The 33rd installment of
Greers most popular fes-
tival is expected to draw
more than 20,000 people
downtown.
The Pelham Medical
Center Family Festival will
take place this Friday and
Saturday, featuring live
entertainment, local ven-
dors, carnival rides and
more.
The event, hosted by the
Greater Greer Chamber
of Commerce, will invade
Trade and Poinsett Streets,
with events taking place
from the railroad tracks to
Greer City Park. Mark Ow-
ens, president and CEO of
the chamber, said Family
Fest is a strong tradition
that brings with it a heavy
economic impact.

After deadly

A Lyman resident has
been charged with murder
after running over a mo-
torcyclist with his vehicle,
according to police.
Nowell Harrison Riddle,
31, was arrested follow-
ing the April 30 incident.
He was also charged with
unlawful conduct towards
a child.

The main thing Ive
learned about this festival
is how big of a weekend
it is for our permanent
downtown merchants,
Owens said. This is a fes-
tival that puts their stores
on the map and gives
them a lot of traffic over
a short period of time. Its
a big boost for business.
Owens said addition of
several new downtown
businesses makes for a
more complete experience
for festival-goers.
Each year we do Fami-
ly Fest, we have new store
fronts, Owens said. We
have a great occupancy
rate in downtown right
now, and its exciting to
be able to show that off
to people who are visit-
ing, been here forever, or
just moved to the area.

Bus driver acts fast during 101 collision
Greer
students
evacuated

A school bus driver act-
ed quickly to evacuate 20
Greer students following
a head-on collision last
Wednesday on Highway
101. The bus was struck
by a pick-up truck, entrap-
ping the driver, according
to Lt. Jim Holcombe of the
Greer Police Department.
The driver of the pick-
up was extracted, and the
students on the bus were
escorted to safety.
No children were seri-
ously injured, Holcombe
said.
Greenville County
Schools officials said the
seven-year bus driver, Da-
vid Scott, evacuated the
20 Greer students in 41
seconds. Four children
suffered minor injuries.
Two middle school and
two high school students
were transported to the
hospital.
The collision caused
a fire, which was extin-
guished by two employees

formce at the Pelham Medical
Center Greer Family Festival
this weekend, rising county
star Chase Bryant said he is ex-
cited to be back in the Up-
state.
Im excited to come back to
the area, he said in an inter-
view with The Greer Citizen.
Ive played in Greenville and
some of the best fans are in
that region.
Bryants top 10 debut single,
Take It On Back reached
three million combined views
on YouTube and VEVO, spent
15 consecutive weeks on the

event, set for May 19, will
make the move from Dool-
ey Field to Greer City Park
this year.
The theme of the event,
which will take place from
6-11 p.m., is DeRail Can-
cer.
This years theme was
chosen because of Greers

wanted the theme to be
something the community
would connect with, said

they hope to be a very successful
line of blue jeans.
Not just distressed, but according
to the upscale department store, fake
mud-splattered jeans so that you can
appear to authentically resemble the
lower working class. Or, as the ad states,
showing the world youre not afraid to
get down and dirty.
For $425.00
I think I love (either that or Im still
numbly trying to grasp the marketing
concept) the fact that there will be
wealthy people eager to part with their
cash to don a piece of apparel that gives
them the immediate satisfaction of de-
scending into a different socio economic
class. I mean, we all enjoy casual Friday
attire or the idea of house pants and
sweats, but to go the extra distance of
adding ground in fake mud as if youve
just walked off a building site (you may
want to send the kids out of the room
for this next sentence) is so damned
stupid that I cant stop laughing. And

er-making just as serious.

want on Friday.
Its too much pressure!

hamburger is the best.
That is for you to decide.

hometown restaurants are full
of interesting people and good
food. (If youre more of a hot

Youve probably been to
Fuddruckers and Five Guys, but
youd also be hard-pressed to
find a better burger.
Lastly, check out some places
on Trade Street like Blue Ridge
Brewing. These folks know
their way around a kitchen.

a small garden space next
to our front door.
Gardening has shaped my life
since I was a child with prepar-

Caliber Ridge North will be

Caliber Ridge North will
take on a new designation,
Greer Council decided last
week.
Greer Council, in con-
junction with Spartanburg
County Council, unani-
mously approved a reso-
lution to designate Caliber
Ridge North as a joint in-
dustrial and business park
of Spartanburg and Chero-
kee counties.
There are a number
of benefits to that desig-
nation, said Reno Dea-
ton, Executive Director at
Greer Development Cor-
poration. That designa-
tion increases the value of
the job development tax
credit, which then is an
incentive for companies
to locate in that property
and create qualifying jobs
on that property.

