The Delta works in the Dutch-Flemish Delta of the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt are among the
most iconic monuments of our country, in part because of the strong, defining image of the dams
and dikes. Striking, in particular, is the Eastern Scheldt Barrier, a wonder of the world, born from
the desire to make the Delta safe after the North Sea flood of 1953. After the realization of the
Delta Works, a large number of new projects for water safety were realized about which very little
is known. Most of these new generation projects, realized between 1985 and the present, are not
just merely about water safety.
The overview presents a dozen programs with more than one hundred and fifty projects strewn
across the area between land and water along the Dutch-Flemish Delta. What is this New Delta
that is emerging from the massive and ongoing development, and how is this vast undertaking
steered? Seventeen projects have been selected from this wide range of operations and are
explored more in depth. A number of essays by a group of experts discuss the urgency of the
research, and present a closer examination of the spatial, scenic, ecological, economic and civil
technical changes that typify these particular projects.
In short, this book traces the surprising contours of the New Delta and is a must-read, not only for
professionals and students, but certainly also for the general public.
With additional text contributions by Han Meyer, Joost Schrijnen, Bas Jonkman, Gigi van Rhee,
Jandirk Hoekstra, Jitske van Popering Verkerk, Patrick Meire.

ARCHITECTURE
The terrorist attacks at the start of the 21st century catapulted the issue of space and conflict into
the forefront of architectural debates. As a result, existing and newly emerging national, religious
and ethnic conflicts in relation to urban space became the focus of attention in architecture.
Though military thinking had already had a long-standing tradition in architectural history, the
sudden emergence of new spaces of conflict considerably altered architectural discourse.
Extreme conditions of war, militarisation, climate change as well as economic crisis are
threatening to structurally reconfigure our living environments. Over a decade later, however, the
aftermath of these urban intrusions seems to have produced a diversified field of both thinking
and action in architecture, as the theorising of spatial conflicts has started to incorporate a wide
variety of reflections from other disciplines while architectural practices have shown a remarkable
adequacy in addressing spaces of conflict, crisis and disaster.
The forthcoming 19th issue of Footprint will focus on these more recent roles of architecture in
the contemporary spaces of conflict. In this issue, departing from a spatial understanding of
geopolitical, climatological and economical conflicts, we seek to introduce and add to the
professional discourse new conditions, spaces and experimental practices. Focusing on 'conflict',
we are interested in contributions that highlight the large scale and phenomenal transitions in the
physical world and in society by extrapolating, through examples, the abundance of relations that
can be traced between conflict, territory and architecture.

The latest instalment of the Contemporary Architects Concept Series features Jo Nagasaka of
Schemata Architects, a Tokyo-based office active since 1998. The book was designed by So
Hashizume, who also designed the Schemata Architects website. As such, it is an extension and
continued expression of the offices identity, a concept that encourages referring to the website
while reading the book. Seven contributors write about Nagasaka and his practice including
long-time book lover Hiroshi Eguchi, who helped produce this edition while Nagasaka in turn
responds with his thoughts on architecture and design, plus his own work and activities beyond
building.

Spanish artist Nicols Combarro circled the globe to collect this series of unlikely structures.
Travelling through China, Mexico, Colombia, Morocco, Turkey, France, and Spain in search of
unfinished vernacular objects and contemporary ruins, his interest manifests as an analysis of the
different forms and expressions of constructed space, the variables of structure and material, and
how changing climates and contexts are reflected in the development of patterns and types. His
fascinating investigation, therefore, seeks references that enable an understanding of the nature
of construction, its transformative or functional qualities, and the varying approaches of its many
manifestations.

This instalment of Villages and Towns explores island settlements in the Mediterranean Sea and
along the North African coast. Photographed by Yukio Futagawa, these ancient places dating
back to the seafaring times of the Phoenicians and Romans come to life as living history. Essays
by Makoto Suzuki offer observations of places in the Balearic Islands and the Tyrrhenian Sea,
extrapolating their typical urban features and architectures, as well as how culture and climate
have influenced appearances across the region. Discover Bonifacio, perched on a cliff
overhanging the sea, or Procida, an hours boat trip from Naples, or even Takrouna and
Medenine in Tunisia.

ARCHITECTURE
Born from his fascination with ancient architecture and a personal rediscovery of its beauty
through materials such as wood, stone, earth and thatch, the aspiring architecture student Yukio
Futagawa set out in the mid-1950s to photograph minka, the traditional rural houses of Japan.
This experience would be instrumental in shifting his lifes work toward photographing rather than
creating architecture. This large-format compendium of Futagawas images of villages and homes
captures not only the sequence of history but also the essence of Japanese culture at a time
when much of the country remained agrarian, not yet subjected to more recent, rapid
modernisation.

ARCHITECTURE
The Tokyo-based office of TNA is the focus of this issue, which features more than twenty
buildings completed since 2004. The practice of Makoto Takei and Chie Nabeshima is primarily
known for superior residential designs built in both natural and urban contexts, though other
projects, such as the Kamoi Museum and Joshu-Tomioka Station, also appear in this overview of
more than two decades of work. Among their awarded projects are the Ring House, Figured
Glass House, Gate Villa, and Helix House. The duos belief in so-called condensed architecture,
which neither blends into its surroundings nor confronts them, has enriched the in-between-ness
of their architecture.
