In design of the friction clutches of automobiles, knowledge on the thermo-

elasticity a priori is very informative in the initial design stage. Especially, the
precise prediction technique of maximum structural stress should be requested in
design of mechanical clutches for their durability and compactness.

: Clutch plates are usually made of cast iron and high carbon steels. The properties
of cast iron have high compressive strength, low tensile strength and no ductility. It
can be easily machined. Due to this reason, it is suitable for the clutch plate but its
cost is high. In order to reduce the cost of clutch plate material without affecting
the life and effectiveness of the clutch plate, we modify other material low carbon
steel for clutch plate.

This work depicts a solid modelling of multiplate clutch with PRO-E CAD
package that is employed for varied automotive applications. The structural
analysis of clutch plate is done over cork, copper and SA92 as friction lining
materials. The analysis is carried out on ANSYS workbench to get the foremost
appropriate friction material for clutch. From the analyzed results, stress, strain and
total deformation values were compared for all the three materials and the best one
was taken out. For study purpose, specifications of the clutch are obtained from the
pulsar DTSi model.

3DESIGN OPTIMIZATION OF A KEVLAR 29 SINGLE DISK FRICTION

CLUTCH PLATE BASED ON STATIC ANALYSIS USING ANSYS

A clutch plate is a significant component used in all motor vehicles nowadays,

which is used to transmit power produced by the engine to the gear box. A pressure
plate which is used for engaging and disengaging the clutch applies pressure on the
clutch plate, which results in small deformation and stress concentration in the
clutch plate. The aim of this work was to design a single disk friction clutch plate
made of Kevlar 29 and optimize the design, based on static analysis performed on
the clutch using Ansys workbench software. This work sheds light upon how to
optimize the design of the clutch plate, so as to deliver maximum performance and
last longer

Clutch is one of the essential components in automobiles. It is located between the

engine and the gear box. The main function of the clutch is to initiate the motion or
increase the velocity of the vehicle by
transferring kinetic energy from the flywheel. The present paper deals with the
designing and analysis of friction clutch plate. Design has done by using CATIA
V5 software and static structural analysis carried by using ANSYS. Finally the
plots for equivalent stress, strains and total deformation were obtained for different
friction materials for friction clutch plat, Uniform wear theory were used for the
analysis.
