PART I: PLANNING
Magnetism!

Title of Lesson
Original

Source
Science
Subject Area (s)
Kindergarten
Grade Level
K.P.4 Students will demonstrate an understanding of the observable
(Curriculum Standards) properties of matter.

Objects can be described and classified by their observable properties,

Description and Background by their uses, and by whether they occur naturally or are manufactured.
Different properties of objects are suited for different purposes. This
Information lesson was designed to demonstrate the various uses of magnets.

Students will be able to analyze and interpret data to compare the

Lesson Objectives qualitative properties of an object (attraction to magnets) and classify
materials by their observable properties, by their uses, and by whether
they are natural or human-made.

It is not essential for students to go beyond this level of knowledge at

Varying Objectives for this time.
Individuals Needs

The purpose of this lesson is to give students a visual experience of how

Statement of Purpose magnets work.

-Wand Magnets
-Doughnut magnets
-Lumens light
Materials and Resources -Pencil/Paper
-Various test objects
I will open the lesson with a read aloud on magnets.
Anticipatory Set

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

Right after the anticipatory set, I will ask higher order thinking questions
Pre-assessment such as:
What do you remember about magnets?
How could you describe a magnet?
I will inform students that todays lesson will be about magnets. Then, I
Teacher Modeling or will show a detailed PowerPoint on the attraction of magnets. Then I will
pause the PowerPoint to model and demonstrate a hands on experiment
Demonstration
showing students how magnets attract/repel.

For demonstration, I will introduce the different magnets using the

Lumens. I will talk about how opposite sides attract and how like sides
repel one another. I will also demonstrate various objects using different
types of magnets. While demonstrating, I will ask the students a variety
of questions about the attraction of magnets.
During the PowerPoint, we will come to a point which I will guide the
Guided Practice students to further understand the characteristics of magnets. The
students will be able to compare which objects have an attraction to
magnets and which objects do not. I will guide the students by asking
additional questions regarding the objects that they saw on the
PowerPoint, such as:
How do you know this a magnet?
Why did you categorize
Use your own words to tell why

I will give students enough time to answer the questions. I would then
ask students if they have any questions about magnets.

To check for understanding, I will ask students to make predictions

Checking for Understanding before the experiment. Throughout the lesson, I will ask them questions
like:
What do you see?
What do you think will happen next?
Why do you think this happened?
To show they have internalized the knowledge, students will complete a
cut and paste activity on magnets. (See attached)

Independent Practice
I will close the lesson by playing a video on Magnets
Closure
To demonstrate what they have learned, students will complete an
Assessment assessment on sorting magnets
(See attached)
(attach to lesson plan)
For an extension, students will play I Spy. I will have students move
Extension Activities around the classroom and identify objects that would attract a magnet
using a handout.
I will use technology throughout the lesson to teach, demonstrate, guide,
and review the characteristics of magnets.
