Structural Analysis of Base Frame

1. General
1.1 Document Scope
The scope of this report is to verify the structural integrity of the base frame
structure for the following design conditions
In- place loading condition
Transportation condition
Lifting condition

1.2 Reference documents

The following Company general specifications and standard codes are used for

evaluating the base structure.

2014-4889-6L-0005
AISC 13th steel construction manual 2005 edition
API610 11th edition
ABS Rules for Building and Classing Mobile OffShore Drilling Units-2001.

2. Methodology and criteria

2.1 FE Modelling and Analysis
All analyses of the base skid structure have been performed using ANSYS 15
software.
3D models of pump, motor are considered along with base plate skid for
Transportation & in-place analysis
The base skid has been modelled as a 3D structure using Solid works software

and transferred to ANSYS using inbuilt importing facilities without any

geometric losses.
FEA model assumes that fillet welds are adequate to support the loads.

Hence all connections are considered as bonded connections.

2.1.1 FE model:

The model has been meshed (As shown in Fig 1) using higher order elements which

are available in Ansys software. The below FE model is used of transportation and in-
place analyses.

Motor is modelled using structural steel material and adjusted in its density

to get actual weight.

Anchor bolt is assumed to be A193 B7 Material during foundation load

calculations.
Materials for all other components are assumed as structural steel.

2.2 Transportation Analysis

2.2.1 General consideration
Base plate skid with all weights are properly secured in the cellar deck by means

of Foundation bolts in such a way to avoid movement in any direction.

Foundation holes are restrained in all directions at bolt holding contacts as

boundary conditions as shown in fig 2.

2.4 Lifting Analysis

2.4.1 General consideration

Baseplate along with Pump and Driver is considered for the Lift analysis.
Pump and Driver are represented as point mass at their respective COG

locations.
Structural Steel is taken as a material for the baseplate.
Straight vertical sling lifting is considered throughout this analysis.
Dynamic lift factor of 2 factoring to static lift weight of the structure is

considered.
Total weight of the equipment is as given in table 1, Dead weights.
Reaction loads/sling loads are as given in below section 3.3.4.

remotely at hook point. Self-weight is considered with Dynamic lift factor of 2 is used

for factoring static lift weight of the structure. Pump and motor is modelled using

3. FE Results & Discussion

3.1 Transportation Analysis:
3.1.1 Deflection:

Max rotor misalignment during transportation is close to 0.23mm. The result plot of

all the load steps are shown in Appendix I. From the above values of deformation, it

is evident that deformation inside the casing is still lesser and well within the design

clearances.

3.1.2 Von-Mises Stress

Max von mises of baseplate during transportation is close to 44 MPa < 150 MPa
which is observed on secondary beams below the motor. The result plot of all the

load steps are shown in Appendix I. From the above values of deformation, it is

evident that deformation inside the casing is still lesser.

3.1.3 Foundation Bolt Reactions(N)

Max foundation reaction during transportation condition is close to 20kN in shear and

tension for load case 5 and 8 respectively.

3.2 In place Analysis:

3.2.1 Deflection:

Max misalignment of rotors during in-place condition is close to 0.332mm which is

less than allowable limit 0.38mm, API 610 11th edition. The result plot of all the load

steps are shown in Appendix II.

Fig 8: Load case 4- Casing distortion

From above figure the max relative displacement inside the casing is close to 0.014
mm, which is less than 35% diameteral clearance. For this pump, minimum wear ring

diametral clearance is close to 0.584 mm.35 % diametral clearance = 0.204mm. Thus

no contact observed between stationary and rotating parts.

3.2.2 Von-Mises Stress

Max von mises of baseplate during transportation is close to 34 MPa < 150 MPa

which is observed on main beams below towards pump side. The result plot of all
the load steps are shown in Appendix I.

tension for load case 7 and 8 respectively.

3.3 Lifting Analysis:

3.3.1 Deflection:

Fig 9: Deformation during lifting

Max deflection of 0.56mm is observed at the motor pedestal. Deflections on the

primary beams and secondary beams are close to 0.3mm and 0.55 mm respectively

which is less in compared to the length of the respective beams. Allowable

deflections during lifting is L/350. L =1371/350 =3.91mm. Thus deflections are

within limits.

3.3.2 Von-Mises Stress plot

Fig 10: Von mises stress during lifting

Max von mises stress observed is close to 100 MPa < 150 MPa on lifting lug close to front

end toward motor side. Von mises stress on the primary beam and secondary beam is close

to 12 MPa & 30MPa respectively and within the allowable limit. Max loaded lug is sub-
modelled by transferring displacements from actual model to the refined model around the

max loaded lifting lug. The sub-modelling results are as shown in Fig 11.

Von mises stress in the lifting lug is close to 123 MPa < 150 MPa. Max Principal stress 120

MPa< 150MPa subsides into the weld material. Max shear stress on lifting hole is close to 68

MPa < 90MPa. Thus lifting lugs are safe to withstand the specified dead loads and lifting

factors.

Baseplate anchor bolt layout:

Fig 13: Anchor bolt layout

3.4.1 In place Analysis:

The bolt reactions for in place analysis is higher than the transportation condition. So the

foundation bolt calculations is performed for in place analysis. From above calculation

sheet, a bolt size of 7/8 UNC is required to take up the above specified loadings for in-place

condition with minimum pretension of 600 N-m. The max direct tensile stress due to pullout

load for a 7/8 UNC with minor diameter of 18.75mm is 108 MPa < 172 MPa (ASME bolt

allowable stress), thus safe.

3.4.2 Summary & Conclusions

Transportation Analysis
Max rotor misalignment during transportation is close to 0.23mm.
Max von mises of baseplate during transportation is close to 44 MPa < 150

MPa which is observed on secondary beams below the motor.

Max foundation reaction during transportation condition is close to 20kN in shear

and tension for load case 5 and 8 respectively.

In place Analysis
Max misalignment of rotors during in-place condition is close to 0.33mm

which is less than allowable limit 0.38mm, API 610 11th edition.
Max relative displacement inside the casing is close to 0.014 mm, which is

less than 35% diameteral clearance. Thus no contact observed between

stationary and rotating parts.

Max von mises of baseplate during in place condition is close to 34 MPa <

150 MPa which is observed on main beams below towards pump side.
Max foundation reaction during Inplace condition is close to 25.5kN in shear & 30
KN in tension for load case 7 and 8 respectively.

Lifting Analysis
Max deflection of 0.56mm is observed at the motor pedestal. Deflections on

the primary beams and secondary beams are close to 0.36mm and 0.52 mm

respectively which are less in compared to the length of the respective

beams.
Max von mises stress observed is close to 100 MPa < 150 MPa on lifting lug

close to front end toward motor side.

For sub modelled lifting lug, Max Von mises stress is close to 123 MPa <150

MPa. This stress exists at the corner between lifting lug and main beam

which sub sides in to the weld material. Von mises stress in the lifting lug is

close to 100 MPa < 150 MPa. Thus lifting lugs are safe to withstand the

specified dead loads and lifting factors.

Anchor bolt Analysis

A bolt size of 7/8 UNC is required to take up the above specified loadings for

in-place condition. The max direct tensile stress due to pullout load for a 7/8

UNC with minor diameter of 18.75mm is 108 MPa < 172 MPa (ASME bolt

allowable stress), thus safe.