The Proactive Parenting
Initiative (PPI) is hoping to
help local families with a
new parenting class.
The class for parents of
defiant or rebellious teens
is being offered for free
from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on
Monday evenings at Air-
port Baptist Church.
This is a 10-week class,
and parents can join at
anytime because we will
start a new class each
quarter, said Jamie Mur-
phy, President and Found-
er of the Proactive Parent-
ing Initiative. They can
make up what they missed
during the next class.
The curriculum is cre-
ated by the Parent Proj-
ect, said Murphy, who has
been a licensed Parent
Project facilitator since
2003. The Parent Project
program has been around
for 31 years, and more
than 600,000 parents have
attended their training.
No other parenting pro-
gram in the country gets
more court-mandated re-
ferrals due to intervention
for at-risk juvenile behav-
iors, Murphy said.

Heath, passed away April
27, 2017.
A funeral service was
held 2 p.m. Monday, May
1, 2017, at Memorial Meth-
odist Church in Greer, con-
ducted by Rev. Joe Cate.
The family greeted
friends from 12 p.m. to
1:45 p.m. in the sanctuary
prior to the service.
Anne was born April 28,
1921, in Macon, Georgia,
and grew up in Columbia.
A graduate of the Universi-
ty of South Carolina, Anne
was a seventh grade teach-
er and substitute teacher.
She served as Vice Pres-
ident of Wesley Founda-
tion. She was a charter
member of the Camellia
Garden Club, served Meals
on Wheels, served on the
boards of the Greer Liter-
acy Board, Epworth Chil-
drens Home and led the
Thursday Prayer Group for
years. Additionally, Anne
taught Sunday school for
young adults and ladies
for over 50 years.
Throughout her life she
inspired, served and cared
for others, especially her
husband, Clyde Benjamin
Dobson, who died in 2010
and her extended family.
The family wishes to ex-

following a collision while
on duty, leaving behind a
wife and three children.
Once we found out about
the large amount of blood
used during his hospi-
tal stay, we wanted to do
something to help the

When she awoke, Turner

When she attempted to
call for help, the victim

her cell phones and then
dragged her down some
cement steps by her hair.
She also claims that Turn-

and back before leaving
the residence. Soon there-
after, the victims father
arrived and began help-

leave. When Turner saw
this, he again went after
the victim, grabbing her by
the neck and choking her.
The victim had to bite her
attacker to escape.

Greer takes second at track championships
Greer Highs Ebony Bals-
ley and Quavian White led
the Yellow Jackets to sec-
ond-place finishes in the
girls and boys Region
II-AAAA track and field
championships at Eastside
High School last Wednes-
day.
Balsley, who won the
Long Jump, Triple Jump,
400 Hurdles and ran a leg
on the first-pace 1600-Re-
lay Team, was named the
MVP of the girls meet.
White, who won the 110
Hurdles, 400 Hurdles, and
ran legs on the first-place
400-Relay and 1600-Relay
Teams was Runner-Up in
named MVP of the boys
meet.
In the girls meet, the
Yellow Jackets finished
in second place with 92
points. Several athletes
placed in the top five in
their respective events,
including: Kaiya Bradford
(High Jump, Shot Put, 100
and 100 Hurdles), Ciara
Garett (200 and 400), Ry-
lan Hardin (400), Taylor
Houston (1600 and 3200),
Kassidy Talley (100 Hur-
dles), Nyia Williams (Long
Jump & Triple Jump),
Tyanna Dingle (Discus)
and the 3200-Relay Team.

The Byrnes softball team
will play for a district
championship Wednes-
day, after topping Nation
Ford (7-1) and Laurens (2-
1) in the first two rounds
of playoff action.
Strong defensive play
from Hayden Bradley and
Kasey Widmyer led the
Lady Rebels to an easy
round one win over Nation
Ford. Widmyer struck out
three from the mound, al-
lowing just five hits during
the blowout.
I have no doubt that I
have the best staff, head
coach Brandi Aiken said
of her pitchers. We are
strongest with Kasey on
the mound, Tatum (Ar-
boleda) behind the plate,
and Haylee (Whitesides)
at third, but we defiantly
have options..
Byrnes topped Laurens
2-1 in round two. The
Rebels had eight hits in
the game, but left several
runners on base, allowing
Laurens to stay in it.
Amber Campbell got
on base every time at the
plate for Byrnes, scoring
both runs for the Rebels.
Haven Pesce and Widmy-
er were both 2 for 4 on the
day.
Defensively we had a
few miscues in the out-
field that are very unlike
us and that gave them
their one run, Aiken said.
Hayden Bradley had a
strong day on defense and
saved a few base hits from
falling out there.

par. Moody shot a 1-under
par 71 to win the individ-
ual title. Moody finished

our season to continue so
that is all we are focused
on at this point.

