Lesson Plan

This lesson is used to introduce data communication and its effect on us today.

Objectives: The objectives of this lesson are to:

• Discuss network component

• Introduce LAN, WAN, AND MAN
• Explain terminology associated with data communication

At the end of this lesson students should be able to:

• Define a number of terms related to data communication

• List the basic components of a network.
• Explain the difference between a LAN, WAN and MAN

Key Graphics: Power Point Presentation.

Instruction: Please complete the following activities and submit your response
online.

Lab Activity: Please identify the communication technology that is associated

with the different types of networks, such as LAN, WAN and
MAN.

What is a protocol and what purpose does it serve? Is it necessary for

communicating devices to follow the same protocol?

Vocabulary

Communication This is the science (as it relates to the computer

environment) and practice of transmitting information,
such as documents, graphics, images, or files by electronic
or mechanical means.

Data This is unorganized facts that are process into to meaningful information.

Bit This is a shortening of the words “Binary digit.” It has only two possible values: 0
and 1.

Bytes A string of eight bits is called a byte.

Protocol Protocols are set of rules that governs how data is sent from
one point to another.

Topology This is the geometric arrangement of devices on the

network.

Network A network consists of two or more computers that are

connected together to share information.

Local Area Network (LAN) A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and
that share a common communications line or wireless link
and typically share the resources of a single processor or
server within a small geographic area (for example, within
an office building).

Wide Area Network (WAN) This usually refers to a network which covers a large
geographical area, and use communications circuits to
connect the intermediate nodes.
Metropolitan Area Network A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a network that
interconnects users with computer resources in a
geographic area or region larger than that covered by even
a large local area network (LAN) but smaller than the area
covered by a wide area network (WAN).
