Sci-Fi Unit

1. Related Unit Essential Question(s):

What are the Dangers of going to space?

2. Standard(s):

a. RI.7.1 Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what


the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
b. RI.7.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a
text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze
the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.

3. Learning Targets:
a. I can annotate the text as I follow along with a recording.
b. I can determine the meaning of vocabulary words by using context clues.
c. I can describe the main ideas of the text.

4. Academic Language Considerations:


a. Vocabulary- catastrophic, chronic, excruciating, monotonous, stimulus,
and subconscious.

5. Materials:
a. Students will need a hard copy of the article, Danger! This Mission to
Mars Could Bore You to Death.
b. Students will need a copy of the vocabulary worksheet.

6. Procedures:
Beginning
a. Prior to reading the article, students should fill out part A and B on their
vocabulary worksheets. These two sections are a preview of the
vocabulary in the article. This gets students thinking about the concepts
and types of words they will be interacting with.
Middle
b. Students will follow along to the recording of Danger! This Mission to
Mars Could Bore You to Death!.
c. As students are reading, they should be annotating the text.
i. Underlining vocabulary words.
ii. Circling interesting parts.
iii. Putting question marks next to confusing areas.
d. Students will be given the chance to think, pair, share after reading the
article.
i. Students should talk about what they annotated.
ii. They can ask questions for clarification or discuss interesting
parts.
e. Students will complete parts C,D, and E on the vocabulary worksheet.
End
f. Students will be given a comprehension check at the end of the period.
g. Teacher will display four questions on the SmartBoard.
h. Students will write their answers on a post-it-note.
i. The data from these exit slips will be used to group students for the rest of
the week.
j. When students are finished with their exit slip quiz, they should add the
article to their evidence log in Google Classroom.
i. Remind students to use proper citation when quoting parts of the
text. (authors last name page number).

7. Adaptations:
a. Students will follow along and annotate text as they listen to the article.
b. Students will be given a chance to discuss with their peers before the take
the exit slip quiz.

8. Assessment:
a. Students will be given a comprehension quiz after they have had a chance
to discuss the article with their peers.
b. Teacher will walk around and listen to the discussions.
c. Teacher will use data from the quiz to group students for the next few
days.