T
hey go to work early.
They stay late. They
look after your chil-
dren and spend countless
hours finding ways to
better educate them. They
sacrifice time with their
own families, so they can
spend time with yours.
We owe a lot to our
teachers, and we should
show them how much
we appreciate them this
week.
Most people can tell
you, no matter how much
time has passed, which
teacher made a differ-
ence in their life. For me,
that was Mr. Shepherd,
my sixth grade reading
teacher.
There was nothing spe-
cial about Mr. Shepherd.
He was an average guy
with an average salary. He
had about six classes each
day, each one containing
more than 20 kids. I was
one of those 20 kids, but
it didnt feel like I was in
a crowded room when I
took my seat.
I had a lot of attention
issues as a kid. I couldnt
concentrate on anything,
which meant I wasnt
paying attention to a lot
of what my teachers were
saying. That always led to
trouble.
I wasnt doing well in
school when I met Mr.
Shepherd. I had behavior
issues, I couldnt keep my
grades up and I wasnt
caring about anything I
was doing.
But something changed
that year. Mr. Shepherd
spent a lot of time with
me.
He was patient with
my attention issues. He
explained things to me
when I couldnt under-
stand. He stayed for
hours after school each
week, so I could get extra
help.
In his mind, he was just
doing his job.
Thats what separates
teachers from folks in a
lot of other occupations.
Teachers, for the most
part, do what they do be-
cause they want to make a
difference.
They invest in students,
but in doing so, they
make a personal connec-
tion.
My wife is a teacher in
Spartanburg School Dis-
trict Five.
She has spent five years
of her life pouring into
those fifth grade stu-
dents. She knows about
their academic struggles,
as well as their struggles
at home.
She spends hours
developing personalized
instruction for these
students and if the stu-
dents arent making good
grades, she looks at what
she could be doing wrong.
One student she taught
a couple of years ago was
particularly hard to reach.
She had trouble getting
the student to behave in
class and do assignments,
and it was causing other
students to misbehave as
well. It was a rough patch
for my wife.
She kept trying her
hardest every day, but
the more she tried, the
more she felt like she was
failing.
Last year, she attended
a concert at the mid-
dle school and saw her
problem student. But her
problem student wasnt a
problem anymore.
This student was
now doing well in class,
singing in the chorus and
contributing to clubs in
the school.
This turnaround wasnt
simply because of my
wifes efforts.
It was because we have
a lot of great teachers
working to make our
kids better students and
people.
If you get a chance this
week, take the time to
offer a personal thanks
to the teacher in your life.
They dont hear it very
often, but they need to.

The North Greenville baseball team landed eight players on the All-Conference Carolinas team recently.
NGU baseball team honored
North Greenville base-
ball finished second in
the league this season, as
eight players were named
to the All-Conference
team in the process.
The Crusaders earned
three first team nods in
Bennette Hill, Clark Scol-
amiero, and Tucker Bur-
gess while Nate Maggio,
Josh Black, Connor Grant,
Blake Hamilton, and Can-
nan Cropper earned sec-
ond team nods.
Bennette Hill was a solid
presence at second base
for the Crusaders. Hill was
third in batting average
on the team, swinging at a
.338 clip with 45-hits. He
accounted for six doubles,
a pair of triples and three
homers in those hits. He
also scored 26-runs and
scratched 31-RBI.
The Crusaders also got a
lift in the lineup from cen-
ter fielder Clark Scolamie-
ro. Scolamiero hit .351 this
season, racking up 71-hits
including 14-doubles and a
triple. He also hit for pow-
er, blasting seven homers.

weekend work. He was
second in the league in

of the best outfields in
the conference this sea-
son, led by Scolamiero and
second team All-Confer-
ence performer Connor
Grant. Grant hit .337 on
the season with 65-hits,
13 of which were doubles
with five triples and seven
homers. He reached base
safely 80 times this sea-
ment, menu by Larkins on
the River and beverages.
Other tournament week
events include the inau-
gural Executive Womens
Day on Wednesday, May
17 from 9:30 to 3 p.m. at
Furman Universitys Trone
Student Center. The event
will include a panel dis-
cussion for women, by
women. Keynote speaker
for the event will be Molly
Barker, founder of Girls on
the Run. Tickets for that
event are also available
through Linda Johnson.

