Topic 4:
Lateral Force Procedures

Reaction:

In my opinion about the topic presented by the group reporter, the procedure in determining
the lateral forces which may act to the structure is very much essential to those who study seismic
design structures. Because, we know that in designing structures for seismic considerations, the
critical component there is the base shear determination which can be derived from the total lateral
forces of the structure.
Ive learned that the vertical distribution of storey shears, there are assumptions to be
considered just like in designing reinforced concrete structural members. They are: The building is
regular and nearly symmetrical, the lateral stiffness of each floor are approximately the same, the
lateral stiffness of each floor are uniformly distributed in plan, the weight of each floor is
approximately the same and is uniformly distributed in plan, and of course there is a continuous load
path between members.
I like how they deliver the report, even though their topic is kind of boring, because they
have used some technique to liven the classrooms atmosphere through giving questions with
immediate answer and a corresponding food reward for those who can answer.
I do not like some part of their delivery specially the reporters cute voice. But there are
among them who have very loud voice in delivering the discussion, so, not all of them has this cute
voice.
I think the reporters for this topic should include the flow chart for their topic since their
report is about the procedure in determining the lateral force of the structure. Maybe they can use
bullets or shapes with arrows for us to have a visual summary of the lateral force procedure.
In summary, their report about the topic assigned to them is very good but they should
incorporate my suggestion to include to their presentation the flow chart for the lateral force
procedure so that it is easier for us to summarize.
