Mission and Vision Statements for Dr.

John Folks Middle School Library

Mission Statement

The mission of the John Folks Library is to provide resources and learning opportunities that will
support students and staff in becoming effective, responsible users of information and
technology, to encourage inquiry and critical thinking, and to foster a lifelong appreciation for
literature and reading.

Vision Statement

We will transform learning for all users by providing the best technological tools and resources
necessary for an integrated, global, and lifelong quest for knowledge.

1. Goal: Promote instruction in information literacy


Objective: Design and implement teaching and learning activities, both individually and
in collaboration with teachers/staff that reflect the best in current research and practice.
Action/ Strategy:
a. Teach students how to access, evaluate, and utilize information
b. Collaborate with teachers, administration, and community members to ensure that the
full range of information resources is available to promote student learning
c. Orchestrate access to information resources within and beyond the school library

2. Goal: Develop a library media program that supports the schools curriculum
Objective: Evaluate, acquire, provide, and promote information resources to support
curricular goals
Action/ Strategy:
a. Maintain current and comprehensive knowledge of the curriculum for each content
area of study
b. Promote collaboration between the library and the faculty/staff to ensure learning
opportunities are aligned with the curriculum
c. Attend department and grade level meetings to stay abreast of curricular needs which
may be supported by library services
d. Solicit regular feedback on the quality of resources and services

3. Goal: Develop a library media program that supports the needs of all learners
Objective: Evaluate, acquire, provide, and promote information resources to support the
needs of diverse learners
Action/Strategy:
a. Maintain a collection that is diverse in format and content to support the learning of
all students
b. Update the design of the physical space in the library to provide comfortable, easy
access to resources and services
c. Create and provide differentiated instruction in library lessons

4. Goal: Integrate and promote the use of technology to enhance instruction and
learning
Objective: Introduce the newest tools in technology to students, teachers, and the
community at large to enhance programs for the 21st Century Learner.
Action/Strategy:
a. Build and maintain expertise in assessing various technology products and services
b. Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for faculty and staff on
technology integration
c. Co-teach with classroom teachers as they integrate new knowledge into academic
lessons
d. Recommend/ offer online training opportunities for faculty/staff

5. Goal: Encourage students to develop an appreciation of reading for pleasure


Objective: Involve students in creating and implementing programs to increase literacy
awareness
Action/Strategy:
a. Focus on student promotion of books
b. Teach and model to students how to pursue areas of personal interest through reading
c. Develop and implement reading programs that promote reading for fun!

6. Goal: Increase parent and community involvement in the library program


Objective: Create and promote community outreach programs
Action/Strategy:
a. Create a weekly newsletter highlighting library events and services
b. Create a committee of teachers, students, and parents who will identify and contact
local businesses and organizations that would like to form a partnership with our
school
c. Invite established partners to join our Technology Action Team
d. Plan and promote events which bring the school and the community at large together
