Installing CIFER
Windows

In this section you will be given step-by-step instructions for installing CIFER and its ancillary packages.

Important Note:

If you have installed a previous version of CIFER on the target system, you MUST first uninstall all the
components of the software before you continue by following the uninstall instructions under page 2-13 in
this chapter.

Before installing CIFER, make sure that you turn off any virus checking software you have running, and that you have
administrator privilege to install software on the target system.

2-4
Installation 2

1. Extract the downloaded zipped file to a temporary directory. Navigate to the extracted folder and double-click
the setup.exe program. The CIFER setup window will appear as below. Click Next to continue.

2-5
2 Installation

2. Enter your name and company. Click Next to continue

2-6
Installation 2

3. Select the directory in which you want to install CIFER in the Destination Location dialog box. Click
Next to continue.

Note:The name of the destination folder must not contain any spaces.

2-7
2 Installation

4. Select the edition of CIFER you want to install. Student only supports Standalone Edition; do not select
MATLAB Edition. Click Next to continue.

2-8
Installation 2

5. Select a program folder where CIFER program icons will be added. It is strongly recommended that you
keep the default CIFER_Student program folder. Click Next to continue.

2-9
2 Installation

6. Select the directory in which you want to install MATLAB Compiler Runtime (MCR) in the Destination
Location dialog box. Click Next to continue. If the required version of the MCR has already been
installed on the target system, this prompt is skipped and CIFER will be associated with the installed
version of the MCR automatically.

2-10
Installation 2

7. At this point, the CIFER installation program has enough information to begin installing and copying the
program files to the target directory. If the program is installed successfully, an Information dialog box
will be displayed to instruct you to register your version of CIFER Student. After clicking OK a
registration form will come up in your default web browser. Please fill out the form, and click the
Register button, which will then generate an email in your email client to be sent to us.

8. During installation, if the NuTCRACKER COE is detected on the target system, you will be prompted to
uninstall it. This component is no longer used by CIFER and if you installed it as part of a previous
CIFER installation, you must uninstall it from your system by selecting Yes.

2-11
2 Installation

9. The installation is now completed. You will have to reboot your computer before running CIFER. You
can choose to reboot immediately after the installation, or at some other time prior to running CIFER.
Make your selection and click Finish to complete the installation.

2-12
Installation 2

Uninstalling CIFER
Windows

Before uninstalling CIFER, you should first BACKUP any data in the CIFER (or CIFER_Student) folder. Specifically, you
may want to backup the contents of the Data and Jobs sub-folders. To be really safe, you could backup the entire CIFER
(or CIFER_Student) folder to make sure you capture everything (such as READMIS modules you developed, for example).
If you backup to a folder on the same system, it is probably best not to use CIFER in the name of the backup folder.

Please note that the CIFER uninstaller will ask to remove the NuTCRACKER COE. This component is no longer used by
CIFER. If the NuTCRACKER COE installed on your system was part of a previous CIFER install, you must uninstall it when
asked during uninstallation.

To ensure proper uninstallation of the packages components, the software should be removed in the order shown below:

1. CIFER

2. MATLAB Compiler Runtime

If you are uninstalling an older version of CIFER (e.g., prior to 5.0.00) then these are the components you must remove (in
the order shown):

1. XVision or SCO XVision Eclipse

2. NuTCRACKER Unix Utilities Plug-in, Deluxe

3. NuTCRACKER Operating Environment Plug-in

4. MKS Platform Components 7.x or 9.x

Note:To ensure that the list of software components displayed by the Add/Remove applet is updated, you may
close and reopen the Add/Remove applet after uninstalling each component.

To remove a CIFER installation:

1. On Windows XP systems, click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs. On
Windows Vista systems, click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel -> Programs -> Uninstall or change
a program. On Windows 7 click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel, then click Uninstall a program.

