Assignment 1

Please submit this assignment on 07th February 2017 (Tuesday), during lecture hour.
The assignment will be collected at the beginning of the class, 9.30 AM.
Any late submission will not be entertained.

Q1a) Define
i. First law of thermodynamics
ii. Second law of thermodynamics
iii. Zeroth law of thermodynamics

For every definition given, prove the law by giving an example.

(Hint: You may use the knowledge of energy, heat transfer or/and thermodynamics to
support your answer.)

b) What are the application areas of thermodynamics in your daily life? Briefly describe
three (3) of them.

Q2 The pressure in a natural gas pipeline is measured by the manometer shown in Figure Q2
with one of the arms open to the atmosphere. Determine the absolute pressure in the
pipeline, given the local atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa.

Q3 The gage pressure of the water inside the tank is given as 75.8 kPa, as shown in Figure
Q3. Determine the differential height, h of the water column.

Q4 A frictionless pistoncylinder device initially contains 200 L of saturated liquid

refrigerant-134a. The piston is free to move, and its mass is such that it maintains a
pressure of 900 kPa on the refrigerant. The refrigerant is now heated until its temperature
rises to 70C. Calculate the work done during this process.
