1. Comparison between analog and digital oscilloscope.

ANALOG OSCILLOSCOPE DIGITAL OSCILLOSCOPE

Works with continuous variable voltages. Works with binary numbers consisting of
ones and zeros.
Directly reads analog voltage and displays it It reads the analog voltage and converts it
into digital form before being displayed on
on screen.
the screen.
Do not require ADC, microprocessor and Requires ADC, microprocessor and
acquision memory acquisition memory
Can only analyze signal in real time as there Can analyze signal in real time as well as can

data with facility of storage available.
Cannot analyze high frequency sharp rise Can analyze high frequency transients due to
time transients advanced DSP algorithms available and
ported on microprocessor which can operate
on stored samples of input voltage.

TYPES OF OSCILLOSCOPE AND THEIR DESCRIPTIONS

TYPES OF OSCILLOSCOPE DESCRIPTION

1. Dual Beam Oscilloscope Basic Principal

- Used to compare one signal with another.

This is because it has two beams
produced in a special type of CRT.
- Basically, its basic principal has a lot of
common to CRO as it is under the
Cathode Ray Oscilloscope category.
- However, a dual-beam oscilloscope able
to simultaneously produced two separate
electron beams therefore it can capture
the entirety of both signals. It had a
beam-splitter plate in its CRT and single-
ended vertical deflection following the
splitter.

Function/Application
- The main purpose of it is that it is used
to study two separate waveforms
simultaneously.
- Basically, it emits two electron beams
that are displayed simultaneously on a
single scope. It is whether individually or
jointly controlled.
- Dual beam oscilloscope is much
expensive compared to other types of
oscilloscope. It is also rarely used so it
rarely built nowadays.

2. Mixed Signal Oscilloscope Basic Principal

- Categorized in Digital Oscilloscope
category, a mixed-signal oscilloscope is
a type of oscilloscope that has two types
of inputs.

- They are a small number of analog

channels and a larger number of digital
channels.

- Generally, it combines all the

measurement capabilities and some
capabilities of a logic analyzer from
Digital Storage Oscilloscope.

- However, it is lack of advanced digital

measurement capabilities. As example,
the large number of digital acquisition
channels of full-fledged logic analyzers.

Function/Application

- The main application of mixed-signal

oscilloscope is the characterization and
debugging of hybrid analog or digital
circuits.

- For examples, embedded systems,

analog-to-digital converters (ADCs),
digital-to-analog (DACs) and control
systems.

3. Hand Held Oscilloscope Basic Principal

- Hand held oscilloscope is in Digital

Oscilloscope category so basically has
same principal as others in the category.

- However, a handheld oscilloscope is an

oscilloscope that has the ground
reference voltage common to all input
channel

- Therefore, the input signals have the

same voltage reference if more than one
measurement channel is used. This is
because they share default reference
which is the earth.

- Nowadays, a hand held oscilloscope is

commonly a digital sampling
oscilloscope, using a liquid crystal
display.

- Its extra feature includes lightweight and

have good accuracy.

Function/Application

- The main application of it includes test

and field service application.

4. PC-Based Oscilloscope Basic Principal

- The PC Based Oscilloscope is a type of

oscilloscope that consists of a specialized
signal acquisition board. This board
could be an external USB or Parallel port
device or an internal add-on PCI.

- This oscilloscope usually consists of an

electrical interface providing isolation
and automatic gain controls, several
high-speed analog-to-digital converters
and some buffer memory or even on-
board Digital Signal Processor (DSPs)

Function/Application

- The main function of this oscilloscope is

it provides the display, control interface,
disc storage, networking and often the
electrical power for the acquisition
hardware.
