The Volume of a pyramid is given by the formula,

1
V = Area of the Base Perpendicular Height
3

For the above pyramid this becomes,

1
V = 30 27 33
3

The third is part of the formula.

Which of the following three numbers to third is YOUR CHOICE.
Here are three ways of working out the calculation.

V = 10 27 33 V = 30 9 33 V = 30 27 11
V = 9 990
V = 10 990 990
V = 9900 990

10.2 Factorising Quadratics

The command "factorise" means "make brackets".

A quadratic is an expression typically containing some x2 plus some x plus a number.

10.3 Example
x 2 + 8x + 15
To factorise this, we need two numbers that multiply to give 15 and add to give 8.
Thus;
x2 + 8x + 15
= ( x + 3) ( x + 5)

10.4 Exercise
Factorise;
(i) x 2 + 9x + 8 ( ii ) x 2 + 6x + 9
Multiply to give 8, add to give 9 Multiply to give 9, add to give 6

( iii ) x 2 + 7x + 12 ( iv ) x 2 + 6x + 5
Multiply to give 12, add to give 7 Multiply to give 5, add to give 6

(v) x 2 + 9x + 14 ( vi ) x 2 + 4x + 3
Multiply to give 14... Multiply to give 3 ...

( vii ) x 2 + 8x + 12 ( viii ) x 2 + 8x + 15

( ix ) x 2 + 8x + 16 (x) x 2 + 5x + 4
10.5 Example
At first glance this next question looks the same as the questions already considered.
x 2 8x + 15
And, indeed, to factorise this, we again need two numbers that multiply to give 15
and add to give 8. However, the minus sign in the question results in both answer
brackets containing a minus.
Thus;
x2 8x + 15
= x 3) (x 5)
(

To see that this is correct, check that expanding the brackets of the answer gets
back to the question.

10.6 Exercise
Factorise;
(i) x 2 - 12x + 27 ( ii ) x 2 - 4x + 4
Multiply to give 27, add to give 12 Multiply to give 4, add to give 4

( iii ) x 2 - 7x + 12 ( iv ) x 2 - 14x + 48
Multiply to give 12, add to give 7 Multiply to give 48, add to give 14

(v) x 2 - 17x + 66 ( vi ) x 2 - 8x + 16
Multiply to give 66, ... Multiply to give 16, ...

( vii ) x 2 - 5x + 4 ( viii ) x 2 - 11x + 28

( ix ) x 2 - 17x + 70 (x) x 2 - 13x + 40

11.2 Factorising Quadratics
Previously, two types of factorisation problem where considered.
x2 + 8x + 15 x2 8x + 15
= ( x + 3) ( x + 5) = ( x 3) ( x 8)

11.3 Example
x 2 + 7x 18
To factorise this, we need two numbers that multiply to give 18 and subtract to give 7.
Thus;
x2 + 7x 18
= ( x 2) ( x + 9)
The bigger number gets the plus.

11.4 Exercise
Factorise;
(i) x 2 + x - 90 ( ii ) x 2 + 5x - 66
Multiply to give 90, subtract to give 1 Multiply to give 66, subtract to give 5

( iii ) x 2 + 2x - 80 ( iv ) x 2 + 2x - 48
Multiply to give 80, subtract to give 2 Multiply to give 48, subtract to give 2

(v) x 2 + 3x - 18 ( vi ) x 2 + 5x - 24
Multiply to give 18, ... Multiply to give 24, ...

( vii ) x 2 + x - 20 ( viii ) x 2 + 4x - 21

( ix ) x 2 + 2x - 15 (x) x 2 + 5x - 6
11.5 Example
The last type of problem is a quadratic with two minus signs, such as
x 2 7x 18
To factorise this, we again need two numbers that multiply to give 18
and subtract to give 7.
x2 7x 18
= x + 2) (x 9)
(

This time, however, the bigger number gets the minus.

11.6 Exercise
Factorise;
(i) x 2 - 6x - 27 ( ii ) x 2 - 4x - 60
Multiply to give 27, subtract to give 6 Multiply to give 60, subtract to give 4

( iii ) x 2 - 2x - 63 ( iv ) x 2 - 5x - 36
Multiply to give 63, subtract to give 2 Multiply to give 36, subtract to give 5

(v) x 2 - 3x - 18 ( vi ) x 2 - 2x - 99
Multiply to give 18, ... Multiply to give 99, ...

( vii ) x 2 - 3x - 88 ( viii ) x 2 - x - 12

( ix ) x 2 - 4x - 45 (x) x 2 - x - 42
11.7 Homework

( iii ) x 2 - 3x - 70 ( iv ) x 2 - 4x -77
(v) x 2 - 3x - 28 ( vi ) x 2 - 3x - 40

( vii ) x 2 - 5x - 14 ( viii ) x 2 - 4x - 32
