Praxis Core Exam Analysis

The Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators Exam is a requirement for all

education students in Nevada. Students aiming to receive a Bachelors in Education will

not be admitted into the education programs at UNLV, NSC, or UNR without passing

scores for this exam. A student planning to pass this test must receive a score of 150 in

Math, 156 in Reading, and 162 in Writing.

To prepare for the practice exam for the Praxis, I read through the instructions, so

I knew what to expect while taking these tests. Honestly, I did not have time within the

week to review questions for the Math, Reading, and Writing test. I read information

about the exam, however, I did not practice or study any of the actual test material. I have

been taking a Math class every semester for the past three consecutive semester, but I

have not taken a Reading or Writing class for the past four years. This situation worried

me because not being exposed to Reading and Writing skills for so long made me forget

so much that I learned in these classes. Ultimately, I felt more confident taking the Praxis

Core Practice Test for Math because I have been in Math classes recently and have been

working hard and receiving great grades in these classes.

The scores I received in taking the practice exam indicated to me that a lot of

work still needs to be done to pass theses test. I scored an 87% in the Math portion of the

test. That score of 87% states that I am likely to pass the Math section of the Praxis. I felt

better while taking this exam compared to the Reading and Writing test because of the

recent Math classes I took. The fact that I did not study for these test truly showed in my
PRAXIS 2

scores for the Reading and Writing portion. For Reading, I was given a score of 43% and

for Writing I placed at 63%. Both of these scores express that improvement is needed.

I am extremely disappointed in myself for the scores I received in the Reading

and Writing portion. These scores made me realize I need to prepare extensively in the

future, if I am serious about passing these tests. I noticed my main problem was that I

have forgotten words or terms used in Reading and Writing. I did not know where to

place commas or what certain words like anecdote meant. It was difficult to answer

questions which contained words I did not know the meaning of. Not being exposed to

Reading and Writing for so long have hindered me from being knowledgeable in these

subjects. I plan to buy books and look for online resources to refresh my memory and

improve my Reading and writing skills. I also plan to review test taking skills because it

has been so long since I have taken an exam like this. I found myself rushing through

passages often, and not Reading through the instructions carefully to understand clearly

what I needed to answer. For the next few months, I will work hard in aiming to pass all

portions of this test. I will continue to exercise my knowledge in solving Math problems

so I will be able to pass the real Praxis test for this portion. For Reading and Writing, I

will utilize all study material I will find online and in books to excel in this exam.
