Earth and Space Science: Sustainability Week 6 Term 1

Learning goal - some of Earths resources are renewable, including water that cycles
through
the environment, but others are non-renewable.
Key Question - What is a resource and what factors help determine its sustainability?
Key words resource, sustainable, renewable, non-renewable, environment
4-2-1 strategy: You will be assigned one key word circle it in the list above
Think and write four words or phrases that capture the most important elements of
your word

Form a group with other students with the same key word, share ideas and make a list
on the
A4 paper of the words you have in common. Then decide on two words or phrases that
the
group agrees capture the most important aspect of the keyword and write them below.

Finally, underline the one the best represents the most important aspect of the key
word.
We will share these with the class. Write the other words below.
Class word or phrase Dictionary meaning

Resource

Sustainable

Renewable

Non-renewable

Environment
Write some resources that you use in daily life.

Earth and Space Sciences: Investigating Water Week 7 Term 1

We are learning about characteristics of water and the water cycle.

Watch Properties of Water Chemistry https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0py6BFlFZw

Write what you know about the properties of water?

Investigating some properties of water: pH and cohesion

When doing an investigation, we need to think about our scientific plan:
We are going to change We are going to keep the same We are going to measure

We will have 3 samples of liquid water to test two ways

For the pH test you will have:
1 piece of blue litmus paper (turns red in presence of acid below pH7) cut into 3 equal pieces
1 piece of red litmus paper (turns blue in presence of base above pH7) cut into 3 equal pieces
Use a pipette to add a drop of each sample to one piece of each paper.
Record your results and what you notice in the table

Next place your plastic mat over the paper and place a drop of water in the circle and use a
match stick to drag it along the line.

What do you notice?

Try to this with each sample and record the time it takes for you to get the drop to the end of the
line

Sample 1 Sample 2 Sample 3

pH test

Drag test
What are your conclusions?

Earth and Space Sciences: Investigating Water Week 9 Term 1
Learning goal: Understanding some of the characteristics of water and the water cycle.
Science understanding influences the development of practices in areas of human activity such
as industry, agriculture and marine and terrestrial resource management.
Watch the NASA water cycle video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaDkph9yQBs
Write and draw to show what you know about the water cycle.

Read the Article Tapping the incredible weirdness of water by physicist Marcia Barbosa.
New Scientist April 4 2015 pg 26-27
Why is Dr Barbosa fascinated by water?

Explain at least one interesting property of water.

What is desalination?

Describe at least one method of desalination.

Write about some other ways that water can be collected that are described in the article.

Earth and Space Sciences: Investigating cyclone and water current action Week 10
Term 1

Learning Goal: to pose questions and make predictions about scientific investigations.
Identify, plan and apply the elements of scientific investigations to answer questions and solve
problems using equipment and materials safely and identifying potential risks.

In the southern hemisphere cyclones always spin in a clockwise direction but in the northern
hemisphere hurricanes always spin in an anti-clockwise direction.
This is due to the rotation of the Earth and the Coriolis effect.
Some people believe that this effect can be observed watching water empty from sinks or
containers down the plughole.
What question could you ask and investigate scientifically in our science room?

Use the equipment provided to plan and try out an investigation to explore this effect.

What is a fair test?

How will you do a fair test?

Write what you noticed and can you answer your question?

Plan: What equipment do you plan to use and how will you use it? Write and Draw