2. Select CIFER Student from the list of products installed on your computer and click on the Remove
button.

2-13
2 Installation

3. A confirmation dialog box will appear to confirm the deletion of CIFER. Click OK to continue.

4. When asked to uninstall NuTCRACKER COE choose Yes if you installed it as part of a previous CIFER
installation.

5. If uninstalling the Standalone Edition, you will be asked to uninstall the MATLAB Compiler Runtime. If
you choose No, that version of the MATLAB Compiler Runtime will need to be uninstalled by using
standard Windows uninstall mechanism.
6. At the end of the uninstallation, the Maintenance Complete dialog box will appear to confirm the
successful removal of the software. Click Finish to complete the uninstallation.
7. If you are uninstalling a version of CIFER prior to the 5.0.00 release, you will also have to manually remove two
user environment variables, CIFHOST and CIFLIC, which were the activation keys for the pre-5.0.00 releases.
These will no longer be used in future versions of CIFER. To remove these environment variables:

On Windows XP systems, click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel -> System.

On Windows Vista systems, click on the Start menu, and select Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System.

On Windows 7, click on the Start Menu, click on Search programs and files, type environment and click Edit the
system environment variables.

1. Select the Advanced tab from the System Properties window, and click on Environment Variables.

2. In the Environment Variables window, select the variable CIFHOST in the User Variables list box, and
click on Delete to remove it. Repeat the same step for CIFLIC.
3. Click on OK to accept the changes and close the Environment Variables window. Click OK to close the
System Properties window.

4. If uninstalling an older version of CIFER (version 4.3.00 or prior), repeat step 2 to uninstall XVision by selecting
SCO XVision Eclipse from the product list. If the uninstall is successful and you are asked to restart the computer,
click on the No button.

Notes: After uninstalling XVision, you should check to make sure it is really gone (see the previous note). If it is not
gone, it may need to be uninstalled using the installation CD (you may or may not see a window entitled
Installation Media Not Found; if you see it, just hit its Cancel button). To uninstall from the CD, insert the CD
that was used to install XVision. If a Setup dialog appears, hit the Cancel button (and then confirm that you
want to quit by hitting the Yes button). Then uninstall XVision (using the Add/Remove Programs control
panel). If you come to an XVision Setup window that has a Remove All button, click that button (and then click
Yes to confirm); on Windows XP systems please consult us if you encounter this situation before making a
choice. If you are asked whether to restart Windows, check the No button and click Next. After a few moments
you may remove the CD from the drive.

2-14
Installation 2

During some uninstallations, a dialog entitled Remove Shared File? may appear. If you see this dialog, click
the Yes To All button and then confirm by hitting the Yes button.

1. Repeat step 1 and then select MKS Platform Components to uninstall MKS NuTCRACKER from the product list.
If you are uninstalling an older version of CIFER (e.g., 3.60r3 dated May 2000), you should remove both
NuTCRACKER Unix Utilities Plug-in, Deluxe and NuTCRACKER Operating Environment Plug-in from the
product list instead.
2. If you installed the Standalone Edition, but choose not to uninstall the MATLAB Compiler Runtime
during uninstallation, you may repeat step 1 and then select MATLAB(R) Compiler Runtime v7.11 to
uninstall the MATLAB Compiler Runtime.
3. After uninstalling all of the CIFER and its depending components, you should now restart the computer.

Configuring CIFER for multiple users

Multiple-user CIFER systems are generally configured to address one or both of the following issues:

R The individual users of a CIFER Windows workstation are working with separate data sets and each requires his own
separate databases and associated SIFDEF files. For various reasons, shared directories are not acceptable options.
R The individual users are working with different time history data formats and each requires a separate customized
READMIS DLL to access his data.
As it turns out, the second of these situations is, in its implementation, slightly more complex than the first, requiring all of
the mechanism of that case plus a few additional adjustments. In any event, neither is difficult to effect by following the
procedures outlined here.

Windows

Before discussing the structure of the CIFER directory tree, it is necessary to distinguish between two types of CIFER
installations: single and multiple user.

A single user CIFER installation is one in which only one person of the (perhaps) many people with accounts on the system,
actually uses CIFER. On such a system, it is unnecessary to create separate user configurations and directory structures in
order to segregate the operational environments of multiple users. In this case, the CIFER user can create databases and
customized data input routines directly within the primary CIFER directory tree without fear of impacting others.

