Rubber Stamp Lesson Plan

April 13, 2017

Objectives: In this lesson students will create a one-color rubber stamp and border stamp.
They will create matching envelopes and cards using their original design.

Length: 2-3 weeks

Skills and Ideas: Sketching, Transferring Images, color consideration and theory, using printing
press, registration, traditions of printmaking, artistic expression, using tools, cutting linoleum,
using revered image for printmaking, registration of a print, how to sign and title editions of a
print, following directions, rolling out ink for printing, how to ink a stamp for prints.

Vocabulary: Adinkra, Motif, Reversal, Brayer, Tradition, Edition, Negative space,

Materials: (Instructional) - Demo of how to do a rubber cut, example of a one-color rubber


stamp, stamp used and original drawings, Old students work as examples,

(Art) - blocks of rubber, sketch pads, pencils, carbon paper, tracing paper, cutting tools, block
ink, printing press, printing paper.

Steps:
Lesson 1 Day 1 (Monday Schedule):
(5 min): Introduction of the project
What are Symbols? What are some symbols around the campus
that you have seen?
We will be making a stamp based off of a symbol. No numbers or
letters only unless it has a meaning behind it.

Students must log in using the game pin provided under classic
mode.
(10 min): Start drawing ideas for a symbol you will make into a stamp. Try at least
3 different ideas, dont stop on your first one.
(5 min): Clean Up and Collect first symbol ideas to check for understanding.

Lesson 2 Day 2:
(5 min): Check in
Who can tell me what a symbol is or give me an example?
What are some symbols that you guys are drawing?

Examples of symbols and why they are used
(15 min): Talk about symbols that students have drawn, what have I seen, what
do I want to see in the final? How can students accomplish this? Play with and look at old
student examples
(20 min): Work time, Students must show teacher or assistant the symbols that
they are making before getting the stamp materials.
(10 min): Exit Ticket - What I have done today, What I will do tomorrow, What I
will need to be successful tomorrow. Clean up once done.

Day 3, 4, 5, 6:
Student work days. Carving and drawing symbols.
Students old examples will be available for reference.
Check in and check on students work before letting students carve.

Lesson 3 Day 7:
(5 min): Check in, How is everyone's stamp coming along? Any concerns or
questions?
(20 min): We will be making letters and envelops with these stamps. Have
students follow along with they youtube video to make their first stamp.

(25 min) Create envelopes, students need at least 10 envelopes folded by the
end of the period. Check in and replay video if students need guidance. Do not need to
be stamped yet!
(5 min) Check in and clean up.

Day 8, 9:
(5 min): Check in. Does anyone need to re watch the youtube video? You will be
stamping your writing paper and envelopes so that they match. Make sure to include a
boarder and stamps to decorate the middle. You may borrow other students stamps, but
at least 5 must all match with your stamp and symbol that you made.
Work time for students
On day 10 we will be doing a gallery walk to look at all others work.
Must have 5 matching envelopes and paper with the students design and
5 more with any other stamps. 10 envelopes and paper total at the end.

VAPA: Visual Arts Content Standards:
Perception and Response- Learning rubber stamps cut process, printmaking traditions
and at history, thinking about positive and negative space, reversal and text in the
printmaking an edition.
Arts Heritage- Traditions in printmaking, different uses for print medium in different
cultures
Aesthetic Valuing- How print medium is used as an art form. Why would you want to
make an edition? How does this differ from other art forms? How can art be used as a
for of social commentary?
Creative Expression- 2.1 Solve a visual arts problem that involves the effective use of
the elements of art and the principles of design. Choosing and drawing one's own
design. Learning how manipulating surface of rubber affects printing. Think about line
and texture and how it can be used to give illusions of dimensions of space. How color
choice and paper affect final image. Creation of an original image or design and showing
it to others for a critique.
