particularlythefibroushusk(mesocarp)ininnerwoodyendocarpwiththreegerminationpores.
Themeatyseedtissue(endosperm)eventastesalittlelikethecoconut.Infact,thispalmwas
onceplacedinthesamegenusasthecoconutpalm(Cocosnucifera).ItwasnamedCocos
plumosa.LaterthenamewaschangedtoArecastrumromanzoffianumandfinallytoSyagrus
romanzoffiana.
Queenpalmendocarpsshowingthemany"faces"producedbygerminationpores.Thefarright
endocarpwaspolishedbyStevenDisparti.

Jellypalm(Butiacapitata),aSouthAmericanmonoeciouspalmnativetoBrazil.Thelarge
clusterofyellowishorangedrupesisproducedonastalknearthebaseofthecurvedleaves.
Thedrupeshaveafleshy,sweetmesocarpwiththeflavorofapricots.Theyareeatenfreshor
madeintojellies,jams,cakes,piesandotherdeliciousdeserts.
Left:Carnadaywaxpalm(Coperniciaalba)nativetoParaguay,northernArgentina,Bolivia,and
contiguoussouthwesternBrazil.Itresemblesthecarnaubawaxpalm(C.prunifera)andisa
secondarysourceofindustrialwax.Leavesareremovedindividuallyfromthetree,cutand
shredded,andthendried,sothatwaxflakesoff.Apoundofcarnaubawaxisobtainedfromabout
20leaves.Thispowderismelted,strained,andthenmoldedintoblocks,tobeshippedto
manufacturingcountries.Right:LeafbaseandpetioleofC.albashowingsharp,clawlikespines.
Theleaveshaveathick,waxycuticlelayercoveringtheepidermis.Severalpiecesofraw
carnaubawaxfromC.pruniferaarealsoshownatbottomleft.Alittleknownfact:Carnauba
waxisusedonJellyBeanandgormetJellyBellycandiestoproducetheshinysurface!