However, on systems which support multiple CIFER users, it is necessary to duplicate, on a per user basis, certain portions
of the primary CIFER directory structure in order to provide segregated areas for the storage of user data. In these
installations, the cifroot environment variable will point to the primary CIFER directory (as created during installation),
while the cifhome environment variable will point to the root of each individual users CIFER directory tree. Because

2-15
2 Installation

CIFER requires that the paths to its files not contain spaces, users cannot have their individual CIFER accounts in their
C:\Documents and Settings\username directories. We suggest making individual user accounts in the C:\CIFER_Student
directory, with names like CIFER_User1.

Each user must have his own copy

of these folders.

Figure 2.1 This is the primary CIFER directory tree, as created by the installer.
The path to the root of this tree is contained in the cifroot environment variable.

Users Requiring Separate Databases

To address the first of the above issues, the procedure for establishing individual user accounts is as follows:

1. Click My Computer (XP) or Computer (Vista, 7) found in the Start Menu to navigate to a location of your choice;
once there, create a new folder. This folder will become the root of your personal CIFER subtree. Needless to
say, you should be the owner of this folder and have full access control (read/write/etc.) over it. It is suggested
(but not required) that you label this folder CIFER.
2. Open the newly created folder, and create another folder within it. Label this folder scripts. Next, using
another My Computer window, navigate to the root of the primary CIFER installation on your system.

2-16
Installation 2

Open the scripts folder that you find there, and copy (dont move) the cifrc.cmd file in that folder to your
new scripts folder. Also, copy the entire %cifroot%\UI folder to the root of your personal CIFER subtree.
3. In the root of your personal CIFER subtree, create another new folder; label it data. Then, open the data
folder in the primary %cifroot% directory, and copy the file SIFDEF.default.default from that folder to
your new data folder. Now, open the newly created data folder, and make a duplicate copy of the
SIFDEF.default.default file that you just copied there; label it simply SIFDEF. If you intend to store your
databases in a db folder beneath your personal data folder, create a folder labeled db in that location.
Finally, if you intend to store your time history data in a th folder beneath your personal data folder,
create a folder labeled th in that location.
4. Create a jobs folder in the root of your personal CIFER subtree. Next, open the jobs folder that you just
created, and create a plots folder and a tfdata folder within the jobs folder. Optionally, copy the GTR
simulation files described on page 3-20 into the respective newly created jobs and tfdata folders.
5. Finally, you must override the system-wide definition of %cifhome% with a user-specific definition that points to
your personal CIFER subtree. While logged in as yourself, open the System control panel. Select the Advanced
tab in the System applet and then click on the Environment Variables button. In the resulting window, click on
the New button below the list of User variables; in the resulting (small) window, enter cifhome in the Variable
field and enter the appropriate path in the Value field. Click OK (repeatedly) to make the change effective. Do
not close this window without clicking these buttons, or your definition will be lost!

This completes the process of setting up an individual CIFER account for the purpose of establishing separate data
directories.

Users Requiring Specialized READMIS DLLs

If you require a specialized READMIS DLL, then you must complete the following additional steps:

1. Using My Computer, navigate to the root folder of your personal CIFER subtree. In this folder, create a folder
labeled source. Inside of that folder, create a folder labeled readmis. Next, in a separate My Computer window,
navigate to the readmis folder beneath the primary CIFER root directory on your system (i.e.,
%cifroot%\source\readmis). Copy one (or both, if you will need both languages) of the readmis_c and readmis_f90
folders that you find there into your own readmis folder.
2. Copy the %cifroot%\bin folder and its contents into the root of your personal CIFER subtree.

3. Next, using a simple text editor such as Notepad, edit the file %cifhome%\scripts\cifrc.cmd, and change the
definition of SIFLOC from %cifroot%\bin to %cifhome%\bin. This will cause CIFER to take its executables from
the bin directory beneath the root of your personal CIFER subtree. (The readmis project that you copied to your
subtree in step six will automatically place the new DLL in that directory.)

2-17
2 Installation

Of course, beyond these preparatory steps, it will be necessary for you to use a template READMIS project to generate your
specialized DLL. For information on that process, please see The READMIS DLL Projects (Windows) on page 5-5.
