Cylinder Liners - Sleeves, made of Grey cast-iron, ought to
have desired casting and machining qualities, viz. Strength,
toughness, hardness and wear resistance. These are mainly
of two types - Dry liner-sleeves and Wet liner-sleeves.The
Liners-sleeves are cast-in fir' , force (Press) fit or slip fit. The
interference between its outer diameter and bore-hole walls
depends on fit-type from 0.050 to 0.075mm. These are
available in wide range suitable for light, medium and heavy
duty applications.

Pistons & Piston-Rings

The material used in pistons should have good cast ability
like high strength, high hot strength, high strength-to-mass
ratio, good resistance to surface abrasion, good thermal
conductivity and low thermal expansion. Piston rings are
broadly-compression rings & control (scraper) rings. Piston
rings are made of high quality cast iron with certain
percentage of carbon, chromium, nickel and moly.

Connecting Rods

Connecting roads are made from steel forgings, but malleable

or spheroidal-graphite iron casting or sinter forgings are
beginning to be used for smaller engines. These have normally
either serrated or groove-and-tongue joints. Split half-shell
thin-wall bearings are incorporated in the big-end-housing
bore. It is essential to thinly overlay a soft-anti-friction alloy.

Bearings

In a piston engine, the main bearings are the

bearings on which the crankshaft rotates, usually
plain or journal bearings. The bearings hold the
crankshaft in place and prevent the forces created
by the piston and transmitted to the crankshaft by
the connecting rods from dislodging the crankshaft,
instead forcing the crank to convert the
reciprocating movement into rotation.
 Water Pumps

The water pump, a container made of

aluminium or iron, is part of the
cooling system. It contains an impeller
(looks like a fan) that circulates water
and coolant throughout the cooling
system, keeping the engine from
overheating.

Valve

An engine valve is found in your cylinder

head. You have intake and exhaust valves.
They open and close is a certain sequence
depending on the position of the pistons for
each cylinder. The intake valves draw outside
air in for combustion. The exhaust valves
open to let exhaust out after combustion.

Valve Guide

A valve guide is a cylindrical piece of metal,

pressed or integrally cast into the cylinder
head, with the valve reciprocating inside it.
Guides also serve to conduct heat from the
combustion process out from the exhaust
valve and into the cylinder head where it
may be taken up by the cooling system