Cropper finished the sea-
son with seven wins and
held opponents to a .236
batting average. He ac-
counted for 80-strikeouts,
making him seventh in
Conference Carolinas in
that category.

he last college base-
ball dynasty was
LSU, which won four
national titles between
1993-2000.
Since that time, the
team that came closest
to building a dynasty
was Ray Tanners USC
Gamecocks, who played in
three straight champion-
ships (winning 2) before
Tanner left his post to
become USCs Athletic
Director.
No matter who was
named Tanners succes-
sor was going to have
impossible shoes to fill.
Chad Holbrook has
come up short...and
now finds himself
very much on the
proverbial hot seat.
Be that as it may, current
Gamecock coach Chad
Holbrook has come up
short during his five
year reign and now finds
himself very much on the
proverbial hot seat.
Holbrook, who served
as an assistant coach
under Tanner from
2009-2012, hasnt been
terrible. In fact, hes had
three very good seasons
at the helm, going 46-18
last year and winning the
SEC East. But now the
USC skipper finds his
team suffering its second
bad season in the last
three years. In 2015, the
Gamecocks went 32-25
and failed to qualify for
the NCAA tournament.
This year isnt much
better. USC currently sits
at 25-17 and 10-11 in the
conference, having lost
their last five SEC series.
I believe that if Hol-
brook does not put a
streak together soon and
at least make a Super Re-
gional this season, he will
have to pack his bags and
fly the old coop. These
are the three biggest rea-
sons why,
1. Holbrook is a dismal
0-7 in the SEC Tourna-
ment, despite usually
going to Hoover with a
decent seed and confer-

2. Holbrook has failed
to beat Clemson consis-
tently, having lost six
of his last nine to his
in-state rival. Ordinarily,
that wouldnt be anything
to be ashamed of, but
Holbrook has faced some
bad Clemson teams. In
fact, Clemson got so bad
that they were forced to
fire long-time head coach
Jack Leggett two years
ago. Tanner, meanwhile,
always seemed to get the
better of the Tigers, even
going 4-0 against them in
the College World Series.
3. Speaking of the
College World Series,
Holbrook has never been
there as a head coach. Six
different SEC squads have
made it to Omaha during
that time, but USC isnt
one of them. In fact, the
Gamecocks have made
just two Super Regionals
during Holbrooks tenure,
going 1-4 in those games.
After the Cocks lost
9-4 at home to Kentucky
Sunday, Holbrook showed
little emotion, telling the
media, I have no doubt
well play some really
good baseball in these
last 13 games. Well, if
Holbrook is going to be in
a USC uniform next year,
he better be right.
Patience is wearing
thin in Columbia. Coastal
Carolina won the College
World Series last year,
Clemson has a new coach
that has them ranked in
the top ten, and USC is
currently sitting on the
tenth best record in the
SEC. After being ranked
5th in Baseball Ameri-
cas preseason poll, this
year has been an epic
disappointment for Chad
Holbrook. And, unless a
miracle happens, another
skipper will be coming to
town soon.

winner of the City of
Greers Giant Dude con-
test.
OShields submitted
the winning photo of her
six-year-old daughter,
Brayleigh Hendricks, a stu-
dent at Skyland Elementa-
ry School.
I really wanted to have
a free one, maybe if I won,
Hendricks said. I really
like the way they look.
Early Tuesday morning,
Hendricks met the artist
Scott Gerber of Florida
and showed him the fe-
male scientist Tube Dude
she wanted as her prize.
The reason why I want-
ed a scientist is because
I can put it in my science
lab once I get grown up,
Hendricks said.
When Hendricks got the
news she won, I was so

First Presbyterian partners with Habitat for Humanity

Church of Greer decid-
ed to meet some specific
needs in the community.
The church agreed to
contact Habitat for Hu-
manity to see what they
could do to build a home
in Greer. This summer,
First Presbyterian will fi-
nally have the opportu-
nity to meet that need by
participating in the Greer
Community Partners Hab-
itat Build, an extension of
Habitat for Humanity of
Greenville.

