Session – Introduction to the course – lecture

Aim:-
To provide an overview of the structure of the course and its significance to future
professional practice.
Learning outcomes:-
Students will have a clear idea of the relevance of academic skills to success both
academically and practically.

Session – Sources of knowledge – lecture


week 51 12th September 11 -1pm

Aim:-
To highlight the different types of knowledge needed to inform practice.
Learning Outcomes:-
Students will have an appreciation of quantitative and qualitative approaches.

Session – Information Gathering - WebCT


Undertake this during weeks 51 - 1

Aim:-
To equip students with the skills necessary to search for information to support
academic essay writing.
Learning Outcomes:-
Students will have managed to locate relevant websites and understood how to use
key words in searching.

Session - Reading and comprehension – WebCT


Undertake this during weeks 51 - 1
You need to discuss this activity with your elearning tutor and peer group.
This discussion will close on Friday 28th September

Aim – To assist students in learning the skills needed to effectively summarise


literature.

Learning Outcomes:-
Students will have had the opportunity to summarise their chosen article and receive
feedback from e learning tutor.

Session – Presentation skills – WebCT


Undertake this during weeks 2 -3
You need to discuss this activity with your elearning tutor and peer group.
This discussion will close on Friday 12th October

Aim: –
To help students to understand the key features of articles which need to be presented
within academic essays.

Learning Outcomes:-
Students will have had the opportunity to construct two annotated bibliographies
related to their chosen article.

Session – Writing for Different purposes – lecture
Week 4 17th October 3 - 5

Aim:- To help students understand the different forms of writing that are needed in
practice.

Learning Outcomes:-
Students will have an appreciation of academic writing, report writing and writing in
case notes.

Open session – elearning support - OPTIONAL Web CT


Week 5 Friday October 26th 9 -11 Broadbent lab, Bronte building, Southwood
site
Aim:- to provide support for students in using WebCT materials

Learning outcomes:-
Student will have the opportunity to receive further guidance from course teachers in
using the Web CT materials

Session –Reflection and professional practice – Web CT


Undertake this during practice and week 12
You need to discuss this activity with your elearning tutor and peer group.
This discussion will open on close on Friday December 14th

Aim: –
To help students to understand reflective practice and reflective writing

Learning Outcomes:-
Students will have had the opportunity to practice reflective writing and gain feedback
from elearning tutor

Session – Harvard referencing – lecture


Week 12 Wednesday 12th December 1 - 3

Aim: –
To assist students in understanding the key aspects of the Harvard referencing system
and how to use it effectively.
Learning Outcomes:-
Students will have had the opportunity to examine typical referencing errors and
understand that importance of correct referencing.

Session – Reflection – face to face seminar


Week 12 Thursday 13th December 9-11
Rooms to be arranged

Aim: – To help students to use experiences in practice and link these to academic
essay writing and portfolio development.

Learning Outcomes:-
Students will have the opportunity to consider how to write reflectively and how this
benefits practice.
