RE: Expectations Memo

For the purpose of reflecting on the changes I have undergone since arriving at my internship, I will
express my initial impressions on the adjustment to my internship. Starting this internship, I knew that my
work ethic was a major concern in respect to being able to learn and develop as an engineer as well as
managing my time effectively. Before this internship, I studied alone most of the time but through
experiences in the first few weeks of this internship, I have discovered that working in teams is just as
effective as working alone as well as grasping a deeper understanding of how much writing is required to
be a successful intern.

When I arrived at this internship, I knew that my previous work ethic would not be up to par with what
was required to succeed in the XLIX internship. I never had to study much before tests or put forth
tremendous effort of projects all while receiving top grades. I didnt know how to balance work, class,
and outside activities effectively which will play a crucial role in my success as an intern. This all boiled
down to the change I needed to make with time management.

In the first few weeks of this internship I have had to make a drastic change towards my time
management skills. I first started with obtaining a large calendar to write down my classes and important
activities for the week ahead along with writing my class assignments on notecards with the due date and
placing them on my wall next to my work area. This helps to remind me when I finish with classes what
work needs to be done with priority going towards to most imminent assignments.

Prior to this internship, I studied alone for only thirty minutes to an hour and received excellent grades on
all assignments. This drastically changed with the internship because I learned very quickly that I needed
to study for much longer to succeed. However, I realized that working with a team made my time
studying much more effective and also allowed me to see other ways to approach problems, studying, and
managing work and school effectively.

When I began the XLIX internship, I did not understand how much writing I would be required to do nor
how crucial it was to making of a desirable engineer in the workforce. In the first days of my internship, I
was made aware of, through many sources, reading, and advising, that writing was a key part of being an
engineer intern. I developed a deeper understanding of how important writing would be not only to my
success but to show my management team and future employers that I have the necessary soft skills to
succeed in the work place and make an impact on and in everything around me.

From worry about work ethic to study habits to writing, my impressions from the first weeks of my
internship have been some of nervousness, realization, and commitment. XLIX internship has made me
understand new things that will help develop my ability to be a successful engineer and I will continue to
learn from future experiences at this internship.

I have neither given nor received any unauthorized help on this assignment, nor witnessed any violation
of the UNC Charlotte Code of Academic Integrity.