A 2008 graduate of

The groom is the son
of Tim and Marie Studley,
of Greer, and grandson of
Shirley Studley, the late E.
L. Studley, Margaret Price
and the late Edgar C. Lind-
ley.
A 2006 graduate of Greer
High School, and 2012
graduate of North Green-
ville University with a BA
degree in Music Education,
he is the band director at
Berea High School.

Off-white chiffon and
string pearls created a ro-
mantic arch under which
the couple exchanged

Guthrie, also the vocalist

A vocal selection, Take

bride and groom tied a
three rope knot onto a
wood board, symbolizing
the scripture from Ecclesi-
astes 4:12, that a cord of
three strands is not easily
broken.
For her marriage, the
bride selected an off-white
ballgown of silk taffeta
with a chapel train de-
signed by Leann Belter.
Delicate crystal and pearls
beaded straps enhanced
the ballerina neckline
with an illusion lace and
pearled insert. A dramatic
look was created by a low
back atop a gathered and
rusched cummerbund and
cinched waistline.
The draped bodice
bloomed into a gathered
full skirt with pockets, one
which held an initialed
handkerchief in memory
of her grandfather, Harold
Bowers.
To complete the ensem-
ble, she wore a hair piece
of succulents, seeded eu-
calyptus sprigs and Vivi-
anna roses, accenting her
partial up-do with ringlet
curls.

About three years ago,
I was walking from the
parking lot to church (not
a long distance) and was
overcome with a feeling
of warmth and weakness
throughout my body. I al-
most dropped my purse,
but it stopped almost im-
mediately. About three
weeks ago, the same thing
happened. I did not feel
ill, and it passed almost as
fast as it came on. I am 65
years old, exercise regular-
ly and eat a healthy diet. I
have yearly checkups and
blood tests.
After looking over my
yearly bloodwork, which
we do at work, my white
blood cell count is usu-
ally low, according to my
hematologist. He had me
do a total body X-ray and
several blood tests over a
three-month period and
found nothing wrong with
me. I did not mention the
above to him. Can you tell
me what can possibly be
going on in my body? --

ANSWER: Since it has
happened only twice in
three years, and since you
have had an evaluation
without finding anything,
it may just be one of those
things that happens that
we dont get an answer to.
In fact, I think that is the
most likely outcome.
However, whenever I
hear about warmth all over
the body, I worry about

release of substances that
act on the blood vessels.

The Space Between
Us (PG-13) -- Gardner
(Asa Butterfield) is the
first human born on Mars,
to a surprised astronaut
mother who died during
childbirth. As the only
teen on Mars, Gardner has
a hankering for Earth so he
can meet with Tulsa (Britt
Robertson), the girl hes
been chatting with online.
Besides the long-distance
romance, hes also look-
ing for his unidentified fa-
ther and dealing with the
threat that Earths grav-
ity could be fatal for his
Mars-conditioned organs
before hes done coming-
of-age.
The movie plays it fast
and loose with the sci-
ence, and takes a lazier ap-
proach to issues of drama
-- some lines about love
and courage might as well
be delivered by Precious
Moments figurines. But-
terfield is a bright spot,
as he nails the look and
movements of that gan-
gly awkward kid who just
cannot be from this planet
(and thats not a dig at the
lanky young actor).
Between Us (R) -- No
space or young-adult
tropes in this one. Just
sad, young urban creative
types experiencing tur-
bulence in the journey of
their traditionally non-tra-
ditional relationship. Hen-
ry and Dianne (Ben Feld-
man and Olivia Thirlby)
are in the market for a new
apartment: Henry wants
to stay in downtown LA
and keep his hipster cred,
along with all the hopes
and possibilities of his
youth. Dianne is underde-
veloped but ready to move
on. In one night, they both
stray from the course as
they weigh whether to go
on and why they should.
It draws comparisons to
a lot of other indie rela-
tionship dramas without
doing much to rise above
or strike its own note.

artist Pam DeWitt during
the month of May. Visitors

to meet the artist on Fri-

DeWitt has crafted an
exclusive art form not
practiced anywhere else,
catching the attention of
art collectors worldwide.
Using recycled glass, she
starts by shattering the
glass then painstakingly
ken surface for her paint-
ings. She delicately layers
watercolors and gold and
silver leafing, all while
working in reverse as she
glass. The result is a rare
luminosity in the finished
painting.
