capable systems, check to see that both DSG CA tunnels are operational.
3. Check the KLS functionality.
a. Physically check the KLSes, make sure there are no process fault alarms.
b. Check the element active state for each KLS in the DAC 6000:
Single KLS2000/3000: 4 active element
Dual KLS2000/3000: 8 active elements
Note: See the KLS operational manual for additional information.
4. If you are running DAC 5.0 or earlier, optimize the DAC 6000 database:
Note: DAC 6000 5.2 and later databases only need to be optimized quarterly due to improved
database maintenance techniques. See Quarterly Maintenance and Health Procedures below.
a. Stop the Business System.
b. Type stop_acc and press Enter.
c. If you are running DAC 6000 4.2 or earlier and have CASMR connected to the system,
perform the following before executing db_maintenance:
1) Log into the CASMR system.
2) Bring up a terminal.
3) Type cd /etc/init.d and press Enter.
4) Type casmr stop and press Enter.
d. Type db_maintenance_script 5 and press Enter.
Note: Script 5 is a level 5 script and is the highest level.
e. Once the db maintenance has completed, type su and press Enter.
f. Enter the superuser password and press Enter.
g. Type init 6 and press Enter to reboot the DAC 6000.
h. Restart the Business System when the DAC is back up.
i. If CASMR was running on the system, perform the following:
1) Log into the CASMR system.
2) Bring up a terminal.
3) Type su and press Enter.
4) Enter the superuser password and press Enter.
5) Type cd /etc/init.d and press Enter.
6) Type casmr status and press Enter.
7) Verify CASMR is running.

Monthly Maintenance and Health Procedures


Perform the following steps once every month:
1. Perform a full system backup of the DAC 6000. The procedure for performing a full system
backup of the DAC 6000 can be found in the in the Related Documents section.
2. Verify that the DAC 6000 isnt using more than 80% of the space in the filesystem:
a. Log into the DAC 6000.
b. Open a terminal window.
c. Type df -h and press Enter.
d. Verify that the file system mounted on / is not using more than 80% of the space.
e. If the DAC 6000 is using more than 80% and assistance removing unneeded files is
needed, contact the ARRIS TAC using the Getting Help section.

Quarterly Maintenance and Health Procedures


If you are running DAC 6000 5.2 or later, the DAC database should be optimized quarterly.
Perform the following steps once every quarter:
Note: DAC 6000 5.0 and earlier databases should be optimized weekly. See Weekly Maintenance
Procedures above.
1. Stop the Business System.
2. Type stop_acc and press Enter.
3. Type sybase_maintenance -d and press Enter.
4. Once the db maintenance has completed, type su and press Enter.
5. Enter the superuser password and press Enter.
6. Type init 6 and press Enter to reboot the DAC 6000.
7. Restart the Business System when the DAC is back up.

Bi-Annual Maintenance and Health Procedures


Twice a year, the configuration of the network interfaces and the ftp communication should be
verified. Perform the following steps every six months:
1. Verify that the DAC 6000 OAM&P and Business System network interfaces are set to Auto-
negotiate ON and are running at 100 or 1000 MB w/ Full Duplex.
a. Type ethtool eth0 and press Enter.
b. Verify that the eth0 network card has the following settings:
Speed: 100 Mb/s or 1000 Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Auto-negotiation: on
c. Type ethtool eth2 and press Enter.

d. Verify that the eth2 network card has the following settings:
o Speed: 100 Mb/s or 1000 Mb/s
Duplex: Full
Auto-negotiation: on
2. Perform an FTP transfer check between the DAC 6000 and RADD 6000 / CSS.
a. From the DAC 6000, type cd /home/acc400d/data and press Enter.
b. Type cp -p dev_log_file.Archive testfile and press Enter.
c. Establish an FTP session to the RADD / CSS.
d. Type put testfile and press Enter.
e. Type get testfile and press Enter.
f. If the time to perform these transfers is greater than 10 seconds, there is a network
performance issue. Contact the ARRIS TAC using the Getting Help section.

Overview
This chapter provides the procedures for maintaining your RADD 6000 / CSS product. The
procedures are provided based on the frequency they should be performed. Performing these
steps in the provided intervals will reduce the likelihood of encountering problems with your
Conditional Access system.

Monthly Maintenance and Health Procedures


Once a month after db maintenance is performed, a reboot of each RADD 6000 (only) is
recommended. Perform the following steps on a monthly basis:
1. Reboot the RADD 6000 (only) on a monthly basis:
a. Log into the RADD 6000.
b. Type stop_radd and press Enter.
c. Type su and press Enter.
d. Type the superuser password and press Enter.
e. Type init 6 and press Enter.
f. From the DAC 6000, type termutil i verify status = connected and
press Enter to ensure that the RADD 6000 has reconnected to the DAC 6000.
2. Perform the following instructions on each RADD 6000/CSS to check the time sync between
it and the DAC 6000 on the system:
a. Type ntpq and press Enter.
b. Type peers and press Enter.
c. Examine the output.
d. Type date and press Enter.
e. Check the time sync.

Quarterly Maintenance and Health Procedures


Once a quarter a reboot of each CSS is recommended. Perform the following steps every
quarter:
1. Type su and press Enter.
2. Type /etc/init.d/dss stop and press Enter.
3. Type init 6 and press Enter. The CSS will reboot.

4. Type su and press Enter.


5. Type /etc/init.d/dss start and press Enter.
6. Type /etc/init.d/dss status and press Enter.
7. Verify that the CSS is running.

Bi-Annual Maintenance and Health Procedures


Perform the following steps every six months:
1. Type ethtool eth0 and press Enter.
2. Verify that the eth0 network card has the following settings:
o Speed: 100 Mb/s or 1000 Mb/s
o Duplex: Full
o Auto-negotiation: on
3. Type ethtool eth1 and press Enter.
4. Verify that the eth1 network card has the following settings:
o Speed: 100 Mb/s or 1000 Mb/s
o Duplex: Full
o Auto-negotiation: on

Overview
This chapter provides the procedures for maintaining your CASMR-100 product. The procedures
are provided based on the frequency they should be performed. Performing these steps in the
provided intervals will reduce the likelihood of encountering problems with your Conditional
Access system.

Daily Maintenance and Health Procedures


Perform a backup of the CASMR application and database. This process can be automated using
a cron job. The procedure for automating the backup of the CASMR application and database
can be found in the CASMR Online Help. CASMR can only store 7 days worth of backups locally.
They will need to be copied weekly to another location.

Weekly Maintenance and Health Procedures


Perform the following steps on a weekly basis:
1. Perform the following instructions on each CASMR-100 to check the time sync between it
and the DAC 6000 and on the system:
a. Type ntpq and press Enter.
b. Type peers and press Enter.
c. Examine the output.
d. Type date and press Enter.
e. Check the time sync.
2. Store the 7 days of CASMR backups onto another system in case of the need of disaster
recovery.
