1 Area X Update
My term as Area X Director will come to an end in June. I am pleased to announce
that your new Area X Director will be Stephanie Hurst! Stephanie is a member of the Ramona
chapter, Iota Rho. She has recently served as its president. Stephanie has been the chairman
of the annual Area X Celebration for the past four years. Her organizational skills, attention to
details, and knowledge of DKG procedures will enable her to be an outstanding Area
Director. Stephanie is looking for members to serve on her board. The Area X board meets
just three times a year, on Saturday mornings. Serving on the board is a fun way to meet new
DKG sisters, help your Area, and broaden your experiences as a member of DKG. If you are
interested in participating as a member of the Area X Board, please contact your chapter
president. Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, May 20th at 8:30, in Escondido. You are
welcome to join us!
On a recent foggy March morning about 100 of your Area X sisters united in a genuine
spiritual fellowship to celebrate members of our chapters and communities at the annual
Area X Celebration. This years theme was Pioneer Women Educators in Hawaii. Dr. Sandee
Bonura entertained us with photographs and stories of American women teachers who, in
the late 1800s, traveled for months around the tip of South America to teach children on
Oahu. They were brave women, struggling to teach in a culture unlike anything they had
experienced in the United States.
To uphold DKG Purpose # 2 we honored six Outstanding Chapter Members, a student
teacher, a community service volunteer; and our Area Director, Lynette Lange, as the
Outstanding Area X Member. Chosen by their chapter sisters for serving their chapters were
Dot Selvaggio of Beta Delta, Brenda Heil of Delta Iota, Dianne Graves of Eta Chi, Deborah
Parks of Eta Eta, Liz McLaughlin of Iota Rho, and Joanne Demmer of Zeta Pi. Congratulations
to these outstanding chapter members.
We honored Delta Iota member Carolyn Royer for her service to the teachers and
students of the Escondido Union School District. Carolyn has served as a volunteer member
of the Escondido Education Foundation board of directors. She is responsible for recruiting

new board members and raising funds to
provide grants to teachers in Escondido.
Three chapters were honored because of
their significant anniversaries. Iota Rho is
celebrating 30 years as a chapter, Eta Eta
is celebrating 50 years, and Delta Iota is 60!
Members with exactly 25, 30, 40, and 50
years of continuous membership were
recognized. Three of the Eta Eta founding
members, Mary Ellen Jones, Martha
Johnson, and Harriette Hembree; and
Virginia Ito of Beta Delta, received
standing ovations as we honored them for
their 50 years of DKG membership.
Raffle baskets and silent auction items
were taken home by fortunate recipients.
The money raised at the event will be used
for scholarships for Area X members who
want to attend professional development
seminars, DKG legislative study sessions,
technology weekends, the DKG California
Convention, or the Southwest Regional
Conference. Thank you to all of you who
attended and helped support our fund-
raising efforts. The 2018 Celebration will be
held on St. Patricks Day. Reserve the date
on your calendars now!

DKG California Update
The upcoming 2017 DKG California
Convention will be held the weekend of
May 5 7th at the LAX Marriott Hotel. I
encourage you to take advantage of the
nearby location, to experience the
excitement and sisterhood only found at a
state convention. Seminars and sessions will
be held throughout the weekend. Keynote
speakers will motivate, inspire, and
entertain you. If you cannot attend all
three days, then consider driving up for the
Saturday sessions and meals. Scholarships
are available from Area X to help pay the

registration fee. Ask your chapter president
how to apply for one. Details and
information about the sessions, meals, and
guest speakers can be found
at DKGCalifornia.org.
3 International Update
Aloha Wahines! (Thats the
Hawaiian word for women.) The
2017 Southwest Regional Conference will be
held in Honolulu July 4 7th. Several members
of Area X are already registered to attend.
This is a fun conference, without business
meetings. The registration form and
conference details are in the DKG
International newsletter, which was mailed to
your home in mid-March. It is also available
online at DKG.org. Scholarships to help pay
the registration fee are available from Area X.
Ask your chapter president how to apply for
one. We hope you can join us for fun and
relaxation, Hawaiian style.

Belta Delta members enjoyed being very

county and state, and

of young girls who have been rescued from
sex trafficking and slavery here in the United
States.
In December our membership explored the
world of improv and became human
machines showing how important each part
is to the proper function of a machine.
Change is not always easy, but sometime it's
necessary. In April our chapter will be
holding its celebration dinner for new
members and celebrating longevity
milestones at The Crossing in April 2017 (First
time location for our chapter's celebration
dinner). The restaurant is connected to a
neighborhood golf course and has
wonderful views.

Eta Chi sisters like to stay busy. This year so
far, we have had two Out of Meeting
Experiences at the Domaine Artefact
Winery in Escondido. We are planning a
Road Scholar Trip to Cumberland Falls
Kentucky in April 9 through the 15th. There
may be some spaces available if you would

then contact Dian Self to be sure to be
added to our group.
We are excited for our upcoming
celebration of Dr. Seuss Birthday at the 4S
ranch branch of the San Diego County
Library. The childrens librarian there was
previously at Ramona, where our Iota Rho
sisters put on quite the event each year.
When she transferred to our area she
immediately went online to find the closest
DKG chapter and a beautiful partnership
was born! This will be our third year following

Our Christmas party was held once again
at our member Susan Davis home. The

Weve had great attendance at our fun and
busy Chapter meetings and Board meetings.
Our ladies are fully engaged with their own
committees and offer so many creative
ideas. Ideas continue to flow at Board
meetings. It has made my presidency such
a joy! Typical of teachers, our members
jump in to serve in whatever way they

that our treasury has grown, we feel more

Our February activity is filling Jared Boxes to
be supplied to the military families. Very
generously, the staff at the Military YMCA
will be picking up the boxes from Vista.

CELEBRATION
This years
event was held
at the Twin
Oaks Golf Club
in San
Marcos. The
Hawaiian
theme was a
big hit where the nearly 100 attendees were
greeted with leis when they checked in. The
tables were decorated with Pineapple
centerpieces and a tropical photo booth
was set along one wall. It was a big hit for
group photos!
We had a good turnout from all of our
chapters, plus 14 more, which included CA
State officers, Area Directors, guests and our
presenter. Judy Kearns, past President of
California State, gave a talk on the
importance of membership. Brenda Morton,
Chi Chapter in LA, spoke about this years
CA State Convention being held at the LAX
Marriott in May. Julie Drysdale, presumptive
incoming President of CA State, Carol
Gilmore, Area XV Director and Barbara
Eisele, Area XVI Director, among others, also
attended.

professor at Azusa
Pacific
University. She has
a deep interest in
history with a
special interest in Hawaii. She gave a
wonderful power point presentation on
American women educators who came to
Hawaii throughout the 19th century to teach
native children under very challenging
conditions. Many thanks to her for a
wonderful and enlightening presentation!

next two year term!
Chapters donated beautiful baskets and
individual items for our silent auction
fundraiser. Some of the baskets were part
of a raffle and attendees had fun bidding
on the items and hoping to win a basket in
the raffle. More than $1000 was raised for
the Area X Scholarship fund! Lots of effort
went in to putting on this successful event.
