 Although the UK has one of the lowest forest cover areas in Europe
just 13%, compared to 75% in Finland, 32% in Germany and 29%
in France it is the sixth largest consumer market in the
world and the fifth largest timber importer.

WITH SUCH BUYING POWER, THE UK HAS THE

POTENTIAL TO INFLUENCE THE MARKETPLACE.

With an increasingly
diverse and
discerning consumer
base, it is unsurprising
that sectors that use
forest products timber importers and
merchants, construction, retailing and fast
moving consumer goods are working hard
to develop and implement responsible wood
products procurement policies. More and
more companies are also recognising the
important role forest certification and
sustainable forest management play
in safeguarding forest biodiversity,
sustaining livelihoods and
contributing to rural development
and poverty alleviation.
This years stakeholder event will provide
a snapshot of forest certification and how it is
affecting forests in North America, Asia and
Europe. The theme will be PEFC
Certification Delivering
Impacts in the Forest.
The presentations will
enable those who are
trading in certified forest
products to learn more
about what lies behind
the PEFC label and the
difference forest certification
is making on the ground. Speakers from
around the world will illustrate the vital
importance of forests to biodiversity,
rural development and carbon
sequestration.
PEFC is now the fastest growing forest
certification programme in the world. Globally,
over 300 million hectares of forests are
now PEFC-certified and more than 18,000
companies are able to supply PEFC-certified
products. PEFCs distinctive two trees
label is used to provide consumers
with confidence and assurances of
responsible forest products sourcing
in the global marketplace.
This event will be relevant to those
trading in wood-based products including
retailers, brand owners, building contractors,
foresters and certified companies. It will
enable participants to learn
more about the critical
role that PEFC plays
in helping to deliver
key forest services
and show the
outcomes of forest
certification.
