Objective:
To successfully build a mock wall corner with Plumbing, Electric, Insulation, Drywall (Hanging
and finishing), stairs, and a window opening. Construction materials shall comply with
specifications and graded by a rubric and your instructor(s).

Construction Steps:
1. Rough frame a main 2x4 wall 20-0 long and 8-1 1/8 high, with a standard stud spacing of 16
on center (o.c.) and all necessary plates. This will be a group effort for the 3rd year students.

2. Each student shall rough frame an additional wall perpendicular (@ 90 degrees) to the main
wall at a centerline of 48 from the end of the main wall and at 48increments from the end of
the wall and between each segment wall, 36 long, 8-1 1/8* high.
3. This wall shall be framed to include a rough opening of 20 wide x 32 high with a height to the
bottom of the header (lintel) of 82 (6-10) above finished floor (a.f.f.). All necessary studs shall
be installed at 16 o.c. All other necessary framing members shall be installed as required. All
walls shall be constructed plumb and level. The individual segments or bays will be assigned
by the instructor.

4. Each students Electrical work shall include 1 20-amp circuit from the service panel to your
partition. Each student shall provide a switched outlet on the short wall of each segment, 2
from end of short wall to center of box, 46 to bottom of box a.f.f. Switched receptacle shall be
located 9 from the main wall to the center of the box and 16 to bottom of box, a.f.f. Each
student shall install the proper circuit breaker in the common electrical panel. All wiring and
devices shall be installed to the code information being taught in this shop. Be certain of proper
box placement, staple placement, wire size, etc.

5. Each student shall install R-13 fiberglass batt insulation in one stud space of the common wall
within each segment. Secure insulation properly with staples, leaving no voids in insulation,
using caution to avoid compressing insulation which causes a loss in the R-value and
insulating efficiency.

6. Each student shall install PEX plumbing consisting of PEX pipe located vertically in the
main wall 10 from the short wall or 2-10 from the short wall depending on which side of the
main wall your segment is located ( so as to not conflict with other students adjacent work).
The pipe shall extend above the top plate by 2 and shall connect to a copper fitting, extending
into the room 3 from the face of drywall that is 8 a.f.f.

7. Each student shall install drywall (4x8 sheets), spaced above the floor to the bottom.
Apply drywall (in a horizontal manner) to the common wall in your segment first, completely
covering that wall, then installing drywall on the extension wall in one piece (vertically).
Drywall shall be fastened to the stud wall using drywall screws of an appropriate length and
spacing. All joints shall be taped, including corner and the mid seam. Drywall shall be finished
with 2 applications of joint compound and sanded to a smooth, even surface with no voids or
marks.

8. Stair risers/stringers shall be laid out and cut by each student according to specific instructions
from Mr. Miller. Each stringer will be a different set of riser heights and tread depth. Building
code states that risers shall be no greater than 7 and shall have no variance greater than
between the tallest and shortest riser. Treads shall be a minimum of 10 deep.

9. Job site(s) is to cleaned daily of all tools and debris, sweep up daily and discard /remove and
trash accordingly.

10. Advice will be given, if asked. Quizzes may also be applied to your work. Each student has
personal responsibility to perform the work in a timely manner. Manage your time in the shop
outside of the daily theory lessons, any tests that must be taken and remember that other
projects will come up and will need to be completed also. Deadline for project completion is
Friday, April 14, 2016.

11. All phases of this project (job) will be graded accordingly:

a. Rough Framing
b. Rough Electrical and fixtures
c. Insulation
d. Rough Plumbing
e. Drywall installation and finishing
f. Stair framing

12. Daily clean up and tool care is required and will be monitored
